Real signature moves:Hakeem Olajuwon Dream Shake
- Hey everyone....I'm gonna go over some of the most popular "signature moves" in basketball history
In Basketball it's not always the "flashy" moves that make a player great...it's the small details...the little things that seperate great players from thier peers.
First up....
The Dream Shake
The #1 Factor in Dreams ability to do the dream shake was , his IQ of knowing /wanting to always decieve his opponent. ( He stated that playing soccer/futbol showed him the importance of tricking his defender even as far as changing his whole direction (go backwards) coupled with foot movement and head movement to try and get past)...the knowledge of trickery/deception/ and ability.
#2. His excellent Foot coordination....I think growing up playing soccer gave him a advantage with his foot speed/balance
he was a threat to quikly spin past .....

Forcing you to play off of him slightly......but not to much or he could easily rise up and get his shot...

#3. You had to play him honest or he could shoot a 15' jumper consistently.
so with all that in his pocket....he knew how to decieve his opponent with Head' shoulder fakes...and use his pivot to spin.
example:Oliver Miller plays him close.....Hakeem spins.....Oliver is still on him....Hakeem uses a head and shoulder fake to act like he is going to reverese pivot (rise up and shoot)...but he doesn't...he continues inoriginal direction for a layup. 2 moves

Cliff Robinson (aftr bieng spun on many times...to go along with bieng risen on many times) Plays him Tight....hakeem fakes reverse pivot(great head and shoulder fake) turns into a fallaway J

and Finally...the true version of a Dream Shake....
Hakeem catches it in the post ( has not established a Pivot) Spins to his left...jab steps (remember he can drive past you)...takes one dribble going right (cross step)...uses another fake with a head and shoulder (head moves with the shoulder to create an illusion of another reverse pivot)
comes back over his left shoulder for a easy/open 10' jumper

all created by Tricking his opponent rather then using brute speed/force

Yup... according to me the greatest post player ever.
Re: Real signature moves:Hakeem Olajuwon Dream Shake
Repped  That was a great read. Nice choice of gifs too - DRob completely lost on Hakeem's quick right spin
What other signature moves are up next?
Re: Real signature moves:Hakeem Olajuwon Dream Shake
the trick is every time you do a fake to make a two point stop so that the defender can't decide which is your pivot foot
from their its just reacting to how your defender plays you, its so simple its brilliant
Re: Real signature moves:Hakeem Olajuwon Dream Shake
That little jump stop he does makes it so much more difficult to defend his shake. Defenders get shook because they think he established a pivot when in fact he could actually go either way.
His footwork was amazing, was extremely quick and agile, had a nice touch on his jumpers and if need be could throw some power behind his dunks.
Easily my favorite center of all-time.

Re: Real signature moves:Hakeem Olajuwon Dream Shake
I don't think there was a variation of the move.
I was always under the impression it was the move when he'd post up on the block, do a half spin, shoulder fake towards the middle and turn to the baseline for a fadeaway jumper. The description in this article, especially the visual, is perfect.

Examples in the gifs below, sorry for the terrible quality.

Re: Real signature moves:Hakeem Olajuwon Dream Shake
bmd, they're showing up fine to me.
Can anyone else confirm this?
I will upload from another site in that case.
Re: Real signature moves:Hakeem Olajuwon Dream Shake
The dream team thing shows, but the three images underneath don't (google chrome).
That last move on the op is so dirty. I can't imagine a defender playing that perfectly unless it comes from sheer luck of guessing.
