Swinging the ball wasn't effective in previous eras

Being allowed to camp in the lane meant swinging the ball was less effective in previous eras.. Defenders barely had to move when the ball was swung - they could remain stationary and just turn their head and body like a swivel chair.

But in today's game with defensive 3 seconds, players must stay out of the lane... So when the ball is swung, defenders must move from outside the lane on one side of the paint, to outside the lane on the other side of the paint - this is much easier for the offense to face than defenders getting to camp in the lane and merely swivel-chair when the ball is swung.

That's why it sometimes looks like defenders are just standing there in previous eras, rather than moving their feet.

Defenders also didn't have to move as much because the 3-point line wasn't used, so offensive players were closer to the basket on average and had less room to go anywhere for the defenders to [I]need[/I] to move... indeed, the defense had all the advantages back in previous eras.

But in today's game with defensive 3 seconds, players must stay out of the lane, so when the ball is swung, [B]defenders actually have to move from one side of the paint all the way to the other [/B]- advantage offense... this is in addition to defenders having to cover more ground by guarding the 3-point line, which forces them to need to move more when guarding their man.

Except for the whole part about getting a post defender that is fronting the post to your guys back or a guy on his back sealed off for a lob over the top.

Part of what you wrote made sense but the thesis of your post is wrong. Swinging the ball has always been an important and effective part of offensive basketball.
