1988 MJ was on an entirely different level
In 1988, Michael Jordan was named the MVP and DPOY, selected to the first teams for all-NBA and all-defense, led the league in points and steals, named the all-star game MVP, and won the slam dunk contest
MJ averaged 35.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 3.2 steals, and 1.6 blocks on 53.5% shooting that season. His '92 season was extremely decorated as well, as he won MVP, FMVP, and an Olympic Gold medal.
Imagine averaging 35ppg and being the best defensive player in the league
:biggums:
Re: 1988 MJ was on an entirely different level
In 1987 jordon averaged 37 ppg in his 4th season at the age of 24, yet still finished below a team whose best player by far was a rookie Chuck Person.
I wonder what changed in 1988...

Re: 1988 MJ was on an entirely different level
Did that player win league mvp, finals mvp, DPOY? Lebron missed playoffs with guy who won league mvp, DPOY 3x. This changed as well.

Lebron played with Shaq who won league mvp and 3 finals mvp's and lost in round 2. Lebron played with Peak Duncan who had won 2 league mvp's and 3 finals mvp's and won bronze medal. Lebron played with Peak Wade who won finals mvp and got outplayed by Jason Terry. Lebron played with Derrick Rose who won mvp under age 30 which was the same as Kevin Durant who won mvp under 30 while both were on Golden State and Cleveland. Lebron played with mulitple PER leaders as well and now Russell Westbrook a league mvp winner and more triple doubles than Oscar Robertson. Yet despite all of that Lebron lost with all of them.

http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?500416-Why-did-Pelinka-surround-Lebron-with-a-bullshit-roster
He has peak Anthony Davis, the best player on the 2020 squad and the reason the Lakers did anything as the 2019 Lakers missed the playoffs and 2021 Lakers lost in round 1 when AD wasn't around. He has Prime Melo who won a scoring title and all time leader in scoring for the Olympics. He has Dwight Howard a 3x DPOY and a guy who beat Lebron without HCA. He has Westbrook who is the modern day Oscar Robertson and also won league mvp along with average a Triple Double 4 years in a row. He also has Rondo who is a hall of famer.
Why didn't he play it against Dwight Howard in 2009 when Dwight was dominating http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?459570-How-is-it-even-possible-to-lose-to-Dwight-Howard-in-a-series-with-HCA/page10? Or against Duncan or KG or Dirk? Both 0-2 with HCA against 50+ win teams until they joined forces with someone who won as the man. Also won bronze medals.
Tmac lost to Utah in 2007 while Lebron was losing to a career loser in Dwight Howard and also Carlos Arroyo in the Olympics with peak Tim Duncan on his squad despite playing more minutes than Hakeem even played on the 1996 Olympic team.

It was an era of high pace and Jordan chased points so all of his point totals are artificially inflated.
Re: 1988 MJ was on an entirely different level
Getting points in the 80s was not a problem. We're talking about an era where Adrian Dantley had 4 straight 30+ ppg seasons. On higher efficiency than jordon, too.
Winning in the 80s was a problem, that was reserved for true elites. Winning in the 90s became much less of a problem, however, after those elites succumbed to aging, injuries and AIDS.

Yesterday NBA TV was showing the game where Magic hit the running baby hook over McHale and Parish to essentially win game 4 I think it was of the '87 Finals. Great game.
Re: 1988 MJ was on an entirely different level
Jordan is the 2nd GOAT.
His career was very impressive.
Re: 1988 MJ was on an entirely different level
35 and DPOY is levels above Hakeem's 27 and DPOY
Like I said previously - MJ's prime was 85-91' - he was otherworldly, especially from 85-88' where his athleticism peaked (22-25 year old) but his fundamentals were still all-time
