Starting in 87...
I'd give 87 to Magic. That was the best season of his career. MJ was a force of nature but Magic was just as dominant while also pushing his team to 65 wins (and the eventual championship). Magic's experience and leadership combined with such a dominant season are what puts him over the top.
88 MJ - Similar to the year before but Magic slipped just enough to not keep up with that force of nature in Chicago.
89 MJ
90 MJ
91 MJ
92 MJ
93 Olajuwon This is close. I can't complain about any of the top 3 (Barkley, Olajuwon, MJ) winning it but it's near impossible for me to choose between Olajuwon and MJ. Olajuwon led the league in blocks. MJ led the league in steals. Both were excellent two way players. Olajuwon won the DPOY and led his team to 10 more wins than the year before. MJ increased his average by 2.5 points to pick up the slack while his teammates were pacing themselves after 2 championships and Olympic play. And they still won 57 games. I can't think of another season that's closer than this one. The DPOY makes the difference.
94 Olajuwon
95 Robinson
96 MJ
97 MJ
98 MJ Same as 1987. Malone had a great season but MJ's experience and leadership pushing his team to 62 wins despite missing Pippen for 38 games is huge. But I can't complain that Malone won it.

87 I think MJ just performed so much better than everyone else it's not close at all. My #2 for this year would be Bird, not Magic.
93 Again I think MJ was just so much better. But Olajuwon would be my distant #2 choice.
98 Malone was a veery close #2 but it's only because MJ got old and a lot worse...for his standard anyways.
99 My #2 pick would be Shaq. Malone would be #3.

You do know this is shit no one at the time was thinking? :lol

Surely some thought that. I don't think it's even controversial at all.

Nope.
Magic received 65 first place votes.
Jordan received... 10.
Bird received... 1.
Your post reminds me of people who way after the fact suggest something completly different and act like that was even remotely happening at the time.
like people discrediting 2017 Westbrook. "How did Russ win?!" Cause he was the most valuable player that year. Simples.
These votes are just for regular season as MVP is.

Dr J over Kareem and Moses in 1980 and 1982 is a reach OP. As is Bird over Moses in 1983. As is Robinson over Hakeem in 1994.
I also see Magic > MJ in 1987 (just 40 wins) and Malone > MJ in 1998 although that one is close because Pippen missed a lot of games and MJ kept them afloat.

Well that's cause the team only won 40 games. But surely at the time many people already thought Jordan was better than Bird and Magic.

Dr J was top 3 in MVP so I don't think it's that outlandish. I do think he deserved the MVPs in those years.
1994 though, I think Robinson was clearly better. Not close.

Top 3 is different than finishing above Kareem and Moses in one of their best years.
And why is Robinson clearly better than Hakeem in 1994? Not to mention the Rockets won more games than the Spurs.

His production in the regular season was clearly better, but he's obv a fool if he's implying Robinson was clearly a better player. No chance Robinson duplicates Hakeem's playoff run that year.

I was talking about the RS. I don't think clearly better is fair. Hakeem had a historic defensive year.

I was talking strictly production, just statistically, it's pretty indisputable Robinson had a better regular season than Hakeem both in averages and advanced metrics, that was a legitimately ATG regular season by him.

Agreed.
Although I think Robinson had the clearly better RS in 1995 but not in 1994. In 1994, Hakeem was the better defender and led the Rockets to more wins so it's close. Come to think of it, 1994 is one of the closest races.
