Rick Carlisle to join Phil Jackson & Pat Riley tonight ?
Phil Jackson & Pat Riley are the only two dudes in basketball history to win championships as players, and then win multiple championships as a coach, with multiple teams.
Rick Carlisle can join them tonight, as the least decorated of the 3, by far, lol …. to make it 3 people in basketball history to do it:

- 1988 Albany Patroons (CBA) Carlisle was born in upstate NY, so this was home team for him. Also part of the Albany Katroons 1988 title: Phil Jackson, George Karl, Terry Stotts, Scott Brooks.
As a Coach:
- 2011 Dallas Mavericks (beating Pat Riley’s Miami Heat superteam)

- 2025 Indiana Pacers ?
Carlisle also coached the 2001-2003 Detroit Pistons, and despite handily beating Larry Brown’s 76ers team in the playoffs, was screwed over just months later, by owner Bill Davidson & his friend (at the time) Larry Brown.
Rick, despite winning coach of the year months earlier, was axed just months before the 2003/2004 Pistons championship season.

It's also known that he was drawing up most of the Pacers plays as an assistant coach while Bird was the head coach.

A shit ton of players went on to become head coaches from that team. Like half the roster. Bird & Carlise were successful. Ainge & McHale weren't bad either. Dennis Johnson was only a head coach for over 20 games.

And Ainge has gone on to be perhaps the best exec in the game behind Sam Presti. It’s like the basketball equivalent of the Green Bay coaching tree.
