Ridiculous market-changing contracts?
Amid the ongoing negotiations between the Chicago Bulls and restricted free agent Josh Giddey, I came across this snippet:
Joe Cowley: Bulls and Josh Giddey are having good dialogue, per a source, but the Giddey camp is dug in on the Suggs contract – $30 million per. Let the posturing continue.
When I saw the ridiculous 5-year $150.5M contract that Jalen Suggs signed, I knew it would break the market if a 12 PPG unlikely-to-ever-make-an-allstar-first-team-anything-or-DPOY caliber of player could make $30M, it makes others guys believe they are worth a higher salary, too. I'm just surprised to see it referenced so directly.
With that in mind, what are other market-breaking/resetting deals that you recall changing the free agency landscape?
Re: Ridiculous market-changing contracts?
Not sure a starting pg on an up and coming playoff team making 30 mill when the top salary is now over 70 mill is ridiculous?
Re: Ridiculous market-changing contracts?
Suggs is considered elite defensively among guards and young players with good agents get paid on potential. Orlando will have to blow their team up in a few years but it seems that's how it's going to happen for any team that wants to compete. I'm not sure what his"fair" contract would be but I am completely sure that for a few years now we've had the summer anual freak out over the increase in size of player contracts. SGA will make over twice as much per year as Jordan did in his highest-paid year. And when Jordan made 30+ mil his salary blew away everyone else. The money is much bigger so if you ate trying to judge what guys should get paid you should be factoring that in or else you will be freaking out all summer.

Well it comes down to situations where you decide between alienating a player, paying a player what the market dictates, or overpaying early.
Suggs, Giddey and Kuminga all came out of the same draft, picked consecutively 5th, 6th, 7th. The Magic paid Suggs early and in all likelihood paid more than either Giddey or Kuminga will earn. Some are suggesting that Giddey and Kuminga have the potential to be a team's 2nd option, maybe even lead a franchise if they wring every drop of potential out of themselves. On the other hand, nobody will ever say that about Suggs. He is a key 3 and D role player, but ultimately just a role player. I don't see him as better than Josh Hart, yet he is paid much more handsomely.
So is paying early and extra beneficial? Will Giddey and Kuminga both hold out waiting for competitive offers from teams that have no cap space to sign an offer sheet?
These are the delicate factors a GM and POBO has to weigh. But I think even you agree, paying Suggs that along with what they have to pay Wagner and Banchero will lead to them having to break up the team.

I think if Giddey plays like he did to finish the season after they traded off LaVine, he is absolutely worth around $30M. But the concept of bidding against yourself needs to be a driving factor in negotiations, and the Bulls are taking advantage of that fact.

It really isn't. Giddey averaged 21/11/9 on 50/46/81 splits post-ASB and they went 12 - 7 in those games. He has all-star potential and Bulls are going nowhere without him and refuse to tank.
Re: Ridiculous market-changing contracts?
Now jon koncak was a ridiculous contract
Re: Ridiculous market-changing contracts?
It's kind of mind-blowing to think but at 30 mil per Derrick White is actually a bargain.
Re: Ridiculous market-changing contracts?
A.Grimes was also drafted the same year as Suggs, Kuminga and Giddey. It all makes sense now why Grimes is hell bent on getting $25mil per year. Suggs deal set the market

He is. But I'm a bit nervous for his longer term value based on that below par Olympics showing. It makes me possibly believe he is a system player.
As the Celtics completely overhaul the roster and likely his role, if he falls back to his Spurs level of play, he will still be tradable, but Celtics would be kicking themselves for not trading him now.
Right now his value is at such a sky hight level that they could probably get 2 firsts if they are simultaneously taking back dead weight (Ex: Kuzma, Patrick Williams)
Re: Ridiculous market-changing contracts?
Just going to the Olympics was great for White. He needs a"system" that let's him take open shots. Ok, what's the problem? Neither the Celtics nor any other nba team is going to hold it against him that he doesn't get minutes over Steph Curry. Since he's 31 his trade value is probably as high as it will ever be but with the Celtics wanting to keep him that doesn't matter.
Re: Ridiculous market-changing contracts?
Multiple weeks later, Giddey, Cam, Grimes, Kuminga all unsigned RFA that are holding out even though there are no teams with capspace aside from Nets.
Each of them is reported to want major deals that they are likely benchmarking against Suggs and other terrible contracts. Can't blame them.
Re: Ridiculous market-changing contracts?
Suggs did get overpaid but every other part of his contract was a favor for the Magic. Descending every year(26 mil his 5 th year) and no player option. He just makes some extra money when it doesn’t matter too much with Paolo on his rookie deal. Tbf McDaniels also got a similar contract while he plays a similar role

McDaniels is flat out better and has shown he can outperform his regular season averages in the playoffs on 3 separate occasions already. Suggs in his 1 playoff opportunity fell off hard.
