Spurs sign Fox to max extension
The San Antonio Spurs and star guard De'Aaron Fox have reached an agreement on a four-year, $229 million max extension, his agent told ESPN's Shams Charania. Fox was set to be an unrestricted free agent next summer and now is locked in long-term with the team that traded for him at this past February's trade deadline.
Fox, 27, was eligible for a contract extension with the Sacramento Kings -- his former team -- last summer, but instead bypassed an extension that would've added $165 million and three years to his current, rookie-max contract. Fox signed a five-year deal worth $163 million in 2020, weeks after Sacramento drafted Tyrese Haliburton with the No. 12 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

So why the hell did they draft Harper lol
Re: Spurs sign Fox to max extension
They should start making the playoffs this year. Got some talented players, legit second star and Wembanyama is the second-best center and best defensive player in the league.
Re: Spurs sign Fox to max extension
It had to be done even though it's not a great fit.
He is still a valuable trade asset if he gets traded next off season. 3 years control left for an all star, someone will give up something if value for that. And he's not a headcase so that helps.
Re: Spurs sign Fox to max extension
The NBA is broken. Teams feel obligated to pay guys who will never lead a team to a title to the max because they're scared some other idiot will poach away a career "good not great" player.
I would have tried to flip Fox for Trae if I were the Spurs.
Re: Spurs sign Fox to max extension
I don't get it. Fox isn't that good so that contract is hard to justify, even moreso after drafting Harper.

Yep. Alot of 'really good but not quite elite' players getting max deals that, let's face it, aren't really franchise cornerstones as far as building a championship team around them( and in the case of Fox, not like he's a major gate attraction on top of it).

The Spurs just look like they have absolutely no clue how to build a team around Wemby.
Fox is a speedy guard that doesn't fit a 7'3" big man's game. The team has a glut of guards and none of them are elite shooters (Fox, Vassel, Castle, Harper). This is now $72M and rising in guards that are bad fits (Fox + Vassell).
I could even understand bad offensive fits and great defensive fits, but they aren't that either. Fox is a bit of a gambler and can rack up steals, but man-to-man is average. Vassell is very average defensively.

They've been drafting the same explosive comboguards for a decade now, don't know what their plan is.

Yes.
This is what happens with artificial caps.
