Re: Natural Dreadlocks
prepare to smell really bad and alienate your friends and women :lol

Re: Natural Dreadlocks
I started natural dreads for a period in college. It wasn't that bad looking/smelling, but I hated it for sports, so I got rid of them.

Re: Natural Dreadlocks
My, why thank you kind fellows for introducing me to this rambunctious, but charming style of hair.
My, back when I was a young teenager (Quite a while back, might I add) I used to have this hairstyle. It was not the most comfortable, nor attractive, but it served its purpose and had given me access to the glory hole of a Jamaican beauty.

NO!! wax is the enemy of dreads, all hair will dread naturally..it just takes time.
You don't get dreadlocks, you grow them. - A Wise Man

A common misconception about dreadlocks is that they smell and are dirty. This is not the case, your SUPPOSE to wash dreadlocks REGULARLY, some people go over 3 days or every week depending on how much oil your hair produces. CLEAN HAIR KNOTS FASTER THAN DIRTY HAIR!

Re: Natural Dreadlocks
You could backcomb your hair if you want to, but your better off just letting it do its thing. Just get some Dr.Bronners organic soap and dont comb your hair.

Re: Natural Dreadlocks
How often should you wash your hair???

Re: Natural Dreadlocks
How often should you wash your hair???
Thats a good question, it depends on your hair. When you start to wash less and less your scalp will gradually produce less grease. But you need to keep your hair clean so it will knot. So just experiment and see what works best for you.

This is tough umm depending on how long your hair is you may see results in a few months but it will take 9-12 before real dreads start to form.

Re: Natural Dreadlocks
I grew my hair naturally into locks...
It was one of the strongest character building experiences in my life....
Your hair goes through so many stages...
To wash and not comb brush your hair is a challenge. I played football at the time and it even took longer to lock and it would look so crazy....

There probably real but they are backcombed, which is differently then growing natural locks.

Re: Natural Dreadlocks
My son started growing dreads about 4 months ago. This was his 3rd attempt at growing them.
I wasn't very happy about it, but hey he's a grown man what can I do. However he came over the other day and they are starting to look really good now. They are about 8 inches long so far. He shampoos his hair everyday, with some dread shampoo he found. He doesn't put anything else in it, no wax or anything. His girlfriend re-twists them about once a month.
I have a girlfriend that started growing hers when she turned 50. She turned 55 on Sept 17 and they are as long as some of the pictures posted. She goes to the shop and gets her re-twisted once a month also.
I don't like people like lil Wayne who just lets them grow and look horrible.
Getting them re-twisted REALLY helps the look and keeps them individual, if you dont they just mat up together and that's when they look nasty (IMO).
My friends as well as my sons look good (imo) because you can still see their scalp and each individual dread.

It sounds like your son and girlfriend both had their hair sectioned off and backcombed into dreads. That is one way to get dreadlocks, but true dreads are grown not made. I want my hair to do whatever it wants to do, I don't like the sectioned look where you can tell their not natural. But to each his own, I hope to have natural locks one day.
