Roy Hibbert fined $75k for remarks
NEW YORK -- Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert has been fined $75,000 by the NBA for using inappropriate and vulgar language during postgame interviews following the Pacers' 91-77 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
"While Roy has issued an apology, which is no doubt sincere, a fine is necessary to reinforce that such offensive comments will not be tolerated by the NBA," said NBA Commissioner David Stern.
Well I expected it to be 100k, but seems fair.

I can turn on my TV right now and watch all manner of deplorable violence being acted out right there. But don't you DARE utter a no-no word on television or you're going to pay.
But you know...freedom and all that.

Re: Roy Hibbert fined $75k for remarks
That is alot of money for a joke that isn't really a gay slur, more like a bad joke....kinda like "that's what she said."

75k for something that didn't impact the game at all.
Yet only 5-10k for this:

Lol NBA fines players for saying 'no homo' yet NFL players make homophobic comments and nothing happens. NBA is a such a joke.
-
Re: Roy Hibbert fined $75k for remarks
Seems excessive to me, but at least the Dictator didn't ban him from game 7.
-
Re: Roy Hibbert fined $75k for remarks
Lmao, flopping would already be done with it if the leauge gave out these kind of significant fines for something that ..... actually affects the game

As much as I love the guy...
How much would KG's fine be if they bothered to look back at all the ridiculous language that's come out of his mouth and into the ears of people watching Wolves/Celtics games?

Hahaha, holy shit, I was thinking the exact same thing.
And you gotta believe the only reason they care about fining anyone anything in the first place is because of brand integrity/image.
But why/how the NBA views offensive language as more damaging to their brand than flopping... well... I have no ****ing clue.
-
Re: Roy Hibbert fined $75k for remarks
Well, it was for his "Vulgar language," so that probably includes the "Mother****ers" he pulled as well.

So one of your employees calling you an old crackerazzcracker will receive less of a punishment than someone that flops... :applause: :applause:

Re: Roy Hibbert fined $75k for remarks
it was for the "motherfucker" and not for "no homo". Whether we like it or not, a player of the best basketball league should not be calling media members "motherfuckers" even if he feels like media isn't doing its job well. This way coaches/media members can call players "motherfuckers" for playing bad and wasting their time.
also, Kobe got fined $100k for his incident in 2011. Kobe didn't even say those words while sitting near a mic like hibbert.

Athletes swear during their press conferences or comments, it's not a big deal. I've seen Kobe drop f bombs more times than I can remember without repercussions. It's a casual and loose, saying "MOtha****AS" wasn't an insult to the media.
-
Re: Roy Hibbert fined $75k for remarks
Just eliminate those post game interviews if you are so worried about your athletes.

this. people don't understand that you can't call a group of people you don't know "motherfuckers" on tv while being a player in the best basketball league in the world.
i think flopping should result in a tech but i also think that this fine is completely justified.

Still something you can't say in public, especially directed at the media

or athletes can start acting like grown-ups. he could have easily said the same thing without using the word "motherfuckers"

If he didn't say the no homo comments he wouldn't be getting fined for swearing. It's not a big deal as long as he doesn't start making it a part of every press conference then he's just going overboard.

I strongly believe that he got fined for using the word motherfuckers. No one outside of ESPN thinks "no homo" is a gay slur.
As a professional in that position he is entrusted with certain responsibilities, one of which is to not use certain language. And it's not just implied, every player coming into the league is taught certain things, this being one of them.

Disagree. Can't call the media "motherfvckers" on national TV. That's an obvious fine to me
-
Re: Roy Hibbert fined $75k for remarks
No problem with a 75k fine, hibbert knew it was comming and said at the time he'd accept it. The issue is that flopping fines which affect the actual game are so small and not a %. Any number they pick is crap because it just means big name players can afford to wear the fine while others can't. Should be an in game play like a technical foul or should be a % based fine on their salary or match fee.

KG had the intelligence to realize that he shouldn't say that stuff in a nationally televised press conference
Feel bad for Hibbert as I don't think he had any malice behind his words, but its about what I expected. No way was the NBA going to tacitly approve of his words by not taking a chunk out of his wallet in 2013. Still relative to what he earns, it should be a big deal.

5-10k for a flop, but 75k for a comment seems unbalanced.

seems right, the nba will make an example of roy hibbert to keep the gay sympathizers on the nbas side.

then have the problem with the rule. Stop bringing lebron's name into things that are not related to him. There is no set fine for using "mother****ers" in press conference but there is a set fine for flopping. I think there should be a tech called for flopping but stop bringing lebron into every thread to make your players look better when lebron didn't call media "motherfuckers" for writing about him every day.
I am sure if a white player said something like ""Nah, I didn't steal it, I'm not black.", he would be fined and ridiculed by media for months. Both "no homo" and "i'm not black" are jokes. The "no homo" thing was said after calling every media member "mother****ers".
If lebron said the same thing . ISH would be shut down for a couple of hours.
