1998 All Star Game
George Karl subbed Kobe out because he was playing well and stealing the show in MJ's last all star game. The game was close till Kobe sat out and the East went on to win.
Don't know why Karl benched the best player on the court in a close game, for the East to go on and win.
Here is MJ saying he didn't want to get dominated by Kobe.....

You can find the game yourself because it is all over the net and start watching in the 2nd half. Dumb move on Karl but I can see why he didn't want an 18 year old steal the show and perhaps winning the game on the same court with MJ.

In 1998, Kobe would be chosen for the first of 15 NBA All-Star games and would score 18 points, leading the West in scoring. However, it was the Michael Jordan-led Eastern Conference that would emerge victorious by a score of 132-120.
The game brought increased infamy to Bryant, as many pegged him as being selfish and representing all that was wrong with the NBA. He was considered too young, too brash, and an unwilling passer. It was also the year in which Bryant infamously waved off a screen from Karl Malone to take Jordan one-on-one. "When young guys tell me to get out of the way," said Malone after the game, "that's a game I don't need to be in."

Re: 1998 All Star Game
.
people remember this game as kobe playing well against MJ, even though he didn't score on MJ even one time - otoh, Jordan scored ON kobe numerous times in this game, to the point where he was laughing at the youngster (the third gif below).

and if you look at Jordan vs. Kobe over the years, Jordan scored ON kobe a super-ton...
whereas kobe scored ON jordan literally 3, maybe 4 times in his entire career... as usual, jordan with the substance.
Damn.. just watched that clip OP posted. I thought OP was lying, but MJ actually did say he was glad he didn't get dominated by Kobe.. the utter relief. Little did he know that years later, Kobe would output a half for the ages vs him. :lol
jordan never guarded kobe for even one possession in kobe's 55 point game - it was 100% Stackhouse guarding Kobe.
point me to ONE clip in that game where kobe scored on Jordan.
and why bring up him challenging MJ in the all-star game, when he didn't score on him even one time, and Jordan scored on him a ton?
jordan scored on kobe a ton of times, while kobe never scored on jordan but twice in his entire career.

even rookie kobe was still twice as alpha as todays "best" player in the game :lol :lol :lol

i remember when iverson had the same attitude vs jordan - and iverson actually TOOK jordan and scored ON him the one time he had the chance.

4 for Jordan, only 1 for Kobe... what else is new.
this is one of the two times in Kobe's entire career, that he TOOK Jordan - scored ON him when he was jordan's immediate assignment.
-
Re: 1998 All Star Game
kobe has TAKEN jordan twice in his entire career - the above gif being one of them.
whereas, jordan has TAKEN kobe more than 15 times different times - 4 times in the 1998 all-star game alone.

Jordan at 35 = best player in the league. :applause:
Kobe at 36 = inefficient chucker. :oldlol:

Re: 1998 All Star Game
Eh, why was Kobe even at the All-Star game that year?
He averaged 15.8 ppg off the bench that year. I mean, really good numbers for a 2nd year 6th man but he was starting on the All-Star team when he didn't even start for his own team.
I know, I know. He was voted in.

Re: 1998 All Star Game
i'm going to post all the FG's of jordan scoring ON kobe.
see with jordan, it's easy to post substance - no need to post weak fly-bys or reach in's where kobe 1) wasn't really guarding him, 2) was only the help defender not the primary, 3) or fell asleep and let him go back door for an easy one.
no need to post weak stuff like that - jordan has tons of highlights of him making a move and TAKING kobe and scoring ON him mono-a-mono... whereas, kobe has truly TAKEN Jordan twice in his entire career.

nah... not going to bother... there are better things to post about - everyone knows jordan > kobe.
i really just wanted to make a point that in kobe's entire career, he has taken jordan mono-a-mono twice, one of which is posted at the top of this page.
jordan took kobe mono-a-mono 4 times in the 1998 all-star game alone (gifs of each posted on the first page), and scored on him mono-a-mono over 15 times in the few times they met.

Re: 1998 All Star Game
I remember the game where teenage Kobe dropped 40+ on 3peat MJ, literally made MJ plead for pippen to take on Kobe, "get on him scottie" MJ yelled in a desperate and hoarse voice
also remember when Kobe dropped 50+ on MJ and when phil took Kobe out just to preserve the little shred of dignity and self respect MJ had remaining. That game ended MJ's attempt at comeback

It's funny how the "ultimate alpha" Jordan would just sit back and let his team get lit up for 42 points by Kobe in two quarters..why not step up and take the challenge to guard him yourself?

nobody askin you to "play" you brought yourself into this conversation and you can see your way out of it fvck boy
Kobe fans never say anything about Kobe being elite in 98, it's pretty well known that he didn't really become elite until 2000.
if im gonna pull up gifs of a player getting scored on, i'm not gonna be pulling up gifs of him gettting scored on as a rookie, when he was guarding the best player in the league as if that actually proves some type of point
