the only movies i would have been angry if i went without are
shawshank redemption
schindlers list
taxi driver
good fellas
forest gump
rainman
2001
full metal jacket
fight club
fargo
interstellar
the matrix
rocky
gladiator
big lebowski
the wrestler
everything else is just really good. these ones had more meaning behind them or they were truly unique
one comedy to throw in would be dumb and dumber

Pretty good list tbh.
Although I just rewatched Gladiator for the first time in many years and found that it didn’t hold up that well IMO. If it wasn’t for Russell Crowe it would just be meh for me

There's so many movies you could add to this. Of ones that haven't been named yet
Pulp Fiction
Die Hard
No Country For Old Men
Dark Knight
And just for the performances from the leads, American History X and Training Day
yeah over 100 years of movies so basically something for everyone
could be a long time before the dark knight is topped in that genre
although i don't watch a lot of comic stuff so if it was topped i wouldn't necessarily know
a couple 21st century dramas i felt were worth watching more than once

ok but overrated in my opinion
however i wouldn't go as far as scorsese in saying "i don't think they're cinema"

he's 100% correct.
cinema is a nolan directed batman film. a film with a lot of attention given to the different key elements. story, visual effects, score, etc. hell, even the new batman blows any marvel movie out of the water.
marvel movies are made for mouthbreather audiences like kenny. quick dopamine hit. no substance, all flash.

i'm familiar with the pov
other directors have said similar things
ultimately it's kind of like whatever to me
some would say nolan and scorsese are middle brow trash
movie wars are pretty pointless
i get more value out of rewatching this than a lot of things considered "cinema"

Objectively,
Ordet
Through a Glass Darkly
2001: A Space Odyssey
Rosemary's Baby

Subjectively,
Ordet
Mamma Roma
Le Bonheur
Eden and After
Out 1
Fox and His Friends
The Hunters, 1977
Stalker
From the Life of the Marionettes
The Stranger, 1991

i'm more inclined to try to see value in variety
dr. strangelove and spartacus are war movies
so is this which is considered a cult classic

you mentioned both ingmar bergman and woody allen
i liked many of woody's movies
his favorite bergman movie is also mine

And I probably should have added The Sacrifice on my subjective list instead of Stalker, leaving Ordet as the only film on both lists.

i don't have rankings or lists just things that meant something to me for one reason or another and perhaps might to others
i don't have rankings or lists just things that meant something to me for one reason or another and perhaps might to others
I guess I've been thinking about an objective list for a while, but the subjective list is of my personal favourites. I maintain lists of favourites, things to see, etc. With the exception of Rifkin"s Festival, I've seen every Woody. It's like that with a lot of directors. It necessitates keeping lists. I know guys like you that don't. I can't do that. I'm a list guy. And we aren't talking about a few dozen. I've got hundreds of lists -- some are kept in an orderly fashion, others I scribble onto paper. It's how my mind works.
