The Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell contracts ($195M) would be the largest rookie extension in league history if either player earns All-NBA. Ben Simmons $177.2M is currently no. 1

Mitchell and Tatum getting player options is bad news long-term for bad teams seeking to retain drafted players. Trend since AD (e.g. Lillard, Towns, Booker) had been away from those in Designated Rookie Extensions.

Here he comes NY! :(

Re: Draft day, free agency, training camp, pre season...
[h=1]What led to Donovan Mitchell, Utah Jazz agreeing to maximum contract extension for All-Star guard[/h]
really? :facepalm
The designated rookie max deal has escalators that could bring Mitchell’s five-year total to $195.6 million. That extra money would come if Mitchell earns All-NBA honors in the 2020-21 season, the last year of his rookie-scale contract, in which he’ll be paid $5.2 million.
that might be a bad thing. He might play more selfishly trying to put up numbers. Can he get the ball from Clarkson though?
When Mitchell burst onto the NBA scene as a rookie in 2017 after being selected 13th overall in that year’s draft, it was clear as day that the Jazz had found the face of the franchise they had been looking for.
As Mitchell’s growth on the court continued, he was cemented in the minds of the Jazz brass as the cornerstone of the team moving forward, and it became a foregone conclusion that the young star would end up with a max contract.
You need to leave Rudy, It's ridiculous
Though the Jazz didn’t need any more evidence that they had a superstar in Mitchell, the guard was selected to his first All-Star team in 2020, stepped deeper into his role as the vocal leader of the Jazz and dazzled during the playoffs.
superstar, cornerstone, face of franchise! :lol

Re: Draft day, free agency, training camp, pre season...
Knicks assistant coach Johnnie Bryant never became the magnet for Jazz superstar Donovan Mitchell, as the franchise had hoped. The 35-year-old Bryant was known as a solid player-development coach in his six years in Utah. But a chief reason why he was wooed by the Knicks away from Utah to serve on Tom Thibodeau’s staff was to be a lure for Mitchell, sources said.
What the Jordan Clarkson re-signing means to the Utah Jazz
besides the other 4 guys standing around watching Clarkson go 1 on 5?
With the re-signing of Jordan Clarkson, the Utah Jazz have bought back their core from last season, giving them a good shot at a deep playoff run.
Good shot? They still have no PF or Favors spotting up in the corner. Lack versatility, size D...
The only player that Clarkson cost the Jazz was Dante Exum. While Exum was a terrific ball-handler, he was not a good shooter. In fact, he struggled to get any consistent playing time during his time with the franchise.
several picks
Where Clarkson is an upgrade over Exum is that his shooting required a defender to respect him, so that they can’t cheat off his to help on the likes of Donovan Mitchell, Bojan Bogdanovic, Mike Conley, or Joe Ingles. This allows them to provide a more efficient offense for the Jazz.
where is he not an upgrade over Exum? Exum sucked! But so does Clarkson
Clarkson averaged the third-highest points per game on the Jazz squad last season. He was only behind Mitchell and Bogdanovic who both averaged more than 20 points per game. This was a big reason the Jazz needed to re-sign him.
Big reason they shouldn't have. Conley and Gobert need to be scoring more than him. They do it within the framework of the offense
Traditionally the Jazz have always had trouble scoring, preferring to rely on their defense so they can score more than their opposition, With Clarkson on the team, this is changing. They averaged 111.3 points per game which was good enough for 18th in the NBA last season.
Had more to do with Conley, Bojan and spacing around their bigs but hey give the guy playing 25 minutes the credit!
Last season was the most efficient shooting by the Jazz from the floor since the 2008-09 season. It was the best that they had shot from deep ever. This was made possible by the Jazz having four players average 15 points per game or more.
Was made possible by having 4 guys spacing the floor around a rim running threat
With the shortened break between seasons, it is going to be incredibly important for any team hoping to compete in the playoffs that they are able to hit the ground running. Having early chemistry could impact whether you get home court-seeding in the playoffs.
Who cares? The Jazz might tank so they don't have to face certain teams that they can't match up with because they still don't have a starting 4!

Sometimes free agency can be a MacGuffin. It’s not actually about who a team signs but about how the front office works and acts and the choices it makes. That can be much more telling about the future than just the players they did or did not sign. theathletic.com/2214718/2020/1…

yep. Hard to get too excited about the Jazz future with the long term deals they have

Re: Draft day, free agency, training camp, pre season...
Hayward and BB are similar players, play the same position, and both hit FA entering their age 30 seasons. And while peak Hayward is probably better than peak BB…that peak was 4 years and a surgery ago. They were quite similar players, with BB being slightly better, the 2 years heading into free agency. Yet somehow Hayward gets nearly twice as much much (4yrs $73.1m vs 4yrs $128m). Insane!!!

I assume BB is Bojan. He's no where near the player Hayward is. Better shooter. Maybe better scorer. Hayward is much better at everything else

Two serviceable point guards who are starting to pick up traction in the free agent market: Emmanuel Mudiay and Yogi Ferrell.

George Hill and Trevor Ariza are arguably better than every remaining NBA free agent. If OKC doesn’t flip Hill sometime between now and the start of the season, and Ariza by the trade deadline, both for more picks and young players, I’d be shocked.

Certainly better than Clarkson
