Cooper picks Larry Bird, not MJ as toughest to guard.

Bird:
"One time, I turned, I jumped, and he still went, his knees almost hit me in the chin. And that's when I realized that this guy's pretty special for his jumping ability. Cat quick. He closed down a pass lane as fast as anybody I've ever seen. And just a phenomenal player."

Also Bird.
"Larry Bird says every time anybody talks to him about guys who guarded him back in the 80s, who was the best. He doesn't even hesitate to say Michael Cooper was the best defensive player he ever played against"

1987 Cooper came off the "bench"
West Media literally brought him that Award
108.4 Drtg.........absolutely pathetic. Even 2022 Marcus Smart is higher rated.
1 SPG
0.5 BPG
Imagine if he played for the 1987 Bulls instead of NBA's glorified LAL franchise!
Would he have won DPOY!......................ZERO chance.
Also Bird.

When Larry Bird is asked about a defensive specialist like Cooper - what is he supposed to say?... "Cooper couldn't defend like MJ"???... c'mon - he would never say that even if it were true and certainly not in a homer format like they had.
Unless he's asked a direct comparison, it's meaningless because he'll say MJ's the best too if asked about him in a different forum..
Of course, MJ's goat scoring will always overshadow his defense, so that shows how amazing his defense must have been.. I guarantee that he has so many defensive plays that you've never seen before if you pay attention like catching the ball with 2 hands when someone that is pretty close tries to pass the ball over his head - it's pretty uncanny and looks not really real or human.. If you watch him enough, you will see this play...
Or his play on X-Man before the windmill jam to finish the game - unparallelled reflexes... he did the same thing to Tom Chambers - deflected it out of Chambers hands and then was already there when Chambers caught the ball and tried to move it - it looks crazy... crap like that

I already stated earlier in this thread that no guard should win the award, their overall defensive impact isn't there. That includes Cooper, MJ, GP, & Smart.
I just highlighted Cooper's man defense. Using DRTG to judge someone's individual defense is the most retarded thing you can do. By that metric Dave Cownes is the 2nd best defensive player ever and Paul Pierce was a better defender than MJ.
How bad does it feel for you Jordan stans that Bird picked Cooper over MJ as the better defender on him? :oldlol:

.
Official Fraud Exposure Report
Hakeem had massive inflation of home stats in 90', just like Alvin Robertson in 86', and MJ in 88'... But these extreme cases of inflation were one-offs due to personal issues that affected their home/road performance, for example... Otherwise, their other years have the standard "normal" inflation that occurred in previous eras due to tougher road conditions (no days off, no private jets, etc) and the subsequent poor road records compared to today's teams.. Only 2 teams had .500 records on the road in 1988, while half the league does today (15 teams).
To summarize, the "normal' inflation of home stats in previous eras was due to the tougher road environments and significantly worse road records that teams had back then, while the abnormal one-offs of massive home inflation like 90' Hakeem, 88' Jordan, or 86' Robertson are likely due to personal issues that affected home and road play.. Carry on.

Umm no, Bird has been asked this question multiple times and he has always picked Cooper.

So you are not mad that a BENCH player who only played Defense exclusively (Magic and Showtime ran offense) for 15 mins so easily awarded over any other STARTER!
This is not a 6th MAN OF THE YEAR award.
Cooper dont care he gets enough BPG or SPG defensively. He is admitting it. He just plays good defense for 15 mins and thats good enough to bag award.
Because he is a CELTIC or a LAL, Magic or Larry will promote him to media guys to vote that elusive DPOY award for him.
Can you imagine being a GRIZZLY player, starting all 82 games, playing killer defense, being top 5 in SPG, top 15 BPG and no media person cares to vote for you!
Its not about LBJ stan or MJ stan or cooper stan.......................its about daylight robbery and favorism towards certain teams over bottom feeding teams.

Most respected NBA writer during the 80's on the '88 DPOY race.
“If he’s healthy, I know it’s Michael Cooper, but you can’t give (Defensive Player of the Year) to him this year. Do you go for a shot blocker like Mark Eaton? A guy with steals who may or may not be a good defensive player? I don’t know. Since I’m not voting for Jordan (for MVP), who does steal the ball a lot but who is a good defensive player, anyway, I’m giving him this one. Michael Jordan.” - Bob Ryan
Ryan gave MJ a pitty vote. :lol

Not surprised at all.
Imagine if 1986 - 1990 MJ was a LAKER or a CELTICS.
1987 DPOY
1988 DPOY
1993 DPOY
There are perks to playing for NBAs Royalty Teams. Back than and even now!.
Reason Shaq, LBJ, AD, Kobe all ran to LA LA Land.
You win championships easier. You win individual accolades easier.
Reason MJ is the GOAT for me. He stuck around in Chi Town despite Bad Boys beatings. Turn them into NBA Elite Teams and an unforgettable DYNASTY.
What Shaq should've done to Orlando,
What LBJ should've done to Cavs,
What Kobe should've done to Charlotte.
What AD should've done to New Orleans

Corrected
by coming off the BENCH.
Not even reaching 100 and 50 after playing all 82 games for SG.
on an NBA's Elitest Team that is literally known for its OFFENSE (SHOWTIME) only.
Dont you see some real Home cooking in La La Land media wise?
NBA trying to punish Physical defense of PISTONS. and historically more defensive minded East Conf. in general.

MJ bought the award in '88.
It has just been exposed.
