The Jazz’s nine retired numbers between 00-99 are more than 17 other teams in the NBA, a significant lot considering only they are the 13th youngest team in the league.
should have 4. Just the HOFers. Rudy would be 5. The fact that anyone thinks this is even a question is a joke. He should be a statue but won't now
In 1993, the Jazz retired number 35 for Darrell Griffth despite his relatively short career. Griffith appeared in 765 games for the Jazz, only 412 of which he started.
His career was long enough. His career certainly started out like he'd be in the rafters putting up all star numbers and helping the Jazz improve greatly. Layden never forgave him for sitting out despite Hansen sucking hard. Came off the bench after his injury. Loved Griff but shouldn't be up there. Mitchell shouldn't be either but obviously will
Jeff Hornacek played in even fewer games for the Jazz, appearing in just 477 games over a six-and-a-half-year period in the 90s. Hornacek averaged 14.4 points and 4.0 assists during his tenure with the Jazz, and helped the team earn two Western Conference titles, but never made an All-Star game in Utah nor was he named to any All-NBA teams.
loved him but the standards have to be higher
Mark Eaton has the best resume among non-Hall of Fame Jazzmen to have their number retired. The big man won two Defensive Player of the Year awards, made five All-Defensive teams, led the league in blocks in four different seasons, and earned an All-Star nod in 1989.
best resume and the biggest joke!
Barring a serious fallout between Gobert and the team that drafted him, the number 27 should unquestionably hang in the Vivint Arena rafters upon his retirement.
let's hope this front office is a bit more adult than ones in the past that gave Dantley's number away to the guy they traded him for! Why isn't Deron up there now that Sloan, the Millers, O'Conner(still an advisor?) etc. are gone?
Perhaps the only question remaining is whether he’ll play well enough in Minnesota to have his number retired by two franchises.
there's a chance even if he is there only a short time. Right now he's the best player on the best Wolves team ever
We will miss you Statue
All signs are pointing to a trade, and it feels like it’s just a matter of time at this point. The media, the GMs, and the players are all on vacation right now but once they get back, that trade is only a matter of semantics.
I know the usually take a vacation this time of year but most of the roster work is usually done by now. This year hardly anything has happened. Doesn't seem like a time to take a vacation
https://thejnotes.com/2022/08/03/utah-jazz-fans-build-time-team/
My personal Jazz roster would be Malone, Maravich, Okur, Bogdanovic, and Clarkson. Malone is a top player ever, and I believe his game would translate well as a modern power forward. Okur and Bogdanovic would space the floor and add some shooting, and Pistol Pete is a do-all offensive player who can run the offense or pull up from deep, even if he never really played with an NBA three-point line. Finally, Jordan Clarkson is a steal at $1. If he’s cold, the offense can play around him, and if he’s hot, we all know he immediately becomes the offense.
You got 1 or 2 right I guess. Clarkson would be on my least favorite Jazz players ever list. Okur would get killed in space and isn't a rim protector or great rebounder or passer. Did 1 thing well. He's a role player at best on this team. Bojan pretty much the same as Okur from the 3. Maybe a role off the bench at best. I'd tank if this is best $15 gets ya
He’s right. The $1 offense in Ingles and Clarkson is hard to pass up, and could you imagine if Mehmet Okur was inserted into the Malone/Stockton lineup? Micheal Jordan and company wouldn’t stand a chance.
I'd pass on Clarkson for free
I'll take Stockton, Gobert, Millsap, Harpring and Ingles.
No other $1 players I'd want so got to go with the two 2's. I'd consider Hayward or Horny if there was another 1$ I liked. I think that team is superior to any in that article. #1 and 3 players in my Jazz history running pick and roll and pick and pop because Stockton would have to step up offensively somehow. Not really in his nature but was capable. Millsap was thier best player post Deron before Rudy. Might want to put the ball in Ingles hands so Stockton could play some off the ball in a scoring role. Defense. Shooting. Passing. Intangibles.
Sad thing is Millsap and Gobert should have be leading the Jazz together for a few years along with Hayward, McCollum... :facepalm
Murray and Mitchell are the same age, and while Murray is undoubtedly the better defender, no one in their right mind would claim that he’s a better player. Mitchell is one of the best scorers in the league, a constant threat to lead the league in points, and is a three-time All-Star. The Jazz could trade him for some extra draft capital, or they could sit back during the 2022-23 NBA season and come back with a vengeance, still being led by Mitchell.
Guess I'm not in my right mind for preferring the two way stat stuffer over the one way inefficient gunner
Without Gobert, the Jazz do not really have a starting center. Hassan Whiteside is still a free agent, Walker Kessler and Kofi Cockburn are rookies, and Udoka Azubuike isn’t exactly a starting quality guy. On top of that, Mike Conley and Patrick Beverly, at this point in their careers, will not lead the team to a title. The Jazz have talent, to be sure. Malik Beasley, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jared Butler, Leandro Bolmaro, Johnny Juzang, and Neckeil Alexander-Walker are all interesting, and Mitchell, Clarkson, Bogdanovic, and the other vets are all reliable, if not great, pieces to have.
they have nothing without Rudy. Back to 2013
Let’s pretend that with their three picks next season and Walker Kessler, the Jazz manage to find two solid players out of those four. That’s not unreasonable, and it would give Mitchell two more solid players to pair with Clarkson, who also fits the timeline. Jarred Vanderbilt, Butler, and Bolmaro are all young, so the odds of Utah having a seriously competitive lineup by 2025 is not a stretch, and Mitchell will only be 28, just starting to peak.
besides the fact that he sucks Clarkson is on a different timeline. Makes no sense. Mitchell does but I think Ainge decided he can't build around him. Ayton/Mitchell on max deals doesn't get me excited sorry! I kind of wanted them to go into the seasons with vets around him just to give him a shot at it until the trade deadline but it makes sense to do it now if you can I think
The Jazz could simply trade Mitchell and start over from scratch, but they don’t need to. There is still a blueprint for long-term success with Mitchell at the helm. Aside from Jayson Tatum and maybe Bam Adebayo, Mitchell is the best player from the 2017 draft class. Neither the Heat or the Celtics are even considering moving on from those young stars, even with Kevin Durant on the line, so the Jazz shouldn’t be in a rush to move on from their best player, who hasn’t even hit his peak yet.
no maybe on Bam. I'd probably rank him lower than 3rd if I looked at the draft
https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/268172/Jazz-Consider-It-Likely-Donovan-Mitchell-Would-Sign-Elsewhere-In-2025
this is part of it but I really don't think they could see a great team with Mitchell as their best player
For the second straight year, Grimes began the offseason training with former NBA All-Star and current University of Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway. He then went out and led the Knicks to the NBA Summer League title game in Las Vegas, averaging 21.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game and shooting 41 percent from the floor.

Part of Grimes’ strong performance in Sin City was his offensive versatility. He showed the ability to get to the basket and create for others, something he didn’t do much of as a rookie, when he was utilized mostly as a 3-point threat. While it seems Miami has no choice but to run it back with their current roster, as they don’t have the cap space to add another player assuming veteran Udonis Haslem returns, an NBA executive told Heavy Sports’ NBA insider Sean Deveney that the Heat will have a “Plan B” in place. Hayward has two years left,” the exec continued. “If you want to give up [Tyler] Herro before you pay him and you want to move [Duncan] Robinson, you would have to add a pick, but those two guys and Omer [Yurtseven], that might be enough to get Hayward if the Hornets decide to reconfigure. It’s a short-term move for Miami, but they need to make their move now. You can play him at the 3 and go big or go small at the 4. He’s a guy they’ve had interest in before.”
When Donovan Mitchell proved himself a star early in his rookie season, things immediately began looking up for Utah.

Joe Ingles was the unlikely hero of this game. He scorched the nets for 27 points and seven three-pointers. Besides Ingles, Utah had five other players score in double-digits. Donovan Mitchell, the rookie sensation, struggled with his shot but took over the point guard role by dishing out 11 assists. Alec Burks and Jae Crowder carried the scoring load from the bench. Dante Exum and Royce O'Neale played lockdown defense on Houston's stars. Down the stretch of the game, the Jazz looked to Donovan Mitchell, and he delivered one of the best highlights in recent memory.
The Utah Jazz are at moment without a real starting center. Rookies Kofi Cockburn and Walker Kessler could maybe prove themselves this season, and Udoka Azubuike is probably going to be a career backup. They could resign Hassan Whiteside, but that former star has been relatively quiet about the inner workings of free agency, so NBA fans have largely forgotten about him.
We really have no idea on Udoka. He was solid starting last year. See if he can stay healthy first
Usually, I enjoy it when a team brings back a former player, especially when that team is the one that gave the player his start. The Jazz took Freedom–then Kanter–third overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. Aside from Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard, and Kemba Walker, that draft class was very disappointing. I can’t knock the Jazz for taking Freedom at third, even if it was a little bit of a stretch.
I can. Jonas was the guy to take and O'Conner didn't because he wasn't coming over for another year.
Why even write this? Kanter is one of the last guys they'd ever look to bring back and makes no sense at all

Where's Towns? Who's Gobert? Mitchell isn't 3rd. He might be behind Brunson after this year!
Beal and Mitchell are very similar. Both are high-volume scorers who are shockingly efficient considering they are the offense, but neither of them plays a lick of defense. LaVine has broken out as one of the most clutch players in the league, and Paul George has remained one of the league’s best players for several years. Personal bias excludes Booker, but if you want to add him, that’s your progitave.
Booker is a lot better than Mitchell. Bigger, tries to play D, sets screens...
In my mind, Mitchell is right in the middle of those superstars. The team success elevates him above LaVine and Beal, who has been on middling teams as the first option. Paul George can and has put a team on his back, and it’s clear that Booker needs help. The last two seasons have not been friendly to James Harden, but it feels wrong to exclude a great scorer and the only MVP on the list.
might be better than Lavine who's never excited me much
Donovan Mitchell has the advantage of being the clear best player on a winning team while putting up insane individual numbers. No one else can make that case, but some players are just better than him, one could argue. That may be the only thing keeping him away from the number one spot.

Mr. James ****in' Dolan to the white courtesy phone stat!
Jones: I don’t think the Jazz have any appetite for Randle. I’m not sure there’s much of an appetite for Reddish. They’ve set a price for Mitchell, and from their perspective, at this point, it’s you meet the price, and they’ll trade him, or you don’t, and they’re going into training camp with him. They don’t feel like they have to trade Mitchell or are obligated. They don’t feel an urgency to trade him. They think they have multiple roads back to being the team they were a couple of years ago. They already have three first-round picks by the end of next season. If they hold onto all of their veterans, they’ll have $36-40 million in cap room. While some may question what free agent would go to Utah? The cap space isn’t about which free agent would go to Utah. The cap space would be used to maneuver in the trade market. They could potentially pull off a trade similar to the one Portland did for Jerami Grant.
the team from two years ago had someone named Gobert! :facepalm
They look at it as if there are three years left on Mitchell’s contract, so if they’re going to trade him, it’s because somebody meets their price. I don’t see the Jazz coming down on their price.
what price? 7 firsts?
Jones: It’s one of those things where it’s been talked about seemingly forever, and pretty much since he signed his second contract. The fifth-year player option was something that raised a bunch of eyebrows. It’s something the Jazz and the fans have been dealing with for years, frankly. If Mitchell wants out, Utah still doesn’t have to trade him right now. He’s got three years on his deal. Next summer, with two years left, that’s probably a sweet spot, which is when the Jazz can trade him and get 75 cents on the dollar.
if they start the year with him and they suck he needs to be gone by the break or everyone else does anyway.
Scotto: Utah has the most leverage if they move Mitchell now. Can they try to compete with him? Sure. But we saw what the team looked like with him and Rudy Gobert, who was a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate and an All-Star. The trade they made didn’t net players who are going to help them. Gobert was the best player in the trade. From a talent aspect, even though they added depth on paper, they took a step backward in terms of competing now. If I’m Utah, and I see the writing on the wall here, I’m trying to really maximize this. Ainge has done this in Boston before when they drafted Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
We haven't seen either with Hardy. We have seen Mitchell without Gobert and it wasn't pretty
Jones: With or without Donovan Mitchell, some of these veterans are going to be on the roster at the start of the season. They can’t move all these guys. Who are the guys Utah can move tomorrow (theoretically)? I think Utah can move Bogdanovic, Vanderbilt, and Beverley. They can move them rather easily. I don’t know how much of a market there is for Conley, Clarkson, or Beasley.
interesting! I can't imagine why anyone wants Clarkson either. I thought Cleveland or Chicago wanted Conley? Maybe at the trade deadline. Partial guarantee next year. Be disappointing if any of them but Beasley is around

Don't thinks so. Danny wants everything. Knicks only want to give up crap they don't want. Doubt Ainge cares about Grimes more than unprotected picks. As long as they don't take Randle and get enough picks Danny will be happy
[h=2]So far, the Utah Jazz have earned a solid B-[/h]I think the Gobert trade and Royce O’Neale trades were home runs. The Jazz got a much larger than expected package for Gobert, getting five picks and a swap. The Jazz also got a decent cast of role players. Some will and can be flipped for more picks, and others fit the rebuilding timeline the Jazz seem to be heading towards.
They likely lost the Gobert trade so B-?
Letting Eric Paschall sign with the Timberwolves is puzzling to me. He is 25 years old, which is a bit older than where the Jazz would like their players to be, but he has shown that he can perform, and be productive as a starter or as a bench piece. Plus, his salary was under $2 million, so Utah could have made him a lower deal to keep playing alongside his childhood friend Donovan Mitchell.
He made sense if they traded all their other vets but they haven't and he couldn't wait around for them
That leads us to the final offseason question for the Jazz. What will they do with Mitchell? No one knows if he will stay or go, although there are plenty of suitors. Letting Paschall go seems to indicate that Mitchell is next, but he hasn’t even requested a trade.
O'Neale more of an indicator
I think the Mitchell situation is a win-win. If they don’t trade him now, maybe he’ll be worth more at the deadline. If they do move on from him, he will certainly bring in a haul of picks and young players. The O’Neale and Gobert moves were fantastic, the only reason the Jazz remain at a B- grade so far is because they do not have a starting center and they entered the 2022 NBA Draft with no picks at all, and only came away with undrafted free agents Johnny Juzang and Kofi Cockburn, which was a little disappointing, all in all.
they do have a starting center though like Tony Jones said they will probably get a vet if they go into the season with their vets with Udoka behind him and Kessler with the Stars. They got Kessler and Bolmaro. Both 1sts. Who cares about Juang and Kofi?
When it’s all said and done, the framework for a rebuild is there, which is better than some teams can say. I think the next season will be a little rough around the edges, but with a vision moving forward, fans should be excited.
traded a statue and have a roster that is a shit show. A little early to get excited about the current mess
https://thejnotes.com/2022/08/07/the-biggest-donovan-mitchell-mock-trade-so-far/
Contenders like the Nets, Lakers, and Heat make the most sense for Mitchell. He is entering his prime and could be the difference between a Conference Finals appearance and a Finals win. Teams who are one big piece away, like the Hornets, Knicks, and Wizards, have also apparently been calling about the star.
1 big piece away? :lol
Apparently, a different deal was almost made.
doesn't sound like any deal has almost been made
The Knicks get their star in Mitchell and unload Fournier and Derrick Rose, which opens up space for Quickley, Grimes, Mitchell, and Brunson. To make the money even, they need to add Rudy Gay, but they could use the frontcourt help anyway.
NY wants Rose
The Knicks will have to pay Westbrook this year, probably work out a buyout with Rose, and overpay Fournier for a few years. The return that makes it all worth it? Seven first-round picks. All the high estimates had the deal maxing out at six picks, so the Jazz get even more than their wildest dreams.
Ainge wants 7. 5 unprotected. He's happy. Replace Rose in the deal and get it done!
Will the Jazz be able to compete for the next two years? Nope, but come 2030 the Jazz should have a small-market dynasty. It’s been done before, and they would be able to build totally through the draft. It’s the right way to do things.
2030!!!
It's either give up Rose or give up some combination of their young guys. Not that they want to give up all those picks that Ainge covets either.

hard to see Ainge making a trade he doesn't win big in. Mitchell might not even end up being a top 5 player in this deal when all is said and done!
Of the O’Neale acquisition specifically, Pelton wrote, “In terms of the moves the Nets did make, sending the Utah Jazz a first-round pick for Royce O’Neale feels like an overpay given how O’Neale’s defense has declined the past two seasons.
didn't make much sense after Durant asked to bee traded
“Coming off an ACL tear, Ingles should be back somewhere around the All-Star break. Milwaukee will have to hope he can get up to speed on defense quickly enough to take advantage of his playmaking and shooting in the postseason.”

I saw him as a minimum vet guy at this point regardless of injury so it was an overpay but great pick up!
