Lindsey acquired Hill to provide some quality depth at the point guard position. Third-year guard Dante Exum is expected to be ready to play when the season begins in the fall after suffering an ACL tear last summer, but just how effective he can be is in question.
If he's not effective he shouldn't be playing period! They got Hill because he's good. Not necessarily to play 1.
Last season, Utah head coach Quin Snyder was forced to start rookie Raul Neto until a trade deadline deal brought Shelvin Mack from Atlanta. While Mack was serviceable, production from the position suffered throughout the year.
He wasn't forced to start Neto. A wing starting line-up was possible as was Burke. Neto played the role well and I think if he'd been given the chance could have played a role closer to what Mack did. Mack was one of their best players so don't say the position suffered with him.
Snyder will ultimately have to decide how much playing time each will get, but Hill gives the coach more options at point guard than he had last season.
Or at least better options.
While the help Hill provides at point guard was the primary reason for acquiring him
I really don't see this. They see him as someone that can fit with the other players starting, coming off the bench and at both guard positions. With his length you might even be able to go really small with him at the 3 at times.
That ability will not only allow Utah head coach Quin Snyder more lineup flexibility, but it will also be a boon if Alec Burks continues to be plagued by injuries like he has been the past two seasons.
Tired of hearing this too. The injury from two years ago was an old injury so despite the way Alec plays I'm not ready to say he's injury prone.
Of course, the addition of Hill put the number of point guards on the Jazz roster at five, meaning it’s likely at least two will not be on the team come fall. Trey Burke is sure to be one of them, as the former lottery pick fell out Snyder’s rotation at the end of the season. If Lindsey can’t find a way to trade him, look for his contract to be bought out.
Tired of this as well. Yes Jerry liked 3 pg's. They only carried 2 last year and to me only Mack and Neto are really pg's. Hill is a combo. Burke is a shooting pg at best. Exum is a wing that could guard pg's and they hope he can play the point one day. I can see them carrying more than 3 certainly.
I can also see Trey being on the team. I'm sure they will try to trade him and make him happy but I could see them carrying him on the roster if they can't. It's the Jazz we're talking about here!
Since Hill will become a free agent next summer, the Jazz gain the benefit of his services during a year in which there’s uncertainty with Exum, but they also maintain the flexibility of moving on from him if Exum makes great strides this season.
Even if Dante steps up Hill is one of your best players. They see him long term. Don't think they make the trade if they think he's just a rental.

The summer league roster for the Utah Jazz is filling up and beginning to take shape. League sources, on Sunday, confirmed to the Salt Lake Tribune that two more players will be coming to SLC in the next week. Those guys are 6-foot-7 small forward JJ O

Not hard to imagine Green getting inside Karl's head like Rodman did. Bogut is better than Longley. Don't remember Byron posting up a lot of guys. What rules they using?

They've said this? They look pretty deep there to me.
Six. Dennis Lindsey’s summer plans: We’re gonna go into the free agent market and be very aggressive. We do want to spend our money fundamentally. If we can’t spend it fundamentally, then we’ll certainly save all of it, all the room that we have or a portion of it for the extensions that we have coming in the next few seasons. So, what we don’t wanna do is extend an amount on a player and then it puts pressure a year or two down the line.
There it is. He's already preparing us for them sitting pat the rest of the off-season. Depends on who you're signing as far as pressure down the line. If you can get Conley you might just have to be pressured later I'm afraid.
Ten. Dennis Lindsey on draft trade that didn’t happen: There was one player, a really good player I can’t name, but he and his prominent agent were really working hard to try to get here during the draft, and I just couldn’t pull it off.

Looking at the roster right now there's a glaring hole at shooting guard. There are plenty of bigs. There are three point guards who all want the ball in their hands. In a wing oriented league the Jazz aren't really bringing much to the table right now with O'Brien and Ford.
The picks are combo guards with size and length. Don't believe Hanlan played the point last year in summer league. They obviously think Ford and O'brien bring something to the table. Partially guaranteed contract for Ford.

He showed he was pretty good being on the world champs.
It's going to be -- in my mind -- the fight to watch this summer.
It's one fight. Interested to see how Pleiss does compared to their first pick.
He could sit on the bench in Europe and get paid more.
He can? :confusedshrug:
But he'd need to have a big summer league for that to even be on the table.
What if he sucks and has a big fall camp? I'm sure it's already on the table.
the last THREE second rounders were duds (Diez, Hanlan, and Stokes) . . . then ONE of these three guys should be a rotation guy, right? RIGHT? (Note: probability does not yield certainty.)
One still could be. Two of them were traded. Duds? One is back this year. Dud? :wtf:
I would love to see him make the team.
Make the team or be given a spot on the team just because? :confusedshrug:
it's fair to say that he's a very real prospect for the Jazz at #60. Just maybe not this season, but perhaps down the road.
Not hard to imagine him taking Johnson's spot if he shows something. A corner 3 away from being someone.

Mack should be. He earned it. The job should be taken from him.

http://www.slcdunk.com/the-downbeat/2016/6/27/12040098/nba-draft-2016-utah-jazz-forward-joel-bolomboy-downbeat
When you directly compare him to Trey Lyles, who is younger by two years, who has a much more robust offensive game (not just shooting range or runners or passing) it's clear why one was a lottery pick and the other a 2nd rounder after four years of college play.
Playing 4 years is one reason he wasn't picked higher.
Trey Lyles (2nd string power forward, can fill in at small forward and center depending on injuries)
Played 3 in college. Doesn't mean he can play it here.
Jeff Withey (3rd string center)
joke! :facepalm
If Bolomboy makes the team he is pretty much only over Pleiss in the depth chart.
Could be ahead of Withey who they don't like. Hard to put him above Pleiss since Pleiss has already shown something above the Big Sky.
Bolomboy making the team only exists in a world where he plays really well in summer league and training camp, *and* the team doesn't add any other bigmen in NBA Free Agency. There's a chance to upgrade this roster in July. An actual stretch big at power forward (if the team can get one) shakes things up a bit and drops Joel down to 4th string power forward, and likely out of the NBA. Of course, the team is more likely to make a trade or two that involves free agency, and not sign a guy outright. As a result, Joel may make the team if other guys are traded away . . . or he, himself, may be traded.
Easy to see him on the team if he plays well in summer league. They have plenty of roster spots to be had and money to be given out.
I believe that Trevor Booker may be able to get a big raise this off-season, and if that was to happen it's likely that it wouldn't be with the Jazz.
front loaded
Depending on what the roster looks like there could be about 5 to 10 minutes available for a 2nd round rookie.
D-league to start.

Yeah let's get rid of a couple of our best players just because! :coleman:
