Mike Conley left shootaround on Wednesday morning a sixth man. And then he went and took his routine afternoon nap. He woke up a starter once again, his name a popular search on Twitter and social media.

It was a move first reported by The Athletic. Head coach Quin Snyder inserted Royce O’Neale back into the starting group, while notifying Conley he would take on a bench role. A few hours later, it was Joe Ingles who went to the bench, with Conley remaining the starter. The moves made for a long day for everyone involved. And then a defeat that dropped them into the sixth spot in the Western Conference made for a long night. “I was told I was coming off the bench, and I took a nap and woke up and I was starting,” Conley said. “It just happened that way. We have to take more advantage of our transition chances. We have to avoid having the basketball stick.”

First, Hod Rod Hundley, who even was the team’s radio voice way back then, had a catchphrase for him which was apparently “A.J. from the parking lot!” It wass to the point where it’s still James’ nickname.

He used from the parking lot later. Probably another one he took from Chick?
Donovan Mitchell has played 2.6 seasons and is already even with Memo Okur — actually legitimately a notorious 3-point shooter for seven seasons — in 3-point shots. The game has changed. Mitchell has a couple of other milestones coming up: on Monday, he’ll tie Jarron Collins for games started for the Jazz with 203 — a good reminder of just how many games Collins somehow started during his Jazz career. Next week, he should also surpass Bryon Russell for 20th on the Jazz’s All-Time assists list.

The root of it all comes from the miscalculations of the front office and an inability of the coaching staff to make this work this far into the season. The front office put the team into this position. They’re the ones who gave up the assets they did to trade for Mike Conley. Donovan Mitchell grabbed nine from the back court, while Bogdanovic and Royce O’Neale had seven apiece. Tony Bradley chipped in six in just 14 minutes. It was a team effort.
He got better at distributing the ball, developed a smarter shot selection, and defending. He still kept his smooth ball handling skills and sweet jumper. Now that Clarkson’s made himself a Sixth Man of the Year candidate on a playoff team in Utah, he could be in for a huge pay day this summer.Doesn't defend or even look to pass. Might have to let him go. They need a starting PF which will improve their bench with Ingles and O'Neale on it

He’s outperformed the expectation set by that small contract, and accomplished what he came here to do. He’s developed his game and basketball I.Q under one of the best minds in basketball, and proved to be ready when his number is called.
As soon as he’s through with the Jazz’s playoff run this spring, Mudiay should look for a bigger opportunity. There’s a small chance that opportunity opens up right here in Utah if the Jazz and Mike Conley part ways.
or if they part ways with Clarkson. Cheaper option. More upside. Only problem is they are limited on what they can pay him I believe because he's on a minimum deal. Wright-Forman also has 6th man potential and could need a roster spot as well.
The Jazz can find a way to tie up loose ends on the roster through the NBA draft (they likely get their own first round pick), G-League (Jarrell Brantley has been tearing it up), and by shopping around role players like Ed Davis and Georges Niang.

Davis has to go obviously. Rather he's somehow dealt or they spread his contract out over several years which isn't ideal with Bobert and Mitchell about to be paid. Niang probably isn't going anywhere. Non guaranteed deal. They have to look center in the draft with both Gobert and Bradley going into contract years. Wouldn't count on whoever it is helping them right away though. Could be a player to stash. Have to get a vet center to go with their young bigs.
a new coach might be the first thing to do though?

Some were worried it would be an overpaid contract, but so far Bogey’s arguably been the best bargain of the 2019 free agency class.
their D might argue otherwise
This ought to be a no-brainer for Conley, as he has struggled this season and looks like he’s fallen off a cliff. There’s no way he will make anything close to 34.5 million dollars if he signs a new deal on the 2020 market.
we've seen guys give up the one year for multi year security before but hard to imagine it here
He makes an undersized backcourt with Donovan Mitchell, and gets confused too often on defense for whom he’s supposed to guard. He over helps on the interior rather than trusting Rudy to erase mistakes, and he gets confused on switches.
I think that's overplayed. Both have length. Mitchell has size. The league plays smaller
So even when Conley’s shot has been falling this season, he’s not contributing anything more than volume scoring. Pretty redundant for a club that already has Jordan Clarkson filling the same role at less than half the cost of Conley.
Come one now! He's still a better playmaker and defender than Clarkson but who isn't?
In my opinion the Jazz should look to deal Conley as a salary dump should he opt-in to his 34.5 million. I’d love to see it, but will they be able to find a worthwhile deal for the 34 year old veteran? They may be stuck with him until 2021.
Don't think it necessarily has to be a salary dump. Another team might be in a similar situation with another player. Conley is far from their biggest problem though. I'd be looking closely at the whole roster outside of Gobert. They have to get better defensively somehow while not losing the spacing they've long needed around him.

There simply isn’t a reason to challenge this call, even if you believe Ojeleye was late in establishing position for the charge: it’s a low-leverage situation, and block/charge calls need to be horrifyingly obvious for the call to be overturned.
With Rudy, Donovan and Bojan all earning a +/- of -20 tonight, it is easy to say that we were bailed out by the bench. This will happen on occasion, and it is not the end of the world. BUT, this team is built on the backs of our stars. More often than not, an 11-point game on 20% shooting from the field for Donovan, paired with a 9/7reb/3blk game from Rudy, and sprinkling in some poor shooting from Bogey would be the perfect recipe for a loss. Conley can’t bail out all three of them on a nightly basis. We need them to play well against the better teams in this league, especially those +.500 teams who have the capability to play 5-out.

He is skilled in so many different ways, you can no longer simply deny one thing and take away half of his game plan. Because of his flexibility, this opens up options for teammates.

Gobert reminds me of AK
Snyder had some good, albeit late imo, in-game adjustments. He sat Bogie for stretches and pulled guys at the 7-minute mark in the third rather than riding or dying with his normal rotation. I’d like to see more from him where he sits dudes for shitting the bed defensively or just recognizing that guys aren’t hitting shots and maybe it’d be good to play a guy who might make a shot.
-The Ingles/Conley/Clarkson/Minivan/Foul Machine bench lineup could be a lot of fun. If Niang doesn’t get murdered on defense, Bradley doesn’t pick up five fouls in eight or nine minutes, and CIC can figure out a way to share the ball-handling/scoring duties in a way where all three can find/have a rhythm, that lineup can be dangerous to opposing team’s benches. We won the game last night because of that lineup.
Overall, a solid win with some U.G.L.Y. play from Mitchell and Bogie. It was great to watch a defensive game for once and see the Jazz keep a team below 100, which used to be a staple of Gobert teams. Four in a row with the Pistons tonight. Good opportunity to build some momentum with some tough games coming up (Memphis, Toronto, LAL (2x), Spurs (2x), Pellies, Thunder and Mavs over the next 9 before ATL).

Need a 5. None of the 10 fills that need. Bradley and Rudy will be free agents after next year. Behind them is Davis and two mostly unproven small ball 5's. Have young prospects everywhere but a big 5. Trade up or down or out if you can't get one.
Donovan Mitchell vs. Luka Doncic would be one of the most exciting matchups of the postseason, as both young stars are primarily responsible for their teams’ success. If these two teams played each other a year from now, the Jazz wouldn’t want anything to do with the Mavericks. This will be Doncic’s first time in the postseason, though, so the matchup is tolerable.

The veteran point guard had just dropped 25 points and dished out five assists to lead the Utah Jazz to an impressive 99-94 road win over the Boston Celtics. The performance didn’t leave much for Conley’s doubters to talk about, so Mitchell and his teammates took it upon themselves to fill the silence inside the visitors’ locker room at TD Garden. Friday, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the league sent a memo to teams to begin preparation to play in arenas without fans and only with essential personnel present. This was the latest, most drastic step. They have already sent instructions about which quotidian precautions to take, and players have tried to follow suit and follow along. Each, though, has their thoughts on how cautious they should be. Re: 2019-20 season - Been waiting two decades for this one!
The NBA is a touchy sport. Teammates share elaborate handshakes. Players dap and fist bump and sometimes trade jerseys. They give fans autographs using their markers. Hugs are a constant. It’s not unusual for players to enter and leave the court through a tunnel draped by fans with their arms extended, all looking for some kind of physical and personal contact. Re: 2019-20 season - Been waiting two decades for this one!
-Some terrible mental defensive lapses on the perimeter in this game. At the end of the first, I think, we weren’t paying attention to the two-for-one and gave up a three, which happened again in the second quarter. When you figure in a Kyle Lowry bomb at the end of the shot clock in the fourth, those nine points are the game. Guys need to pay attention to clock and situation. Every team shoots those threes with any airspace.
-There was a real hesitation to attack the length and athleticism of the Raptors. Multiple times in transition we didn’t even attempt the shot, like when Conley got the steal and had Siakam behind him, or when Jordan Clarkson attacked a weak Susie closeout from a four-foul Siakam and then botched the layup with Pascal semi-closing space behind him, or when Bogie went for some weak sauce, two-footed layup for no reason and wanted the refs to bail him out with a foul on a two-on-one fast break. Plus, you figure some bad luck with finishing in the paint from several Jazz players and we left at least 12-14 points at the rim tonight.
Even worse was them going back to the floaters that killed them to start the year
-Great defensive and offensive games from Joe and Royce. These two are the key to us winning a playoff series because of their defense.
-A lot of missed open threes that could have swung this game.
-Donovan was straight MIA for this one. He seemed to be feasting when ASB ended and the rest of the team was still in the Caribbean or Mexico. Now he’s deferring, not being aggressive, and putting up some stinkers. When he’s not really attacking the rim hard, he’s taking away some of our Rudy advantage. Teams don’t want to come help off of Rudy because it leaves the rim open to offensive rebounds and they don’t want to send the secondary wave of help from the corners either. When he’s deferring, he’s helping out the defense.
-Bogie and Clarkson with some MIA games as well.
Overall, this was a great game defensively from the Jazz. I’m not worried about the offense. Had we been aggressive in some spots, I think we win this game. You sky-falling people need to check yourself. A week ago it was the defense you were worried about. It’s picked up significantly and looks to be really encouraging, actually. The offense put up a stinker which is an outlier for this team, and Toronto is really good.
Why I was frustrated when twice Q just didn’t roll with the bench longer in both halves when they were playing well. Let’s use our depth at altitude against a team on a b2b.
I’m not an advocate of load management as practiced by Kawhi but when there are clear examples where it can be done in game just based on production and energy Q should take advantage. He doesn’t have to worry about chemistry or egos, etc as players clearly know their roles.
