After fielding one of the deepest teams in the NBA over the past couple of seasons, the Jazz bench has become thin this year and a bit of a liability, forcing the Jazz coach to play his main guys longer minutes and having fewer options to turn to when the starters are struggling.
The only years they've been deep probably in their history was the couple non tanking ones with Corbin. Big reason they were in the playoff hunt at all with those teams
Last year three more Jazz players averaged more than 20 minutes per game
Juwan Morgan signed and Kidd released
Morgan was signed to multi year deal, probably similar to Royce. He was the best player on the Stars, and can play several roles.
Doubt we see him much this year but the Jazz liked him enough to spend more money. He was really fun to watch in Summer League, as he just worked harder than everyone else. He seemed really nervous when I watched him, and is doing much better in the G League

Multi year deal means this year is probably guaranteed. I thought he looked good in fall camp and with the Stars. He might play instead of Green at the 4 I'm guessing? So their only flexibility now is cutting Niang or packaging their deadweight in a trade? Need to at least have flexibility for buyouts:wtf:
Not sure how signing a 6'8" guy is going to help our backup C problem.

center is where they had him in preseason and with the Stars, Must be long? He's got a solid build
I posted earlier about how much we obviously miss Ed Davis, wanted to dive into the rebounding numbers a bit mroe
Bench rebounding with Ed:
1: OKC – 16, UTA – 15
2: LAL – 15, UTA – 16
3: SAC – 16, UTA – 25
4: PHX – 20, UTA – 18
5: LAC – 18, UTA – 15
6: SAC – 14, UTA – 3 (Ed played 7:46 before injury)
Bench rebounding without Ed:
1: LAC – 27, UTA – 11
2: PHI – 10, UTA – 13
3: MIL – 17, UTA – 15
4: GSW – 16, UTA – 14
5: BRK – 21, UTA – 16
6: MEM – 15, UTA – 6
7: MIN – 22, UTA – 13
8: MIN – 21, UTA – 13
So.. yeah. Those numbers tell a bit of a story. Rebounding isn’t even the only area where Ed >>> Tony/Jeff. I don’t think anyone needs to wonder "what’s up with our bench".

He gets his hand on almost every board so not surprising
This is why Davis needed to be much higher than Green in our preseason list
We don’t have a replacement for him. The plan is pretty much for Davis and Gobert to be healthy all the time.

which was ridiculous for no other reason than just so Bradley could play in the Gleague. I'm guessing Bradley might get some run with the Stars now that they signed Morgan but they both need to be down there
No where near a capable #3 Center, (Udoh wasn’t either) and no plans to get one!
Bradley hasn’t got it but they still hope.
Dumb contracts like Exum 9m for an unproven player, always thought it was stupid. Joe I. extension, why?
It seem to me the FO/Organization are too loyal to the detriment of the "Contention Potential".
Look at how the Patriots use and reload their players, even some highly effective ones are let go to pick up new talent.
I think the Jazz hold on AND over pay players too often. (Exum, Favors, Ingles were/are all overpays IMO)
Posted by AdMan59 on Nov 21, 2019 | 5:11 PM
Udoh certainly was and Bradley is still the youngest guy on the team. Exum getting paid when he'd done nothing was a joke. Joe's extension after an off year isn't looking good right now. But typical Jazz moves all the way around. Been doing it for 4 decades now
Exum on the other hand has been a mistake and there is no other way to look at it. If they wanted to re-sign him when they did, they could have offered him half of what they did and still he would have signed, he wasn’t going anywhere else and if he did, well so be it. That was not a good decision. Hopefully he comes good at some point but it’s hard to argue, even if he does, that it was a good decision and represented value. Unless by some miracle he improves massively and becomes like a critical 6th man on a Jazz championship team and hits a game/series defining shot or something, which is absolute fantasy land at this point.

Exum shouldn't have gotten more than 1 guaranteed year. Would have come off the books with everyone else this past summer. Especially when I didn't get the impression that any other team was bidding for his services. The Jazz bid against themselves for him and Favors it seemed?
Speaking of Alec Burks, at least the former Jazz fan favorite is getting a run as the starting shooting guard, filling up the box score with 14.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. After being traded for Kyle Korver, Burks has bounced around the league from Cleveland to Sacramento to signing with the Thunder this offseason, only to take back his commitment after the Paul George trade and sign for the vet minimum with Golden State.

Imagine Burks, Thabo, Udoh and Neto on the bench! :rant
NBA teams are always built around a core of a star player or two, and sometimes the head coach. The Utah Jazz are no different, having built around center Rudy Gobert ever since he broke out during his sophomore campaign.

They haven't really built around him until this year though
The NBA's addition of two-way contracts has had a number of unintended consequences, perhaps most notably the decreased number of viable players available for teams to sign during the season.
shouldn't need to sign as many guys since you have more available on your roster though
"One of the reasons why there's not that many options is even if they wanted to go get a young player, if they don't have him on their roster, there's only a handful of guys that aren't on Two-Way contracts that are NBA-ready, according to people I've talked to. I understand the desperation," added Windhorst.

there are lost of proven vets available
On Thursday, the Jazz announced they had signed Morgan to a deal, which NBA scribe Keith Smith is reporting as a two-year, non-guaranteed pact. To make room on the 15-man roster for Morgan, the team has waived forward Stanton Kidd.
good. at least keep some flexibility please
Morgan has been involved with the Jazz organization since the summer; after going undrafted in June, he caught on with the team ahead of summer league play. The 6-foot-8, 232-pound forward can play the three and the four (perhaps even the five in a small-ball setting) and has a reputation as a good defender, rebounder and a hard worker.
Once again at least do your homework. He signed immediately after the draft. Sounds like they like him about as much as their 3 picks. He also played nothing but center in pre season and starts at the 5 for the Stars

They didn't make the right move keeping him and Kanter over Millsap though :rant
