Should've been Barons.
I don't like the name. It's too generic. Reminds me of a junior high school team rather than a professional sports franchise. Just my thoughts.
should be Outlaws or Bandits with a basketball wearing a hat and bandana
I also like cyclones. Could have done a swirl or something interesting.
I can hear it already:
Thunder, thunder, thunder, thunder
I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track
I looked round
And I knew there was no turning back
My mind raced
And I thought what could I do
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you
Sound of the drums
Beating in my heart
The thunder of guns
Tore me apart
You've been
Thunderstruck
Rode down the highway
Broke the limit, we hit the ton
Went through to Texas, yeah Texas, and we had some fun
We met some girls
Some dancers who gave a good time
Broke all the rules
Played all the fools
Yeah yeah they, they, they blew our minds
And I was shaking at the knees
Could I come again please
Yeah them ladies were too kind
You've been
Thunderstruck
I was shaking at the knees
Could I come again please
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
It's alright, we're doin' fine
It's alright, we're doin' fine, fine, fine
Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, baby, baby
Thunderstruck, you've been Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
You've been Thunderstruck
One of my favorite ACDC songs

Thunder at least has some manlyness to it....
like the name....hate the logo
I actually agree with this...
The problem is not really the sound of the word "thunder," but how you can use the word in a logo. It sure as hell is not as logo friendly as Timberwolves.
Here is the Knicks (Knickerbockers) logo evolution. The dribbling Knickerbocker was a bit corny, but might have seemed suitable at the time. However, they eventually decided to completely get rid of the historical figure logo, and even change the name- Knickerbockers to Knicks- of the team.
This is a line drawing of their original logo (I think the colors were similar to what they use today.)- which was used from 1946-1964:

This was the one used for about 30 years- 1964-1992 (the logo I first saw when rooting for the Knicks in the 60's):
And this is the one most of you know:

So the Knicks franchise shortened their name, dumped the guy, featured (enlarged) the basketball, and then came up with a more "modern" look beginning in the 1990's.
I suppose that the Thunder can do something like this over time but you have to wonder why they did not come up with a more "user friendly" name than "Thunder," and why their original logo showed so little creativity.
Horrible name.
Thunder - A loud noise that does nothing.
Sounds like a WNBA or Minor League Baseball team.
they should have zeus as there maskot running around throwing thunder bolts
I personally can't stand it. But, that's because I'm from Portland, and we had it first...

Winnipeg Thunder
One reason Thunder sounds dumb is because of how awkward it is when people refer to the teammates in a plural sense.
Heck, even NBA.com says "Thunder are ready to roar in OKC."
sounds like a made up team name from a movie or something, maybe even a minor league team name. ranks right up the stink-o meter w/ "bobcats".
what about other singular names in nba: heat , magic, jazz.
this name reminds me of the wnba
for reals
They're named after a sound. C'mon!!! At least jazz music has different styles - and when the team was originally given the name, it had something to do with the city.
Thunder could not be anymore generic, universal, or unspecific to Oklahoma City.
Shoulda gone with the [Durant's] Posse.
