Re: better dunker at age 34. Kobe or Jordan?
Doesn't mean much. Jordan's miles were MUCH harder as he busted his a** on both sides of the court every time he played; in practice, games, etc. He also drove MUCH more ferociously to the hole. Ask DWade and DRose how that affects your longevity.
I always got the feeling Kobe didn't have to work as hard, w/ Shaq and the big men he always had, where I always felt Jordan gave everything he had on the court and had to, to win pre-93 and especially pre-91.
Also, you don't think Jordan was busting it on the court everyday from 18-21 before he got in the NBA. He was going at people like Worthy, Perkins, etc. left and right every day. People seem to think wear and tear only happens in "the minutes of the games". Intense pickup games all day are gonna take more out of you than playing 35 minutes with breaks, etc. in a controlled situation. Anyone who's played ball all day at the park, in the gym, etc. knows what I mean.
Don't get me wrong, love Kobe, but Jordan's body took WAY more abuse per game, and every time he played.
oh ****ing come the **** on lol
i mean yeah jordans a slightly better defender. but kobe did garner an all time record 9 first team all defensive awards, and 12 all defensive teams overall
and kobe is also known as one of the hardest workers and gym rats in sports history
you friggin slimeball
get off your high horse
i'm sure jordan didn't put 4 more years worth of mileage on his legs from just playing slightly better defense
i'm positive kobe spent more hours in the gym practicing aswell
gtfo ya bum

Re: better dunker at age 34. Kobe or Jordan?
Kobe played with Shaq which made his life easier and added more mileage on his legs.
While MJ had to carry and entire team since day 1 and play in a more physical era.
Not only was MJ a superior defender, he didn't take plays off on defense. On top of that, players didn't stand around and dribble the ball all day, so he had to run around all day and chase his man through screens.
We've already heard Kobe say how hard Rip and Reggie were to guard. Imagine having to guard players that were always moving every single game?
Teams would purposely make MJ work hard on defense to tire him out on offense, that was their best defense against MJ in many cases. Kobe takes far too many plays off on defense, and always had Shaq to back him up during his early seasons.
Re: better dunker at age 34. Kobe or Jordan?
Btw...
MJ is the better dunker at every stage.
Re: better dunker at age 34. Kobe or Jordan?
lol kobe by age 34 played 45,390 season minutes, 8,641 playoff minutes
combined 54,031
by age 34 jordan played 35,887 season minutes, 7,474 playoff minutes
combined 43,361
kobe played 10,670 more minutes than jordan by the same age
the average season kobe plays 2700 minutes
10,670 divided by 2700 equals 3.95 years
meaning kobe had an extra 4 years worth of mileage on his legs
and even with all that extra mileage. he was still throwing down dunks better than most rookies
add the minutes he played in college too
Re: better dunker at age 34. Kobe or Jordan?
Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant have different types of dunk styles. Jordan's huge hands allow for a lot more dunks, period, but the flushes like the one on Mutombo tend to feature less wind-up and arm-based authority (since it's just his palming hand flipping it down, more or less). Of the two links in the original post, I prefer the Kobe finish.
That said, I think it'd be more accurate (and interesting) if we compared each player's full season dunk clips for their 34th year of age. When Jordan opted to not go the one-footed super palm route, I felt his style and authority were both pretty legit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YR8VM270Zw#t=2m21s
Another I really liked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZdNhE0AgrI#t=2m38s
Re: better dunker at age 34. Kobe or Jordan?
Kobe looks like he's just getting any lift, he's not as explosive.
Meanwhile, MJ is still gliding smoothly, shifting his body in the air while pumping the ball to avoid defenders.
Pause at 0:16. Those are some big ass hands.

his hand, wtf.
Re: better dunker at age 34. Kobe or Jordan?
I think what people miss out here is that Kobe has more flair as a dunker than MJ, he looks much smoother on his dunks (at least as KB24) to me, but MJ has always been a considerably better leaper, plus his huge hands allow him to do stuff Kobe was never able to (Kobe can't palm a basketball as well as Mike).
Re: better dunker at age 34. Kobe or Jordan?
Jordan was flashier early in his career. At some point he just switched to efficiency. He just puts the ball through the cylinder as quickly as possible. In the process he will angle and contort his body as required and also elevate as required....no matter what the defense. Sheer beauty and force.
Re: better dunker at age 34. Kobe or Jordan?
Kobe's dunk against the Nets is one of my favorite dunks of all time
