At first I agreed with that but now I see otherwise
Melo already showed he could play well with Billups, and while his style of play became more individualistic later in his career it stands to reason that you may have seen him prioritize different things if he were put in such a good situation, especially on a team like Detroit that prioritized it. They would probably still get Prince anyway, remember they chose Darko instead of Melo.
I think Melo could've actually helped them win more than 1 championship because he continued getting better and better during the periods where they got older and worse. Probably would've been a good counter for them in 07 when they lost Ben and the Cavs beat them. Melo was putting up 29ppg that season on decent efficiency
