a move like this for a young vet might make sense if they don't think Udoka's ankle can hold up or Kessler isn't ready for the NBA. Otherwise I'd be going into the season with those two getting the center minutes with a vet to school them along the way
Donovan Mitchell is one of the flashiest players in the league, so pairing him with an athletic forward who can get above the rim would put Utah on ESPN every night. Take note. Re: 2022 off season Post Gobert. A new era begins
My pal Brian Windhorst became the darling of NBA Twitter on Friday for his dramatic burst of morning prognostication mere hours before Utah traded Rudy Gobert to Minnesota. Yet I suspect that Windy, when he was musing so irresistibly about the intrigue building in Salt Lake City, was thinking as much about the prospect of Donovan Mitchell landing in Brooklyn as part of a three-way deal sending Durant to the Suns as he was about what might happen with Gobert.
– via Marc Stein @ marcstein.substack.com
That’s because, on the surface, Mitchell appears to be precisely the sort of star that would appeal to the Nets as their part of their Durant surrender. Mitchell is a face of the franchise-level player with ties to New York. The Nets just acquired Royce O’Neale, his favorite teammate in Utah not named Eric Paschall. Launching a retooling around Mitchell, who has been coveted by the crosstown Knicks for years, makes so much sense for Brooklyn.
– via Marc Stein @ marcstein.substack.com
The problem is that Mitchell is unavailable to the Nets for the same primary reason as many top young stars: Brooklyn is ineligible to trade for Mitchell as long as Ben Simmons is on the roster. League rules preclude one team from employing two players on “designated rookie” contracts acquired via trade. Another considerable obstacle: Utah, for now, has been adamant that it won’t trade Mitchell. One nonetheless suspects that the Jazz, for all their messaging about wanting to reload around Mitchell, would eventually be willing to trade Mitchell in the proverbial “right” deal if the Nets suddenly no longer had Simmons (or were shipping him out in the same trade). Something to file away if a multi-team Durant deal doesn’t materialize immediately.

https://thejnotes.com/2022/07/05/3-takeaways-from-the-first-utah-jazz-summer-league-game/2/
Unfortunately, while Butler wasn’t overly terrible, it just felt like the offense wasn’t clicking together, and it may be the first game of Summer League, but the hope was that Butler with plenty of NBA experience could lead this team in game 1. The Thunder were led by 2021/22 rookie sensation Josh Giddey and Chet Holmgren, and look much more fluent and organized, once again showing there’s a clear lack of overall talent on this Jazz Summer League roster.
they don't really have an offense or a defense so it's probably a bit tougher than OKC sending in most of the regular season roster
It’s been well-documented that the Utah Jazz didn’t get themselves any high end talent in this years draft, and in the first Summer League game of the year, it was very apparent that they didn’t have anyone that could stand out and take over a game the way that Holmgren did for the OKC Thunder.
we don't know really know what they got in the draft yet. Let's see him play first eh?
One big reason for this could be the fact that Johnny Juzang, the big name UDFA didn’t play due to a car crash recently that may hold him out for the entirety of SLC Summer League, but the team was also missing Leondro Bolmaro and Walker Kessler, two names acquired in the Rudy Gobert trade that could have made a big impact in this game. Kofi Cockburn wasn’t anywhere near effective enough when guarding Holmgren, and didn’t make any type of impact until late in the game, and one of the only players who flashed any sort of potential was Xavier Sneed.
they also didn't play some guys that might have helped like a former lottery pick

I get the uneasy feeling that they might go into the season with a veteran line-up and give Mitchell a chance to show that he can lead them. When it fails Ainge will sell everyone off and it will look more like this with whatever they get in return.
[h=5]Point Guard: Mitchell, Jared Butler[/h][h=5]Shooting Guard: Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Juang has a two way[/h][h=5]Small Forward: Leandro Bolmaro[/h][h=5]Power Forward: Jarred Vanderbilt[/h][h=5]Center: Udoka Azubike, Walker Kessler[/h]
Keep in mind that the Jazz have time to add players, which they will desperately need to do. Jarred Vanderbilt only became a starter last season, and he did not show out for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Udoka Azubike is by no means a starting center in the NBA, but he is technically the only center the Jazz have under contract. Depending on how the Summer League goes, Cockburn and Fall might arrive at the party.
Vanderbilt is probably now the best rebounder on the team. Looking at his stats I'd say he's an energy guy, rebounder, defender? Shoing out yes? Udoka actually looked good starting last year. Certainly good enough for a tanking team.
The backcourt is in good hands. Between Mitchell, Clarkson, and Beasly, the Jazz might have the best shooting guard core in the league. I placed Mike Conely behind Patrick Beverly for purely defensive reasons. If they both remain on the roster, I expect them to split minutes.
they at least have two of the biggest gunners and worst defenders at guard. Doubt Conley will be around. Beverley shouldn't either. Mitchell is the pg supposedly. Butler should get a shot to back him up
The frontcourt is where work needs to be done. Between the power forward and center positions, Rudy Gay is the only player who has ever been a quality starter, and that was back in 2017.
depends on what you consider quality. Vanderbilt would be considered quality in a different era for sure.

The 6’5″, 215 pounder played four years at Kansas State, and it was his final season, in which he averaged 14 points and 5 rebounds a game that got him attention, and with consistent playing time, it’s believed he can replicate those type of numbers at the next level.

Re: 2022 off season Post Gobert. A new era begins
better match up tonite. The guys that did well for the Jazz had a ton of turnovers. Caboclo could be a good 3rd center if they go with Udoka and Kessler. Young vet. Still only 26. He looked good except for the turnovers. His wingspan is only a couple inches less than Rudy's! Of course the crowd was chanting for Tacko while Cabolclo was going to work :facepalm

Re: 2022 off season Post Gobert. A new era begins
Watching a Utah based sports talk show where they've said the Bulls and Jazz had a deal in place for Gobert until the KD news came out and the Bulls pulled out.
Deal was
Gobert
For
Vucevic
Williams
White
3 1st round picks
I know they ended up getting a ton of picks from the T'Wolves, but all the talk was the Bulls wouldn't even trade Vuc and Williams for Gobert, so not sure how the 3 1sts got added too.
