Alright. Just thought it would be something to consider before growing a rat's nest on your head. My buddy tried it and looked like a hippy stoner. He ended up shaving them off because they gave people the wrong impression, and they started itching like a bastard.
It sounds like your son and girlfriend both had their hair sectioned off and backcombed into dreads. That is one way to get dreadlocks, but true dreads are grown not made. I want my hair to do whatever it wants to do, I don't like the sectioned look where you can tell their not natural. But to each his own, I hope to have natural locks one day.
I don't understand what you mean by "natural"? Please explain that to me. Both of them appear to be very "natural" to me. I honestly don't believe that just not combing your hair is considered "dreads" but as you said to each his own.
What does "backcombed" mean?

Everyone's hair would naturally knot and form dreadlocks over time if they just let it happen."Natural" dreadlocks are ones that you didn't really do anything to get them, this does NOT mean that you don't wash your hair and just let it look like crap though. CLEAN hair knots faster and your supposed to wash at least twice a week or more. All you do for natural dreads is never brush your hair or run your fingers through it and wash with a residue-free organic soap(like Dr.Bronners),thats it and you just let your hair form how it wants to without forcing the idea of dreads upon it.
Backcombing is when you MAKE your hair into dreadlocks. You section off the hair, usually in about 1inch by 1inch squares and then you backcomb the hair towards the scalp forcing it to knot up. If your hair is long enough it will look like dreads right after you do this but they do take time to mature.
But by doing this your completely taking away any chance of your hair having a unique natural look. Dreadlocks take time to grow and no products need to be used.

ewwww...
We were meant to have dreadlocks.
I saw a guy/girl (couldn't tell) that had dreads the other day. It looked horrible. Guess they're not my thing.

they were probably backcombed and heavily waxed, hopefully next time you see some mature natural dreads, they are an amazing sight to behold :)

semi-agree
if you MAKE your hair into dreads its gonna be hit or miss
but if you GROW them you cant go wrong
Natural Dreadlocks
1. Throw away the comb
2. Wash with residue-free soap
3. Don't run your fingers through your hair
4. Time
That's all it takes, no matter what kind of hair you have. If you want, I think it helps to rub your head in circles a little/twist and wear a wool tam.
This thread resurfaces on page one every other day some how.
I live in an area with a crap load of rastas and jamaicans, and it only looks good on the badass types or the old geezers, if you're a tubby whitey I don't think dreads would be the best hairstyle for you.

I'm a blonde haired,blue-eyed,athletic,laid-back,drug-free,alcohol-free, ultimate frisbee playing college baller. I'll be alright.
Depending on hair type it usually takes 9-12 months for it to lock up.

hi enayes, i like it when people are really in-tune with nature. there was a stage in my adolescent where i was trying to be as natural as possible. taking showers every other day with herbal essence shampoo and using vinegar as soap. uh not eating any packaged or processed foods whatsoever. staying outside for quite a while. sleeping on the floor or the rooftop of my house and wearing really simple black clothing.
it actually did wonders for the personailty and soul. i commend u on ur journey for the dreadlocks. my hair sucks lol. nappy and mad voluminous

Thanks man, I try to eat healthy too and I love being outside. But I don't take it too far. Hopefully I do end up with dreads one day, I appreciate the support.
For anyone who has dreads, please feel free to post your pic here.
My hair is starting to knot a little bit, but it is still really early.

you know if you wanted to do it faster all u have to do is buy snythetic dreadlocks, its pretty much a deadlock hairs extention weave thing, like what black girls use for they hair, but its like dreadlocks and you can get them as long as you want, but u prolly want to go to a hair dresser that does that type of stuff.
PS. about 80% of college and NFL players use synethic dreadlocks so its not uncommon just this year everybody started doing it and they were all as long as lil wayne and that takes literally like 5-10years to get dreadlocks that long not 5 months.

I would never even consider getting FAKE dreads, I am looking forward to the lifelong journey towards natural dreadlocks.

Those are not my dreads. I was just posting them for you guys to see. I am currently trying to grow dreads naturally.
All hair wants to knot, why prevent it from doing what it wants to do?

I think anybody who isn't a Rasta or not of African decsent and has locks is fronting.
I think anybody who isn't a Rasta or not of African decsent and has locks is fronting.
That's a very ignorant comment. White people were the first to have dreadlocks. I'll admit that "making" your hair into dreads is "fronting", but if you just let nature take its course, what can be wrong with that?
Yes.
Dirty and unprofessional. Once my hair gets long I put it immediately into rows or shave it all.
