Re: Broussard: Brandon Roy retiring for medical reasons
For every great player who succeeds in the league, there will be some other player's misfortune as such as B Roy's injuries to give more spotlight to the successful injury free players.
Did that make sense? :wtf: ^^:confusedshrug:
Let me try again....
Injuries to players like B Roy, T Mac, etc... make it easy for the Kobes, LeBrons, and the Dwades to succeed with less fierce competition (whether for individual title of best player or winning rings)...

It's sad to add Brandon Roy to that "could have been" list.
After today we have to put him in that same list as Penny, Grant Hill and others who were injured during the primes of their careers. A healthy Roy had the potential to be the best shooting guard in the league by this point.

Re: Broussard: Brandon Roy retiring for medical reasons
 Maaan this is just horrible. Such a prospect that had so much heart in him and loved the game.
I'll miss these moments:

So you tell me I'm wrong and this decision had nothing to do with his retirement?

That's all speculation. Considering the circumstances it's a dick move to blame the player for the injury. He may have pushed it a bit but so do all star athletes. Not to mention it's insensitive because Blazers fans are obviously devastated by the news.

fvck that sucks one of my favs

Re: Broussard: Brandon Roy retiring for medical reasons
Just saw this 5 minutes ago on ESPN and I really cannot believe it. Grew up around this guy. Watched him play since he was like 14. He is easily the most talented player to ever come out of Washington and definitely the best out of Seattle overall. Lost my team a few years ago and now we lose a real hometown hero.....and he's literally in the prime of his career. Shit is the definition of ****ed up. Glad I got to see him play while he was in his "prime". Ughh man this is horrible.

Re: It's sad to add Brandon Roy to that "could have been" list.
I don't think Brandon Roy had the potential to be better than DWade. He wasn't anywhere near hall of fame. The man was good and it's sad to see him go, but everybody will forget soon enough.

Re: It's sad to add Brandon Roy to that "could have been" list.
You needed to make a new thread for this? Couldn't put this profound thought in the retirement thread?
-
Re: Broussard: Brandon Roy retiring for medical reasons
Noooo!
I'm sure he could of still been a valuable asset to a lot of teams.
-
Re: Broussard: Brandon Roy retiring for medical reasons
I still have hope like I still have hope for yao. Never say never!
Although my hope could be better served if I knew he would be going to phoenix in a few years

I just state my opinion here and therefor I don't care about insensitivity to any fans. It's not like I talk about the relatives of some people here or something. It's not all speculation, come on, the doctors said before he played that there is a possibility he could never play at his current level again. If it wouldn't have been this drastic, I wouldn't have remembered it.
So he decided to play in a somewhat meaningless postseason (because the Blazers weren't going anywhere) to put his career as a star player (and like we know now, his whole career) into jeopardy. It's really a shame because I also think he was a great player but this happens to guys who have done a much less stupid decision and who only had bad luck. I'm not saying Roy didn't have bad luck but he could've done something against what happened.

Brandon Roy is the type of player who could have been a 8-10 time All Star. Sad news

Re: It's sad to add Brandon Roy to that "could have been" list.
I just feel bad for Roy and the Blazers. By now that team should have been close to becoming a possible dynasty with Roy, Aldridge and Oden.
-
Re: It's sad to add Brandon Roy to that "could have been" list.
I agree with you, Conan, Roy could have been one of, if not, the best SG in the League had he remained healthy. He was a joy to watch. Pure fundamentals. Unfortunately, now we'll never know what his ceiling was. Just when he was starting to dominate, he gets a bad injury, and now this.
-
Re: Broussard: Brandon Roy retiring for medical reasons
This is really sad. He was one of my favorite players, could have been the best 2 guard in a year or two. I hope he has a future ahead of him as an assistant coach or something. You can tell the guy just loves basketball.

Re: It's sad to add Brandon Roy to that "could have been" list.
When he was healthy, he was averaging 27/5/5 on 48+ FG% for 22 straight games (Nov-Dec 09). Then, he got injured and was never the same.
Usually, most elite wings peak scoring-wise when they are 27 or 28. For Brandon, that's supposed to be this year. Unfortunately, we won't get to see that.
-
Re: It's sad to add Brandon Roy to that "could have been" list.
I had so much respect for his game and attitude. The "could have been" list is always so depressing to think about.
Best wishes to him, though.

One of my favorite players in the league easily. Dude was a straight baller. Feel bad for the guy, maybe he can make a comeback?
Anyone else remember this game against the Rockets?

I was there for that game and his 52 point game. Roy gave me the best in person memories of basketball in my life.
It truly is a sad day for Blazer fans (and basketball fans in general). Our beloved Roy has retired after only 5 years in the league. So crazy that he plays only 5 years and makes 3 all-star teams, with many predicting he could surpass Drexler in many ways for the Blazers. It just unraveled so fast. To me, this is sadder than amnestying him. If we amnestied him and he signed elsewhere, it could have helped the team but we could have remained happy for Roy. Now, it is just a sad situation. I grew excited to see one more season of Roy, but at least he gave us one last memorable moment in versus Dallas. Some of my greatest Blazer memories have been due to Roy even though he was only here 5 years. I thank Brandon for all he did for the city of Portland and basketball fans everywhere. I hope that the team finds a position for him in the future.

Re: Broussard: Brandon Roy retiring for medical reasons
:( Poor Roy. He has such awful luck. It's a shame really. He still gave us one last memory with his game against the Mavs this past postseason.

Will the Blazers retire Brandon Roy's jersey?

[QUOTE=Semi]Seems like all of you have forgotten the past. The playoff-series against Phoenix where he played despite the doctors where saying he shouldn't. If you've ever played any sport in your life you would understand why he didn't just call it quits in that series. Tnx 4 being an asshole tho.

Re: It's sad to add Brandon Roy to that "could have been" list.
One of the guys in the league I really liked. When you have so many arrogant a -holes in the league as stars this guy was a hard worker and let his play do his talking. Injuries ruin careers. Life goes on I wish him the best. Someone told me he may take a year off (retirement) and come back.

I have played very much sport in my life, don't talk shit here. And I also know that you always want to win and you're competitive, but when my carear is in the balance I would just think about it and would do the right thing. Come on, I don't understand why nobody gets this even a little bit. I understand you're all sad for this guy and all that but I just state the obvious and don't even want to troll or be the asshole here!

Re: Will the Blazers retire Brandon Roy's jersey?
Lesser Blazers have had their jerseys retired, so I think they will. 3 all star teams and a rookie of the year in his 5 year career, plus dragging the team out of their worst years in existence.

:facepalm
Roy is not retiring because of that. His knees were more of a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' type of situation. It was known since college that his knees were an issue, and he would have lost all the soft tissue regardless of the Suns series.
-
Re: It's sad to add Brandon Roy to that "could have been" list.
How many players have retired after 5 years that have at least 3 all star selections under their belt? Who was the last rookie of the year to retire after 5 seasons?
-
Re: Will the Blazers retire Brandon Roy's jersey?
That's a pretty sad career to hang your hat on.
No offense to Roy of course, it's not his fault. But longevity matters in the game of basketball. Being great for a few seasons <<< than being great for a decade.
He's not worthy of retiring his jersey. Quite frankly his career wasn't all that impressive in the terms of remarkable NBA greats.

And who are you? Roy's doctor? Roy's knees?
-
Re: Will the Blazers retire Brandon Roy's jersey?
If he sticks around as a coach or in the front office, as I suspect he will, I could see it happening for dedication to the team, but to do it just based on his playing career would be an insult to others who have had their jerseys retired.
-
Re: Broussard: Brandon Roy retiring for medical reasons
Roy has actually been decling even when he was an all star. He used have many games of near triple doubles. As his knees wore down he was still such a crafty scorer people thought he was getting better. If he had healthy knees he would have been even better than a 22 5 and 5 player. His knees haven't just fallen apart over night. This has been happening over his whole career. Brandon Roy was a great player that I don't think we ever got to see fully healthy. That would have been something. His defense would have been better too.
