There are a number of complications that can arise and I will be on anti-rejection medications that lower my immune system making me vulnerable to other illnesses. Good chance I will become diabetic and get skin cancer, in addition to other possible outcomes. Plus the medications, like Prednisone, have their own shitty side-effects. But all of that is better than the alternative.

I can tell you from experience that, for many recipients, the medications are fairly easily tolerated. Maintaining generally good health post-transplant (diet, exercise, taking meds on strict schedule, etc) make a huge difference. And you can protect against skin cancer just like anyone else; you'll just be at higher risk if you don't.

As for the bolded, truer words were never spoken.

Kidneys only play a small part in filtering alcohol (liver does the bulk). I was still allowed to drink, even once I was put on dialysis. In fact, on dialysis, the alcohol is filtered even better, so generally people don't get hang overs when on peritoneal dialysis and drinking. I never got around to testing that though.

Also, I think I told you that I wouldn't have gone over the top because I had recently had surgery to start doing dialysis.
