What you don't understand is that they get paid in FULL...minimum wage to serve your. its their job to serve you. They have no other duties BUT to serve you.
So why should they be entitled to a tip? When they are simply doing their job.
If they don't like the wage of being a waitress, they can get another one.
Like some restaurants that charge over 30 dollars a person, the amount of tips become outrageous very easily when there are a party of 5 or more. At this point, charge over 30 a person, the restaurant can easily give their waitresses a higher wage.
You are trying to make sense out of culture, not gonna happen. People don't tip because they think, "Oh these poor waiters make sh!t". People tip because...well it's the customs to. It's the sign that you appreciate the service, in the USA.
Just like...why do Japanese bow instead of shaking hands? Why do in many countries get offended if elders are called by first name? It's just their culture. Their sign of respect.
It's one thing to not tip, that is your right and the beauty of the system, but these people who bitch about it and make threads ranting, come across like most people do who are complainers, straight up annoying. If you don't have the funds or want to spend the money it's okay, just don't whine about it. Please don't tip and leave it at that. It's when people try to justify it, is when it becomes pretty petty and whinny.
If tipping ended today, wages would have to increase, therefore leading to higher costs, so essentially it all would balance itself out and you would still be paying the same amount. Pretty freaking simple.
I tip 20% every time out because the service folks make below minimum wage in Massachusetts. It's not breaking my bank, especially if the service is top-notch. If the service is bad, I still tip 20%...and then make a note to never visit that establishment again. Lord knows there's plenty of options out there should I feel like dining out.
Now...all that being said, tips aren't a divine right. They're a cultural courtesy to the service industry professionals who willingly place themselves at our disposal. If someone doesn't want to give one, that's no reason to fly off on a rant. You want guaranteed money, there are plenty of industries you can work in to get that.
I usually tip 20%. 10-15% if they weren't great, 25-30% if they were great.
OMG even if they do make minimum wage who gives a ****? It's not like anybody can live on minimum wage, help the poor bastards out and quit bitching.
Why does America have this consensus that people should tip 15%?
I mean these waitress/waiters are making at least minimum wage PLUS tips. This is almost $20-40 per hour. How is that even fair? Thats a very very good wage for someone without a college education and doing some trifling work.
Other jobs like CPAs or attorneys do not get tipped. In fact, with these occupations, people try to take advantage of them and demand free consultations before even signing a retainer with them
No other occupation requires tips, but why restaurants? If those waiters/waitress feel they are underpaid, they can always get another job.
People who work much harder jobs don't even make $20 per hour.
I am sure this has been pointed out, but minimum wage doesnt apply to servers. There is a difference minimum wage for them, which I think varies by state. Basically, they have to earn minimum wage INCLUDING their tips.

again, no they dont. Server minimum wage is something like 2.50 per hour in the states I am familiar with.
Now, the real tip scam is bartenders. Supposed to be a buck a drink? What a rip off.

California you get $8 minimum wage even if you are a waitress.
Don't get me started with bartenders.
They want tips for popping a bottle for me.

Restaurants are some of the riskiest businesses out there and profit margins are incredibly thin with this system of tippin already in place.....if they had to pay their waiters/waitresses 16-20$/hr so a snotty nosed fugazzy like you would stop bitching, forget about it.
Best advice for you is to stay at home and only interact with the world via the Internet, where your distorted view of reality can remain reinforced by other pre teens agreeing with your simple and clueless ideas.
Restaurants are some of the riskiest businesses out there and profit margins are incredibly thin with this system of tippin already in place.....
This.
Generally the costs of food, employment, and overhead account for ~70% of most restaurants' gross in the industry. Just thought people should know that since they clearly don't.
Its pretty clear you're the idiot. I suspect you are a ****en waiter.
Go get your ass to work on a sunday you dipshit.
i worked mcdonald's part-time my senior year in HS. went in to computer science right after that and never worked in the food industry again. but i still go to restaurants and i still very much appreciate the many jobs those people do. thank you very much.
BUT here's a major news flash for you since you don't seem to have comprehended it yet: servers get paid about half minimum wage across the states and are expected to make up the rest by tips. the numbers may vary, but that's the basic situation across this land.
hopefully one of these days you'll get off of your bratty little ass and recognise simple reality. in the meantime, your views and the 'stats' you've posted in this thread are quite, quite pathetic.
No wonder youre calling people cheap. Its easy to spend mommy and daddy's money. Try making your own money and see you being super "generous"
I make my own money and think you are coming off like a cheap, miserable prick who doesn't know what the hell you are talking about. I always tip well and never even worked as a waiter though I do know enough about the food biz to know they get shit on constantly and don't get paid what they deserve in most cases. You're just a cheap shit who is desperately trying to justify being a cheap shit so you don't feel like the asshole you are behaving as.
Can someone even survive on their own in a state as exspensive as Cali only making minimum wage? Do we expect high school kids who live with their parents to supply the demand for all these service jobs?

And in the mean time your stats are completely wrong. Waiters and waitresses make minimum wage in Cali.

Tell that to the subway lady who's serving you food. Ask them how much tips THEY are making.
So a high class expensive restaurant, charging over 50 dollars a plate gets to charge a MANDATORY 18% gratuity? give me a break. No other service ANYWHERE do this.
Go ask your grocery bagger or the cashier how much they are making and how much tips they are getting.

Those are shittier jobs dipshit, go ask how much forced labor workers in China make...Go ask how much starving nomadic tribes in Africa make in tips....go ask how much a lifer in peneteniary makes in tips in the laundry room, go ask how much a 14 year old Russian girl forced into sexual slavery makes in tips, you flagrant imbecile...
You don't get the same service from waiting in line and doing your own groceries, and it's also not as satisfying as a formal outting, that's why they don't make tips...
Any other fool proof arguments to excuse your behaviour as a piece of shiiit greedy scum broke biitch?

What the **** are you talking about? So all of a sudden serving people at a restaurant is a prestigious job?
The baggers job is to Bag, the cashiers job is to man the cash register, the waiter's job is to serve.
Roles are clearly defined. Do your job or get the **** out.
Why dont u go tip your doctor next time for his excellent service. Or the nurse who provided you excellent service. Next time go tip the nurse who cleaned your grandma's diapers 18%.

I'll tip your girl for her mediocre service, because that's all that fits inside her
Homie you bring up doctors, so why don't you bitch about how they gouge the shit out of you with costs? You rather whine about 10 15 bucks for the homie serving you your dinner? Everywhere you go you gotta pay one way or another. I didn't think it was that hard to understand.
Haha, I made this exact same thread a few years ago, nighas were goin apeshit about why you should be tipping and if you don't you deserve to die and shit, lol.

For the record I don't think you should die. But it would be nice if you got ran over by an 18 wheeler and survived

I've honestly had some positive expierences tipping. Gave the bartender a 20 dollar tip my first drink, they appreciated it so much I got free drinks all night after that. I still tipped each drink too.
Tipping at restaurants is still the dumbest thing in the world. If anybody, I'd rather tip the damn cook.
The world is a bunch of copycats. That's the only reason why we tip, the only reason. Most of y'all aren't doin it because you are nice people, it's because you don't wanna be called an asshole.
I'm pretty sure the first person to tip was some wealthy guy at a huge party and some poor lil person was just running around giving everyone food. Rich guy felt bad and gave them a bunch of money for their troubles.

For sure, everyone loves a guy who gives away money.
Always get a good laugh hearing miserable penny pinchers rationalize their ways. If you don't approve of the restaurant industry then go home and make yourself a tuna sandwich. Don't go out to eat and then scrooge the waiters out of a few dollars just because "you don't believe in it." At least give the waiters a heads up in advance so they can spit in your shit.

Lol, so you're tellin' me you tip from the goodness of your soul, and not because everyone else does it and it's an unwritten rule to tip or you'd considered an asshole or in your own words a "penny pincher"?
You can be real here, no one here is gonna spot in you food. Pretty sure that's why everyone else here tips.

Nah homie I tip because I know that running a restaurant is hard work and being a waiter isn't the easist job in the world. I enjoy being able to go out and grab a healthy and filling meal.
Listen if you don't like the fact that tipping is common practice or if you think it's hypocritical to be sympathetic towards those in the industry then thats on you. Just don't go out to eat and instead go grab yourself some fastfood. It's really that simple. Noone is forcing you.
btw tips are often split between staff so the cook might be getting some of your tip too

Every work is hard work, not just restaurant waiting. I'm not talking bad or down at waiters, I tip. But really, why do we tip only waiters?
I've never seen anyone tip the garbageman and say "hey, thanks for keeping the neighborhood clean", or the plumber who comes buy and unclogs your pipes, or the janitor at your 9-5 office job, ect. And with this someone will bring up the wages. Garbageman, plumbers, janitors, ect make more than waiters. Not being hard, but is that our problem?
Go down to the shelters on weekends if you wanna help someone who's in real needs. They need the help more than waiters, I bet.

The difference between all of the jobs you listed and a waiter is the fact that they all get paid a large salary for what they are doing. The fact of the matter is that waiters don't get paid fully in salary, part of their income DEPENDS on the tip. If they are not recieving tip then they are not getting paid for their work.
The reason the industry works like that is because there is not a ton of profit to be made cooking up meals so the restaurant depends on its customers to step up and pay the waiters for their service in addition to what they are paying for the food itself. Like I said, if you don't like the way it works then you take it up with all restaurant owners who are trying keep their business afloat. When you don't tip you are scrooging the wrong people.

How stupid are you? Honestly? You are arguing some retarded shit on the nba boad and over here you cant seem to grasp even the most basic explanation.
How stupid are you? Honestly? You are arguing some retarded shit on the nba boad and over here you cant seem to grasp even the most basic explanation.
I think the stupid one is you. You are the one thats so scared of people calling you an asshole so you conform to society and follow its ways.
Just a ridiculous retarded American mentality and culture. People working hard just because they get tips. I am staying in South Korea and it's every bit (if not much more) modern in living conditions etc. However, with these service industries (cabs, restaurants, etc) you don't tip. What's even crazier..is that the service is still 100x better than back at home. They treat you so well, just because it is their job and they know other people can easily do what they do. They appreciate just having a job and making sure they do a good job at it.
I like the In n Out mentality. Pay a reasonable wage ($9 an hour to start if im not mistaken). Get rid of this tipping wildness. Gotta tip everywhere, bartenders (and I was one), etc. It's ridiculous.
Personally, I like a system better where everyone is rewarded if the company/restaurant is successful. Also, rewards people for staying with a company longer. Turnover is a huge cost and waste of scrills in restaurants. Simply, have a year-end bonus (even for part-time workers). If the company does good, everyone gets rewarded.
end rant/
I agree with you, but unfortunately because of our culture, it those service jobs would be worse than they are now if they weren't getting tipped.

Can you not read? Are you incapable of that basic skill?
