If you play with people who hustle back on D it wouldn't be a problem.
I don't like half court because if you make a stupid pass or dribble too much and turn it over, you have time to set up your D because the other team has to clear. If it's full court, it's a fast break dunk/layup. With that in mind, you actually have to play smarter in order to avoid giving up easy baskets.

Things i hate the most:
> People who call fouls for the slightest bit of contact.
> People who get mad when we don't call their stupid foul.
> When bigger people step on my feet :L
> When people get one block and they act as if they just won the NBA finals. Seriously. Gtfo.
> When people with no handles ( centers ) dribble the ball as if their a PG.
> When people hog the ball...
> When the person you check the ball to shoots it instead of checking it back.
> When people classify taking one step as "Getting crossed" --'
> When people are racist
> When people who don't even play ball play
> When people think their mad cause they shot it from halfcourt.
> When people think their And1 and stay in one spot trying to cross people. Notsureifsrs
> When people are hypocrites eg. My friend thinks he's got better handles then me because i apparently "carry the ball" all the time, then when he carries it he acts like we're all wrong. Pls. Stfu
> Not trying to be racist here, but when some black people go around acting like their the best cause their black. Just cause most of the best players in the nba are black, doesn't mean your one of them.

I'm in high school. I deal with this crap everyday :/

It's not going to matter with good 3 point shooters. I literally had no choice one in 3v3 sometimes because another guy kept making them on the other team. We played like 5 half court games and must have drained 25 threes each in each others eye. Boring as shit and felt like a damn shoot around but I wasn't about to let that guy think that he was the only one that could shoot lol.

Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
- People who hard foul. Seriously its a fvcking pick up game I have other sports I play and cant risk hurting myself.
That's a big one for me. And I'm not referring to guys who make a play and just want to prevent a bucket with a solid hack. I'm speaking of those whose fouls would be considered flagrant or intentional in real games. I'm also not fond of bear hugs or wrap ups.
And to be clear, my issue with these plays doesn't have to do with me despising contact or something. It's just, streetball is merely streetball - I'm playing for fun and it's real life. I can't really afford to have people undercutting me or pushing me from behind on dunk attempts. If there was something at stake, I could better understand it. But with my terrible health insurance, I literally cannot afford to have folks taking me out on purpose during random pickups.

Your second part is really true I get being competitive but it is just a pickup up game there is nothing we are playing for and it the big picture it does not matter who wins

1. Guy who comes to play basketball in order to get his cardio workout and can't hit a layup but keeps trying it :coleman:
2. The guy who calls everything a reach in
3. The guy who always calls for the ball when you know he isn't good. And when you score, he just rolls his eyes at you.
4. The guy who always says my bad
5. The guy who cherry picks a ton.
6. The guys who take hand checking to a new level (it's an universal thing at our gym that you can get away with it to an extent)
7. Teammates who want to play zone.

Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
When you team has 2 buddies that hog the ball and only pass the ball to themselves.
There was one guy I remember who clearly couldn't dunk, but he always tried but the best he can do is lay it up and tap the rim with his middle finger. He blows it every time.

This is by far the worst. When I see a guy we picked up wearing Kobes, I always groan. I know what to expect :lol. 13 missed threes and really dumb shot selection.
Although some of the people who wear Kobes are just very hot/cold. I remember seeing one drop 12 points out of a 16 point game only missing one deep three. But I've seen the same person brick open layups.

Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
Calling for a pass when your teammate is in the motion of shooting. I just don't get the knowledge behind that. Go for the rebound. There been a few times I bricked a three because that annoying teammate kept asking for the ball even when I had a wide open 3. I never get that from the regulars at the gym because they know I'm a spot up shooter.

Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
People who don't have a basic grasp of spacing/angles. Ie if I'm posting on the left block(my go to move) and you go post it the middle of the paint 3 feet from me. There's nowhere for me to go now(and I don't mean people who are cutting to that area trying to get a layup, I love to pass out of the post, I mean people who stand there like they are posting too), guys who refuse to cut when it's basic to the game. Ie you throw an entry pass and you aren't a shooter, cut through and I'll find you if you are open on the cut or you'll clear space. Guys who try to throw a post entry pass from taking it out when the angle is so much easier when someone you give it to someone on the wing.
Guys who spot up, never cut, but then don't shoot the ball when they get it and are wide open. If you spot up you have to take wide open looks when they are there even if you aren't a great shooter(if you know you can't shoot why are you spotting up????) guys who foul on one end but throw a fit at any contact on the other. Guys who "take" fouls anytime the game is to game point. I don't mean hey I'm trying to d up and I might foul you, I mean if you get the ball inside the three point line I'm gonna bear hug you guys. Absolutely hate that.
Guys who take traveling/carrying to ridiculous lengths. I know it's pickup but don't run 6 steps and expect me not to call it.
-
Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
Yeah, people who don't cut is really common in your average game. It's a really simple concept to make a pass, cut, and rotate through the offense but a lot of people have never learned that.
A pet peeve for me is when guards don't use or know how to use a pick when u set it. It's just annoying to see someone take 10 dribbles and wave me off instead of just running a simple pick and roll.

I've had folks bear hug me just prior to breaking into the open court too, like clear path fouls - also awful.

Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
Iv had people straight up yell no 1s. Foul em if they come inside the line on those points. I mean hey I'll yell no layups if it's game point on d and I may foul on those points but I at least try to block the shot/play defense.
-

I mean hey I'll yell no layups if it's game point on d and I may foul on those points but I at least try to block the shot/play defense.
Right. I don't know if the former is cheating the game, but it's close. Typically, there's a reason not to foul (free throws, fouling out). In pick-up ball, it's kind of an honor code thing.
Yet in that end-of-game "no 1's" scenario, if the defense executes as they so desire, it just creates an endless stream of bear hugs and check-ups. One option is to settle for jumpers, but I choose not to let the terrorists win.
-
Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
Like I said I'm generally a post player, and that option completely negates posting. Entry pass-bear hug-ball up top. Really annoying. We thought about and seriously discussed instituting a rule that 3 intentional fouls in a row equals a point in those situations but decided against it. The thing is this goes back to what someone else said about people worrying too much about winning. I mean I'm competitive and I always want to win but not to that extent. We don't get anything for winning other than fun. And that isn't fun

Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
- Players who put zero effort into defense but shoot every time they touch the ball
- Players who trash talk for the sake of trash talking, aka constantly being a dick because they saw one Reggie Miller documentary and thought it was cool
- Players who play off ball but don't move whatsoever, make no cuts, set no picks, just spot up and wait
- Players who emulate Brandon Knight in transition..aka blatantly ignore teammates in 3-on-1 fast breaks, put their head down and barrel into the defender. Brick the layup, call a foul
- Players who have terrible handles and footwork but insist on attacking every time. Get stripped or swatted every drive but are totally oblivious to how ineffective they are
- Players who have no skills or understanding of the game whatsoever, but compensate by playing way too hard, constantly fouling hard

Dude must've been a regular James Harden if you guys kicked him out without first trying to talk to him :lol
But for me it's less of a basketball issue and more of a mentality issue, just doesn't sit right with me when a teammate isn't engaged in half the game. Don't care if we give up easy buckets if a guy just sucks at defense..but when the guy just doesn't care it's frustrating as fvck.
Ironically I modeled my game a lot off Tony Parker, a scoring PG who sucks ass at defense :oldlol:

I play tough defense and set mean picks. I don't drive though, I'm that type of guy who spots up. I don't have handles whatsoever but I do have a wicked 3 point shot. When it's on, I have hit 2-3 in a row before (once it was 8). When it's off, I gotten better at give and gos for guys on the perimeter. Also my mid range at the corners is probably my best shot. Very rare for me to brick that shot. If I think a guy is playing dirty, I may run my mouth. Like rough defense or asking for a lot of calls that really weren't fouls. I rarely call fouls despite being hit on the hand a lot while shooting.
I also can't stand cherry pickers at all.

Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
That guy who won't pass the ball no matter how bad he's missing.. Watched an entire team of players like that at the gym the other day. Whoever dribbled it down the court was likely to shoot it 90% of the time
Then that one guy who never moves and wonders why he never gets the ball despite a man being all over him

Re: Things Players in Pickup Games Do That Annoy You
not a pickup game situation but what I find annoying is when I'm on the court by myself working on my shot or some moves and then a guy comes up to me and asks if I want to play some 1on1 (which is fine) but when I tell him that I don't want to play the guy then starts shooting on the same hoop even though there's nobody playing on the other hoop on the other side of the court. Probably thinking: "I'm gonna play right here untill you change your mind" :facepalm
