The details in this game are beyond ridiculous. People who were upset that GTA V didn't have much of a forest area shouldn't be disappointed here.
I dont care about online. Just give me a great single player campaign with all the usual Rockstar fixings (great story, interesting characters, fun and inventive missions, lots of weapons, a varied map to explore, some "holy shit!" moments, a lot of collectibles, Easter eggs and myths) and I'll be one happy guy.
Following up on my post from August; Rockstar gave me everything I wanted, and then some. :applause:
this shit needs to come out for PC
So I've been playing a ton. My opinion of it continues to move up the more I play. I'm only just starting chapter 3, but the map is incredible. I find myself just wandering around and checking stuff out. I really go out of my way not to do main missions for fear I'll miss something along the way.
It's still got some warts. It shouldn't have taken as long as it did to get comfortable with all the controls. I still don't like all the button holding to interact. And I'm still a little bothered by the shear volume of maintenance required with some of the stuff. But as I slowly am able to let some of that stuff go, the world itself is just too remarkable of an achievement to not love the game.
^Take your time. I did, and I still missed some cool stuff because I didn't take enough time.
Bump!
Finally got 100%. 1 month to play through the story and another 3 months to finish all the stuff. It was a grind, but I'd rather have stuff to do than not have stuff to do.
Best game ever.

So this is an exceptionally long article reviewing this game that, while I think is a bit hard on it in spots, does do a nice job of expressing a ton of my issues. There are some spoilers near the end ... if anyone ever gets there, but the beginning is a lot about the functionality and controls, and it really hits what I think.

The game isn’t perfect. My biggest pet peeve was bumping into someone in town while riding my horse and then having the cops coming at me, shooting to kill! There were other little annoyances, but the game does so many things right, I can forgive that stuff.

Recently started my second playthrough and I'm taking it slooooooowww. There is A LOT I missed, especially in terms of conversations in camp and random events I ignored the first time through.
This game has so much content, I can only imagine what GTA VI will have.
hm.
RD2 online was an epic fail
I finally completed Chapter 6.
RD2 online was an epic fail
Oh good. Maybe now they'll do the right thing and do some single-player dlc's instead.
I thought I'd bump this thread to celebrate the one year anniversary (approximately) of the greatest video game of all time. Because I insist.
Its def in my top 10, but wouldn't call it my favorite. Masterpiece though, best game of 2018.

It's up there for me. I get some of the gripes that Thorpe listed. Why does it feel like you're always running through treacle? The controls still aren't intuitive either. Even towards the end of the game I was occasionally pressing the wrong buttons and didn't always get into the cover spots I was aiming for. However this game was spectacular. I plan on playing it through for a 2nd time in the coming months.
I feel like theres an amazing game hiding under the surface of this thing. I desperately want to love it in its current state, but it just wont let me.
No doubt the graphics and sound are absolutely phenomenal... but the gameplay feels very tedious with all the bullshit micromanagement (I need to manage my characters nutrition? and my horse too? really?) and the keyboard+mouse controls are nearly unplayable (the gamepad isnt much better).
So after a year plus, I finally sat down over the weekend and finished this game. To be fair, I had completely stopped playing sometime late summer, so I hadn't played it in at least three months.
I knew I was extremely close to finishing it. I was in the epilogue and in the ranch. So there just couldn't have been much left. It was basically two sittings, maybe three hours total to finish it. Overall I was really pleased with the ending. Having not played it for an extended period of time, I have to say, the world had that incredible sense of awe reborn. I rode around, which I swore I wouldn't do, and did whatever miscellaneous missions I could find (a couple bounties really was it), then finished it up. When it ended, I went into my lists and found some stuff to finish. I was one horse short for example of finishing the horses, so I went and bought it. I looked up a few plants, because I was four short of finishing those, and then I looked up a few animals and felt that overwhelming too much here sense going on. I took it out and put in Resident Evil 2, which is one of the couple of games (Tomb Raider was the other) I let go while I put more time into this game than any game I've every played.
I still think flawed masterpiece is a really fair description.
These were the negatives I found with the game:
1.) The bounty system sucks. Just bump into someone in town and the law is after you, and they shoot to kill. Its silly. Especially annoying in St Denis where its very difficult to avoid doing this.
2.) Not enough enterable interiors. Every Rockstar game has this issue; I wish they would give us more. One again, especially an issue in St Denis where it would have been nice to be able to enter random houses and not just shops, taverns, etc.
3.) The desert part of the game (epilogue) feels somewhat underutilized. It would have been great to have a DLC that utilized this area more.
4.) Its sucks that gambling is so low stakes but I guess they did that to prevent people from doing the save game trick where you can amass huge amounts of money right from the start.
5.) Arthur moves slow as shit in camp. This never stopped being annoying.
These are just relatively minor quibbles though. The game does so many things right that I can forgive all of these.
PS
I decided to give this game another chance, one of the best gaming decisions I've ever made.
Despite the preposterously bad control scheme, this is still one of the top 5 games ever made.

Here's a link to a subreddit filled with pictures taken from the Red Dead photo mode. Some incredible looking stuff in here.

Should try expand your taste bro, lots of games out there as good or better than RD2. What else have you tried other than R* stuff and Hitman?

I havent been much of a gamer in recent years. I mostly stayed in my GTA/RDR comfort zone and then discovered Hitman. I did go on a binge and played a bunch of older PS2 and XBox 360 games that I never had - the original Hitmans, Mafia 1 and 2, Revolver, Gun, Silent Dogs and a few others. All were good. Alien Isolation was amazing. Honestly, I really dont even know what's good now. I'd like to play The Last of Us but unfortunately I have an Xbox.

I was the same way and didn't really game at all between 2005-2015, nothing on PS3 and mostly sports on PS2. multiplayer shooters on PC some.
Copped a PS4 in 2017 and just ran down the list of their top titles and exclusives. Now i'm hooked again and even copped a PS5 asap.
Your niche is 3rd person heavy narrative single players, that's practically Sony Exclusives to a tee. Would recommend snagging a PS5 when they actually become available and experience all the stuff for pennies. Think you get 20 of their best gems on PS+ subscription and most are getting next-gen upgrades so they won't feel outdated. GTAv next gen upgrade comes soon and I believe it's free, so will RDR2

Thanks. I'm in no hurry to get the next gen but will likely get Sony this time. Missing out on too much on the Xbox side.
