Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez were great tight ends in the NFL. Before they became football stars they were basketball power forwards in college that were deemed undersized for the NBA. LeBron Sr. had the body of an NFL tight end and still more athletic than most of them. In his 20s he would have been a nightmare red zone target and deep threat. This isnt quarterback where his throwing ability and ability to read defenses are important unknowns. He's big, he's strong, he's fast and he can jump.
Bronny doesn't have his dad's overwhelming size so I'm not sure he could have been a great football player but he had athleticism and in football the skills he would be working on aren't as difficult as the shooting and dribbling an NBA guard needs, just catching the ball, route running and backpedaling if he played D. The plays are more complicated and there are more plays to remember but there's no reason to think he's not smart enough to handle that whereas he may or may not ever learn to shoot.

It's possible that he becomes a good player butI am just analyzing what his talents make him look like to me. If he wasn't James son as a basketball player he would have been a walk on or community college player. Until/unless he develops a real NBA- level skill set he's going to be a magnet for hate. I don't care for all the hate he gets either but that's what can happen when someone that already has so many advantages gets an NBA contract that they clearly aren't worth. Pippen and Payton Jr don't get hate like him because they earned their spots.
And he also catches hate because there are some crazy folks that hate his dad.

No one pays attention to the careers of 55th picks but I can tell you for a fact that if a guy averages 5 points on 36% shooting in college he's not even going to be drafted under normal circumstances. A guy with those numbers is more likely to lose his scholarship than be drafted by the NBA.

He's literally one in a million and I had never heard of him until you mentioned him in this post. A bad college player almost nerve gets a shot at the NBA. Maybe he had amazing measurements or times at the combine but you almost never stink in college and then go to the NBA.

He’s short, but he’s more of a ball player than most famous sons. He shits on mjs kids. He just needs to learn to play. Time to sink or swim. It’s tough, but he has a shot. If he doesn’t get injured, that is.
And yea most people learn to shoot but he’s a baby. He has time. It’s about want now. Imo his time at usc showed he wasn’t that engaged. Now he has no obstacles, goodluck to him.

Marcus Jordan was never on an NBA roster but his college stats are far better. I didn't watch either of them play but with James averaging 5 points on 36% in college I don't see how he can be assumed to be better than anyone that made s college team.

He had that heart issue.
He is a better prospect due to athleticism imo.
I remember Jordan’s kids in college. Bronny is an explosive athlete. He can potentially play in the leeg. Mjs kids couldn’t have imo, or their path would be way harder.
Edit: i don’t think it is easy to understand how much having a heart attack and surgery would **** up your shape, rhythm, and mental. I am willing to give him a pass on that. I dislike bron as we know and bronny is benefitting in unique way. Still i wanna see him reach his potential which could be decent nba starter.

Bronny James has done nothing to show he's a better player than the 5ppg season tells us he is. Yeah he's athletic. So are all the youtubers making dunk videos. What makes him even as good as Mac McClung? If being athletic was enough the NBA would get flooded with guys that are not quite good enough to make the Olympics in track. That's not all there is to it. He has to develop a whole NBA skillset. It's possible but guys that need that much work and aren't big don't normally get guaranteed deals.
And he's this way with his dad giving him every possible advantage growing up in terms of the best coaches to develop his skills.

If he didn't work hard enough that's a horrible sign and no excuse at all. I wouldn't accuse him of that but I don't know what his work ethic is really like. Regardless you never see a pg size player in the NBA without a skillset. That's a ridiculous thing for a guard to lack.

His d is good, check some vids. He is very smart at how he approaches it. He needs to become a knock down shooter and if he can drive, too, he will be set.
He likely was in the gym and has a brain for it, but like i said he needs to be on some thousands of js a day routine. It’s tough, but it’s necessary. With his current skills, a jumper would be enough to be a rotation player or starter depending on his j. He is lacking a skill set to match his body. He is not super trash like he can’t dribble or anything.
I’m not saying he is gonna work hard enough to do it, but i am saying he is physically able to make it. He has to strap his nuts on and get to real work. Again, i’d take bronny’s body to ball with even tho he’s short.

I know he can defend his position. The problem is that a defensive specialist point guard with no offense is not valued. "Poor man's Patrick Beverly" doesn't belong in the NBA. The kind of development he needs is supposed to happen before a guy gets to the NBA. Whatever though if the Lakers want to use a roster spot like that it's their business.

Well, that's another criticism I have of him. He's not showing much of anything off ball. He spent most of his offensive playing time just standing in the corner. Don't know if it's poor coaching or what....but not a good look.

Two funniest YT takes were that he's like NBA 2k AI and that he's exactly how you'd expect LeBron to teach someone to play haha.
I dunno what he's doing, but I do think Bron is probably ****ing him up. In reality, he would have done better off on another team, I think. There were other teams that were slightly interested, and maybe they were intrigued about maybe getting Bron later, but this is def gonna be a shitshow. He'll get G leeg reps.
He's big bodied, he's got a good wingspan, and he can hop, so I mean... it's all there. He definitely plays like he's scared a lot, and I imagine playing with his dad makes him even worse.
I wouldn't be surprised if he did find his rhythm in the G league after awhile tho. Then lose it again when he's playing with Bron. Just doesn't seem like a winning situation.

Re: It's Official, Bronny James is a Bonafide Scrub
He could be the dumbest player I’ve ever seen.
He has no built up moves and courses of action for scenarios and on court setups.
He can’t shoot at all but doesn’t move to the level of the ball. He doesn’t cut, ever. He doesn’t communicate, ever.
In his first preseason game, he actually did something I’ve never seen. He made a swing pass that not only did his man not see, his man’s defender saw the entire way. And of course Nikeil Alexander Walker stole it and ran it back.
He actually threw a pass that only the defense could see. And it was a swing pass. One man away.
Anybody saying he can develop into a playmaker is kidding themselves. He struggles with everything. His brain hasn’t latched onto a single winning tendency or skill. He does nothing consistently.
Him having 4 TOV in 13 minutes and only taking one shot, a 3, is amazingly bad. He’s unaggressively turning it over once every 3 minutes. Playing a timid style and gives the ball up 4 times a quarter. It’s insanity he has a guaranteed deal.
I could go on long rant about the Lakers franchise and LeBron’s ego and lack of self-awareness but I’ll leave it here for now.
-
Re: It's Official, Bronny James is a Bonafide Scrub
I'm not a Bronny expert but I don't see anything that qualifies him to be on the roster other than his last name. He's undersized, he's not a freak athlete, he's not a good shooter you name it. The father-son thing is a great story, so maybe the Lakers are thinking that the story will sell a lot tickets or Lebron's influence on the GM is just simply huge. I don't really understand what's going on but the Lakers will be absolutely irrelevant this season.
In my opinion Lebron should have taken less money and joined a contender team for his last couple of seasons. Maybe he could have won an extra ring or two and get closer to MJ's record. Instead he still wants to be the star on the team which will neither help him nor the Lakers.

Re: It's Official, Bronny James is a Bonafide Scrub
Right now I see his ceiling as a diet coke Pat Bev, but he hasn't shown the latters knack for being an irritant which was part of his makeup.6'2 and can't really shoot at the NBA level with no real PG skills is a hard sell in 2024, athletic or not.

No, just the most public. Coaches and GMs hand their sons and and brothers jobs in their organization all the time, this is just the first time and Giannis has had his brother eating space in Milwaukee for years.

Re: It's Official, Bronny James is a Bonafide Scrub
I still can't believe Bronny is actually on an NBA court. He looks closer to a guy cosplaying as an NBA player than being an actual NBA player.
I was saying that he was 100% not an NBA talent by his senior year in high school. The best BASKETBALL course for him would've been a 4 year college player and then play overseas, but all of that is simply beneath his stature as Lebron's son to be honest. At some point it never became about Bronny as a basketball player and it was more about the "experience/branding" of him and Lebron on the same NBA team. A lot of casual fans are buying into it, but to me it isn't a "real" accomplishment because Bronny isn't an actual NBA talent. To be fair, this is the best financial course for Bronny, but does that even matter?
Ironically, MJ's son Marcus was a better player than Bronny.

Re: It's Official, Bronny James is a Bonafide Scrub
There's what, 400 or 450 roster spots in the NBA at any given time?
I've heard that the top 200 NBA players are always near as makes little difference the "best" 200 players on the planet. The next 200 guys are interchangeable with about 2,000-3,000 other players worldwide as far as talent goes and thus it is really down to team fit and a bit of luck if you can make it into the league competing with so many other ultra elite players just as good as you. These are the journeymen that are fighting to make it in the league let alone last 5 seasons or get any playing time whatsoever and may be in and out of the league going overseas, g-league, etc. The talent after the top 200 tends to follow a sharply declining bell curve and that sharp downward curve keeps plummeting sharply even beyond those initial 3,000 "NBA tier" players.
Bronny based on how he did already in college and doing some simple math out there on college players and pro players around the world is maybe a top 35,000 player on earth right now. Meaning there are 35,000 people who could arguably do the same or better at helping a variety of teams out there at any level. Which is still super elite compared to the average joe sure, but nowhere near the percentile of talent and ability that NBA players have to be to even be considered for the bottom half of the league. There are basically 35,000 other people on earth right now that could look at him and rightfully wonder why they didn't get the job.
