I mean the US was fascist for most of it's history (slavery, genocide of Native Americans, Jim Crow, etc.), it's only recently (relatively speaking) it moved into a more neoliberal model, but now it's backsliding because neoliberalism frequently leads to fascism (for two reasons: mainly because it alienates the left who stay home, but also because some people get sucked into fake right wing "populism" aka thinly disguised fascism because they're absolutely braindead and realize the system sucks but are easily duped into blaming it on minorities. Still, like this election shows, the bigger part of it is alienating the left, Trump couldn't win if the left had a good candidate).

There are definitely many on the right that understand what was shown and are either in favor or don't care enough to speak up. Also most simply had no idea it was happening. US soldiers discovered concentration camps without knowing they even existed. When they revealed what they found most of Germany was shocked and unaware.

That was during a time when something of that nature could be concealed though. No one had cameras in their pockets, filming of any kind was rare. So today it would be much harder to pull off and would require more public approval. Which is exactly what I think Elon was trying gauge with his salute. He is gauging the public reaction.
