Re: Did Lebron make "The Decision"? ...Or did Dan Gilbert make "The Plan"...
According to Woj, Gilbert met with Love at Vegas during Summer League.
Dan, the real Godfather, man this thread is just crazy
Re: Did Lebron make "The Decision"? ...Or did Dan Gilbert make "The Plan"...
Let's be real, LeBron came back for power, wealth, and it's his home. If anything, Dan made his decision take longer because of that letter. LeBron is the one that made that team a contender overnight. And they continued to win the first pick in the draft, which was either luck or it was rigged. How could they not build a young core around LeBron with that many first picks?

:lol Can someone swap Gilbert's and Riley's faces, replace Wade with Love and make it so that Lebron is leaving Wade hanging at the door.
Didn't feel like doing a GIF, but...

I'm not angry at all. 4 years of being relevant is more than enough for me. IJS he's getting a ton of credit, but LeBron is the one who went there for the power and wealth. He's the one that made them a contender over night.

Heaven forbid the Cavs or Dan Gilbert or anyone in this organization ever get any credit for anything, here. If any other franchise in the NBA had an offseason like this one, people would be bowing at the feet of the GM/owner.
If LeBron didn't commit to Miami in 2010, they probably wouldn't have been contending either. Did that stop people from hailing Riley from the rooftops? In reality, all he did was clear cap space and meet with James in an attempt to convince him to come to Miami... exactly what Gilbert and Griffin just did. We've all had to hear about "The Godfather" nonstop for the past four years... is it really a big deal if Gilbert gets a little credit?

I didn't say he should get no credit. I'm saying it was easier to convince LeBron to go back than it was to get him to Miami. I mean LeBron won two titles and two MVPs in Miami. He has nothing more to prove. The only thing left for him to do was to go back to Cleveland and finally bring them a title. Plus they are going to give him max money and a better team. Oh and it so happens to be his hometown. Riley had to convince him to leave the the place he's lived his whole life to an unknown environment and take a big pay cut for the caliber of player that he is. Nobody deserves the max more than LeBron. Gilbert deserves some credit, but LeBron had all the power in FA. He held FA hostage all by himself. So I'm not going to make Dan some godfather even if people are just kidding around. LeBron had full control of things.

The reality is, Dwyane Wade probably had more to do with Miami pulling off that "Big Three" than Riley did. He was Riley's recruiter. Riley still received the bulk of the credit for pulling it off. That's the way it goes. When a team has an amazing offseason, the owner and GM get credit for it.
And, yeah... it is kind of amazing how the Cavs have been transformed this offseason. It actually started with Kyrie accepting the a max extension, which a lot of people had been questioning for years.
I've been saying for the past three years that the Cavs had been doing an incredible job of staying patient and collecting assets for when the time was right. Now, did I foresee this magnitude of an offseason? No, but the Cavs' plan has been obvious for some time and they deserve a good deal of credit for pulling off this coup.
This post is from February of 2013 regarding this thread, which promoted the idea of giving up every asset we owned for LMA.
This roster has been put together very deliberately so far with a bunch of young talent. There is tons of cap space and draft picks to make other major moves when the time is right. The time isn't right yet.
And, when the time is right, moves will be made with draft picks and cap space, not by giving away basically all of the team's young assets not named Irving. If that is what they wanted for LMA and the Cavs' were interested, I'm relatively certain we'd move along to the next name on our list.
From March 2013:
I still think the Cavs make a hard push to try and pry Kevin Love away from the T-Wolves. I'm not sure if it is possible or if Minnesota would even entertain offers, but I think he would be a perfect fit next to Kyrie/Dion.
To be fair, I don't know the Wolves' cap situation and if they will be buyers or sellers in the next few years. But, if they don't feel Love is going to re-sign in 2014, they might be willing to hear a hard sell.
What the Cavs have been doing by hoarding all of these assets has not been a secret. And, it has paid off in a way that not even the biggest optimist could have predicted. A lot of that has to do with LeBron James coming back... but, does James come back if the Cavs don't have the assets to pull off a move like this one?
I honestly don't think so. He saw the situation here and the potential for a huge move like this one and all the young talent and leaped. The Cavs deserve some credit for that. I'm not saying you have to call him Godfather, because I thought that was stupid when it came to Riley.
