Gordon Hayward is coming into his own not just as a starter in the NBA, but as a legit star, with room to grow.
Hayward is averaging career highs in points per game, rebounds per game, steals per game and free-throw attempts. The points, nearly 19 per game, highlight his improved ability to take his defender off the dribble, and his increased shooting percentages from last season are just under 4 full percentage points from the floor and the 3-point line.
The increased free-throw numbers are impressive as well and underline the rate at which Hayward is getting to the free-throw line. While shooting percentage is important, it is overshadowed by the rate at which a player gets to the free-throw line based on the fact that a free-throw is such a high-percentage shot. Hayward averages the 15th most free-throws per game of any player in the NBA, and does it despite taking relatively few field goal attempts, increasing his overall efficiency.
While I've complained in the past about the long and slow process of the current rebuild, which seems to hang in the balance of each new draft pick, the Jazz young roster is showing signs of great promise.
If Hayward continues this trend, he will be able to maintain not only his jack-of-all-trades reputation, but will become one of the NBA
Jody Genessy: There's nothing behind the Deron Williams-to-Utah rumor. Jazz haven't discussed trading for the ex-Utah guard, and it won't happen. #sources Twitter @DJJazzyJody
Thank God! They need a vet pg not another overpaid max player way past his prime.
If he ever got bought out I could see bringing him back but I doubt they ever would. They traded him for a reason and it wasn't because they thought he'd leave as a free agent. It will be a long time if ever that his number hangs from the rafters.
Enes finished with a career high 29 points on 12 of 22 shooting and took very few outside shots.
As I've said he's too good inside to be hanging out on the perimeter all the time.
Once Tyreke Evans got rolling and they isolated him mid block and brought Anthony Davis over on the pick and roll it becomes almost impossible to guard. The Pelicans were able to milk this play time and time again,
Jazz lead it by 14 with 11:25 left in the 4thand by 9 at 99-90 with 8:00 left and the Pelicans went on a 13-2 run. 4 straight baskets by Tyreke Evans in transition. Then the Jazz quieted the storm and it was a 2 point game with 2:20 left after Kanter hit two free throws. Anothny Davis then scored 7 straight points, two baskets off assists from Tyreke Evans.
Trey Burke scored 14 points in the first quarter the most he has scored in any quarter of his career.
Alec Burks fourth quarter is one to forget. 1 for 8 shooting with 2 turnovers.
Jazz got good production off the bench with double figures from Exum and Booker. This might be the first close game of the year where the Jazz had two double digit bench scorers. New career high for Dante Exum.
Booker needs to be benched when Favors returns though. Favors and Kanter need to be getting minutes opposite Rudy until they decide on one or the other.
Ryan Anderson burned the Jazz for 6 three pointers tonight. He had been struggling but he got great looks in transition and the Jazz were slow to close on him.
Well duh! That's why you're there. You're his guy.
The Jazz average 14.2 turnovers a game, which is tied for 15th in the NBA.
Average. Considering they don't have an NBA starting caliber pg that's not too bad. Obviously have a lot bigger issues.
ROAD WOES: The Jazz have lost five straight road games since point guard Trey Burke
Trey Burke had the best quarter of his career against the Pelicans, scoring 14 points and grabbing two rebounds in the first quarter. He made all five of his shots and his offensive outburst allowed Utah to lead for almost the entire first half.
Scored the most points anyway. Rather it was his best quarter is arguable I'm sure.
Favors not ready yet
Jazz center Derrick Favors missed his second consecutive game with a sprained ankle Tuesday. He participated in shootaround, but was ruled out before the matchup.

Looks like he's close. Time to see how he and Rudy look together. Enes and Rudy look good so far.
On Sunday, Gobert was good, with seven points and nine rebounds. He appeared to tire out in the second half, as he
The Jazz are not the Sacramento Kings.
No the Kings look like they might have a bright future if Cousins can kept together. The Jazz are going nowhere it would appear.
The euphemistic phrase Jazz management has settled on is the now familiar: "We will not skip steps."
What that means is the Jazz are asking for patience, while selling a more exciting up-tempo, transitional style.
But their pace is actually worse than a year ago! :facepalm

And no Favors. Hard to believe.
PHILOSOPHICAL DIFFERENCES
Pelicans coach Monty Williams said he didn't understand why the Golden State Warriors sent video to the league of Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green getting hit in the face by the elbow of Pelicans reserve Dante Cunningham on Sunday night. Williams said the contact looked inadvertent to him.
"If I have a problem with another team I go talk to the coach. That's how I operate," Williams said. "I don't like playing that game of calling the league and kind of whining about what happened."
