Re: Selfish to curse off homeless person asking for money?
Forward her message to Reddit. Right now, she is getting responses from her like-minded friends and other friends that don't agree don't want to call her out on a public forum. If you post it to Reddit, the rest of the internet may put her in her place for you.
This.

I was considering responding, but I don't know her well-enough to call her out. I come from a south-asian culture where this would be considered selfish way of thinking (India). To me, one of the goals of humanity is to help each-other overcome and survive first and foremost. I mean I work hard too, but I would never hesitate to give a couple dollar to somebody that will help provide them one meal. I'm lucky to have good college education with good family (yes, my dad also works his ass off into his late 50's but he would never hesitate to help some homeless person). Helping others is the right thing to do for me.

You sure bro?
Re: Selfish to curse off homeless person asking for money?
Back on topic, I judge homeless people and give money to the ones that look like regular guys, not the ones that are crazy or come across as drug addicts. If I have time, I go out of my way to buy them some food.
Funny story, my wife and I were leaving a Thai restaurant and we had some leftovers with us. Some in her 20's woman asked us for money so she could get McDonalds (she also wanted us to follow her down an alley... fat chance). We offered her our leftovers instead and she said, "No thank you, I don't like weird food."
Some people are ungrateful ****s and they deserve to be on the street
Also, the crazy street people should be locked up in an asylum. They're no going to get better by roaming the streets, they're ****ing crazy and a danger to others. Toronto has a crazy amount of crazy homeless people, it's such a bad image to tourists. They should clean that shit up and stop catering to the PC masses

Am I hanging out with the wrong crowd or is this truly the thought-process of most Americans? I do not have a huge friend circle, and I simply live in a small city in NJ. Am I wrong in being alarmed by all the 'likes' and posts by others agreeing with her? Is it a western culture thing?
Back to your question again. You & your families very success in this country feeds into the Horatio Alger Myth that is very much a part of American culture .
"Look at those immigrants like Bladefd & his family who come here with nothing & succeed. Why can't you or those people? Get a job you bum".
Most immigrants will 'succeed' in this country because the very fact that they take such a journey to make it here shows their personal ambition/drive/education,etc......
Don't allow those people to discourage you from acting upon the humanity /charity of your culture. There are many reasons people are homeless or down on their luck from bad choices in life, drugs or simply mental illness, but no reason to judge or mistreat them.
Many wealthy people in this country have been homeless / down on their luck at one time.

Ambition is something that everyone can have, or can gain if they don't have it. It is best to encourage ambition then it is to monetarily subsidize the lives of those who have none.
Re: Selfish to curse off homeless person asking for money?
I really don't care if a homeless person spends my money on booze. Once I've given it to them, I have no right to dictate to them how they spend it. Drink hard my smelly friend.

Please, choke that girl to death.
Re: Selfish to curse off homeless person asking for money?
What if the guy you give money to uses that money to buy crack or whiskey.
He is never going to change it up-if its as easy as asking random people in the street for your next fix, how is anyone ever going to get out of their addiction cycle? In this case, giving that random homeless guy is only feeding his addiction. You are basically paying your own money to worsen his situation and keep him on the streets.
If the guy is asking for money for food, I used to not mind offering to buy him a sandwich but most of the time the homeless people would turn it down and say no. bullshit.
If it gives you a sense of moral superiority to give homeless people money though so you can look down on people who don't, by all means keep on doing it. Just don't fool yourself into thinking your money is helping to fix the problem or better that homeless person's life.
Why run soup kitchens & provide shelter for the homeless? They might get free food, free shelter and end up stealing and doing crime from being healthy. Why even keep them alive? They might get frustrated and go on a rampage killing other people.
Why even use tax-money to help these homeless people who cannot help themselves? I don't want free-loaders to get my tax money. Get rid of the soup kitchens & shelter - they come from MY tax-money. I don't want to fool myself into thinking MY money is helping to fix the problem or better that homeless person's life. Lets just kill all the homeless.
I expressed my opinion through sarcasm, but I think it expresses my point.

you suck at debating. Your logic makes zero sense. You failed miserably at trying to express the point you are trying to make. Stop trying sport.
Re: Selfish to curse off homeless person asking for money?
What a bitch. The homeless man was asking for money, not taking it. He's not saying he deserves it, he just wants to scrap for some sort of happiness.
