You obviously got offended. And once again, judging by the title, you cant tell what language it is unless you're a language expert.
Quit being an illogical dumbass. It was an extremely nit-picky criticism which points to being offended.
I know you can't tell by the title. But how did you come to the conclusion it was Chinese? Just saying... You obviously read the names, but came to a conclusion based on your horse blinders. Many of you wear them.
Instead of coming to conclusions, I read more, and it told me that it was Japanese. You think I ever heard of the movie?
I couldn't even tell it was an asian movie with the title: Lolita vib-zeme or whatever. Sounds more european to me, only when I saw the director's name could I tell it was japanese.
Do movie titles like: "Old boy" "In the mood for love" or "Chocolate" tell you they're asian?
Neither could I. It sounded French at first.
Old Boy? Not at all. Chocolate either... But people can choose to read further on to find out the origins of the movie instead of making baseless comments.
That's what I was gonna say.
I dunno how many threads have been created here asking people what their favorite movie is, and three months back, over half of them listed "The Dark Knight", like they'd never seen a decent movie until last summer.
Falking pathetic.
The Dark Knight is one of my favourite movies of all time, for no other reason than because it was ****ing fantastic. It has its flaws, but its pros far far far outweigh them. Critical acclaim, commercial acclaim, one of the most memorable(or at the very least popular) performances of all time, and the list goes on. I'd be very surprised if your head wasn't right up its ass when it first came out, and its only now that you're hopping on the "overrated" bandwagon that everybody seems to cherish so dearly.

I'm always pretty drawn to people with completely different tastes than mine.
The only thing I can't stand is when someone is ignorant, but doesn't recognize or acknowledges it. Every thing else is cool with me.

I don't have a problem with that, but it's April 2009, and you look back in the two decades that constitute your life, and does The Dark Knight prevail over every other film you've seen as a child? Is it a bonafide factual opinion.
Just need confirmation, brosh.

No nothing to do with following. I loved Batman Begins and it'd be in my top 20 easily, and I remember Patiently Waiting and my mind being blown several times throughout summer night viewing of Dark Knight. When the score came, and Bale was running away and the narrator was like... "sometimes the truth just ain't good enough," i had chills like f*ckin Tyrone Biggums. At that precise moment I could've called it my fav.
Perhaps its my memory, but that feeling wore off about six months later. Like I rewatched it on DVD, and it just seemed great but not epic. It's all good tho I'll take your word for it.
Big Lebowski
Damn. first post and the only one that bugs me. Depending on state of mind, I might say this is my favorite movie. (there's a few others that probably trump it, but it would be one of a few i'd consider saying if i had to pick ONE favorite) I agree with Dasher about all the quirky comedies that are topical and grow stale as the comedic collective concious catches up, but Lebowski is timeless high art to me.

GOOD ONE!! i like the movie a lot, but if it's your "favorite", you're probably a douche bag.

Ditto on that.
The worst type of person is the elitist who always denies the fact that anything new could possibly eclipse something "classic". This goes for music and basketball players as well.

Quit getting butt hurt over Lost in Translation. It was in no way a masterpiece. It was a solid film, but it was not mindblowing in anyway shape or form.

Re: If someone told you their favorite movie was "____________" you'd know you hate t
It was just a really forgettable movie. Generally well done, and Murray and (particularly) Johanson were both fantastic, but it just didn't go anywhere. I enjoyed myself watching it, I have no inclination to do it again.
I'm annoyed by people who absolutely hate and love lost in translation.
I would never call it a bad movie, because its not. But I'm not gonna lie, it bored me to tears and I have no desire of watching it again. There are plenty of people who genuinely love the movie and thats all well and good. Yet there are also a good deal of posers who like it just so that they can come across as "artistic."
Also, I didn't like the way it depicted the Japanese. I wouldnt go so far as to call it racist, but it definitely bothered me.
-
Re: If someone told you their favorite movie was "____________" you'd know you hate them
I'm quite the opposite. It's a character study. I can't think of films more interesting than character studies. I live for them.

Re: If someone told you their favorite movie was "____________" you'd know you hate them
Yea lost in translation is a big target for people trying to act like they have taste. But at the same time its not bad, and people who hate it usually don't like good movies either. It's a very troublesome movie for me haha.

Re: If someone told you their favorite movie was "____________" you'd know you hate t
Not sure why everyone is so hung up on Lost in Translation. I hang out with a lot of people who are really into film i.e. film makers, film students, etc and i rarely hear lost in translation being discussed. There are far more abstract titles that can be considered pretentious. ISH loves to discuss this movie for some reason :oldlol:

I think its just one of the more famous movies that the average person considers "indie" or "artistic". It helped launch scarlett's career, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Re: If someone told you their favorite movie was "____________" you'd know you hate them
:confusedshrug: I just had high hopes for Bill Murray 'specially since I saw his Space Jam cameo the night befo', and it wazn't what I expected. The mid-90s percentage on RT didn't reduce the hype eitha.
Not in the good way, unfortunately. Still charming, quirky, and I dug the dialogue and kerater development, but I was hoping for something else.
To be frank, I can't see how anyone can deem LiT their clear consensus fav. It juss don't make sense.

Re: If someone told you their favorite movie was "____________" you'd know you hate them
a lot of people felt that lost in translation reached a new level of intimacy, depth and subtlety of drama.
i do see why people consider it pretentious, it is very moody and there is essentially no story, but that is what allows the film to slow down and explore the characters and settings. another reason people dislike it is because it is about upper middle class people and their personal issues and they cannot relate/feel empathy for the two characters because of this.
it is held as one of the great films of recent times and is a land mark film. this is not opinion. it is that way.
it is also one of my favorite films of all time.
note how i stop short of saying it is one of the greatest films of all time? imo it is, but i would never claim this as fact as it is certainly highly debatable.

I thought Lost in Translation was highly overrated, but I wouldn't call it a pile of steaming sh!t. Yeah, the point of the movie seemed to be to bore the audience, and sure, it's not profound, deep, nor groundbreaking, but it wasn't that bad.

thats interesting seeing as how among the people on this board who know about film respect my opinion highly, even thoe i have had big disagreements with several of them in the past. lost in translation is considered a great film by the film world, nataurally a waste of of sperm like you doesnt understand it, that just stands to reason. uncultured people need to attack people with superiour appreciation to try and feel less pitiful cause theyre taste is shameful and they know it. i explained objectively about lost in translation and also stated my personal stand point. i respect jackass taste and his reasoning not to like it. you are just an idiot who no one respects.
I'm annoyed by people who absolutely hate and love lost in translation.
having spent a lot of time as a whitey in Asia I find Lost in Translation (I've watched it twice) to be quite, meh.
Bill Murray has been fabulous in movies as a morbid middle aged man(Lost in Translation, Rushmore etc...) and Scarlett is easy on the eyes while doing her moody bit admirably, but outside of that the movie lacks substantive depth.
When I watch it, all I could think about was that the writer/director never spent a lot of time in Asia and their observations are very simple, basic and irrelevant to anyone who has spent time there. Maybe that was the angle because Bill and Scarlett were noobs, but to me it could have been done so much better.
