Re: Do people believe Kobe's personality is contrived?
No question about it.
It seems almost silly at times.
Its not even a case of "is Kobe trying too hard?", because he IS trying too hard, and only a noob wouldn't see this.
Hell.... even KPAH (Alphawolf) has mentioned this numerous times, and he's the no.1 Kobe stan on the planet!!
I think this is part of why many people dislike him and Bron is following his footsteps.
But to be fair to Kobe.... this is the norm in this generation.
I think that was a perfect spot for the word noob. I wish noob got more airtime on sports shows. "THE LAKERS ARE TAKING THE RING, ONLY A NOOB WOULD DISAGREE."
But, that aside... I don't think he tries too hard any more. You gotta realize what it's like. Look at people like Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan. When you are thrust into the spotlight at a young age you develop a fake personality to cope... and it's built on what you think people want from you. But I don't see Kobe as a 30 year old man trying to be anything but himself. I think that part is over.

Re: Do people believe Kobe's personality is contrived?
I believe people try to say Kobe copies MJ, so they can prop up MJ.
That is not the case because Kobe has his own style.
It's pathetic how people try to hype up Jordan, long after he's retired, by saying Kobe copies him.
How come nobody is saying OJ Mayo is copying Jordan or Lebron or Wade? People want to take the best player today, Kobe, and compare him to Jordan, therefore, they can say MJ is better because Kobe copied him.
It's like saying Ferrari is copying BMW.
-
Re: Do people believe Kobe's personality is contrived?
If Kobe wanted to be MJ, he would have murdered his father.
-
Re: Do people believe Kobe's personality is contrived?
His scowl shit and I'm so serious at playoffs press conferences are clearly inventions of his and not his personality. You don't just start gerbil-facing more than a decade into your career act act all hard all of a sudden. Fake. Fake. Fake.

At this point, there is nothing anyone could do to really hype or prop up Jordan. We all know what most believe he is. We all know the benchmark he set. People gotta realize that if you are comparing someone to MJ that they are large shoes to fill.....very large.
No one talks about OJ because he doesn't mimic Jordan. Neither does LeBron or Wade. Sure, OJ may have a similar jumpshot or Wade may play like an early MJ but that's about it. With Kobe, you seen the on the court skills AND mannerisms. Everything seems to forced.
I find it funny that people are getting offended over this and coming to defend Kobe. Stop it. No one is denying his talent or that he's a legend so what gives? What this article is saying isn't hard to see.

Re: Do people believe Kobe's personality is contrived?
Kobe's personality is contrived? Is that all you've got? That's just a lame criticism that by design is impossible to prove or disprove. Kobe is intense during the playoffs. He scowls and talks trash, big f**king deal. I think Kobe singled out Battier because much was being made by the announcers about Battier's "hand in the face" defense on Kobe. It's not that hard to figure out.
Haters must be out of legitmate complaints about Kobe so they start in on this bullsh*t. Nice try douchebags.

Christ just let him do what he does, only non Laker fans care about this because it's only things like this they have left when it comes to criticizing him. He has become a complete player, the player Laker fans always hoped he'd become.

Yep the only logical post in this entire thread. I mean really in today's media where every little thing you do can be overblown its best to control as much as possible. So Kobe isn't beloved? Does this stuff really matter? He has 5 rings(and counting) and that's all that matters when his career winds down.
I mean people loved Michael Jordan but I have always hated his ass can't please everyone:confusedshrug:
Just got finished watching 1st and 10 and they have a football player (not sure what his name is) debating with Skip Bayless... the topic at hand was 'most hated athletes', based off the recent "Q" ratings . The two talked about LeBron, Chad Johnson, T.O etc, but when Kobe's name was mentioned, the football player immediately expressed his dislike for Kobe. "The scowl, the tough guy act, everything seems so contrived and phony it's no wonder he's on that list" (paraphrasing here). Skip pretty much agreed and that was that. Not really defensive.
My negativity was directed towards the article, not the poster.
It's just funny the perception of things depending on the side you're on. I remember the game vs the Rockets when he yelled at Collins, and while this guy is sitting there nit picking "umf why is Kobe yelling at Doug", I thought "YES Kobe is in the fking zone, no way we're getting beat tonight!"
Point is that only someone else than Laker fans would think about this in a negative way, and Kobe shouldn't be worried about that.

Leave the scowl at home, Kobe
By Tim Keown
Page 2
"He can't guard me," Bryant said. Shaking his head, his mouth curled downward in a semicircle of disgust, he stared down Collins and said it again, "He can't guard me."
There was a pause on the broadcast. OK, that was meant for us, you could almost hear them thinking. So ... what do we say now? They couldn't ignore it, because it was clear to everyone watching that they were taken aback and that Kobe was the reason. Kevin Harlan acknowledged that Kobe was targeting Collins, one of the most even and knowledgeable minds in the game. When Harlan asked his partner what it was all about, Collins sounded genuinely perplexed. "I'm not sure," he said, and they quickly and quietly moved on.
Not really, MJ was an a**hole, but it wasn't contrived - just who he is. He wasn't imitating or copying anyone. I don't like him but at least he's genuine and didn't care what people thought.
BTW, there are other athletes (like Federer and Nadal) who are in the spotlight too and are real down to earth guys - no contriving at all. I think part of it is being secure enough in who you are and having people around you that you trust.

Who says it's a flaw?
I think people are trying to point out little stupid things about him, just to be famous.
-
Re: Do people believe Kobe's personality is contrived?
Most athletes and overall famous people do tend to think of themselves as "Famous Me" and "Me."
It's like how Magic Johnson always said there's "Magic" and then there's "Erving or Buck." You can see that in LeBron now. He clearly separates "LeBron James" and himself.
Kobe's going to have the same kind of persona. You'd have to. There'd be no way to stay sane.

Re: Do people believe Kobe's personality is contrived?
This thread is the ultimate example of the obnoxious, ridiculous Kobe fanatic.
catch24 (who is a Laker/Kobe fan by the way) made a thread asking a question regarding Bryant.
What do these Bryant fanatics do? Bring up Lebron, bring up Jordan, insult posters who attempt to ANSWER THE QUESTION THE OP POSED. This has NOTHING TO DO with the original topic of this thread.
It just goes to show you how personally attached they are to Kobe Bryant. If you don't like the topic of the thread, you could just ignore it. But this is a thread about people's opinions about Bryant. A lot of people think his personality is contrived. But these people get all insulted as if you attacked their family member because you ANSWERED THE OP.

Re: Do people believe Kobe's personality is contrived?
I'm surprised this thread has went 8 pages and no one has mentioned the whole 2010 Finals. The Chris Rock thing, the press conferences where he was mostly silent but "focused" and "intense" at the same time, the indifference towards the history of the Celtics/Lakers rivalry, etc. Thats a perfect example of what I think this thread is about and how much Kobe tries to overdo it so much.
Then of course there's the copying of Jordan. Then there's the what seems like forced camaraderie he has with his teammates, although I will say I don't think it was nearly as bad this year as it was the previous two.
I think this is the biggest reason why alot of people are so turned off him. Dude just seems really fake.
