Re: Basketball Diary
anyone else notice that being athletic is a very important part of being a good basketball player? i've been playing pickup recently, and i always run with the same group of guys. we practice our skills minimally, but we regularly hit the weights and are strong and fast. all of us can dunk(i can only dunk off an oop)
well anyway, we always play against average joes that practice their skills like crazy. they're a lot better then us at ball skills, but when it comes to game time they can't even compete with us.
Not true, I watched a game of old filo ballers take it to this young athletic black team. The filo dudes lost in the end due to stamina. But to say they couldn't hang would be a lie.
Being athletic is a major advantage though, i'll give you that. But when your older and your athleticism fades, that average joe who practiced proper fundamentals and drills will be 10 x better. See Tim Duncan.

Re: Basketball Diary
Went to my boys college over the weekend to chill and whatever. Played ball Saturday. Dudes have that stupid "everything is a one rule" at his college courts. Whatever. I'm playing with four of my friends, one doesn't play ball, at all. Two can't shoot but can rebound decent and the other is a stand in the corner and hit the occasional open 3 type of player. Going against a solid team with one real good kid.
We losing 11-7. Game to 12. I already had like 5 of our 7 points. I hit a 3, counts as a one:banghead: Hit another 3. 11-9. Friend gets a steal and hits a layup. 11-10. I pull up and hit once again a 3. 11-11. We get a huge stop, I am in complete ****ing god mode (so I think) pull up from like 4 feet behind the 3 line and...brick it :oldlol: . Thankfully we got another stop and I drove in for a layup and we won. I love being in the zone, amazing feeling.

Re: Basketball Diary
My brother played Ypsilanti Community again on Friday. The first time around, Ypsi was #3 in the state and my bro's squad only lost by seven (actually came down to the last few minutes).
This time around, Ypsi was only #7 in the state, but had grown into a seemingly unstoppable beast since their first meeting. They beat the 17th ranked team in the state by 47 a week ago. And this past Friday, they beat my brother's team (21st in the state) by 46. It was hard to even fault my brother's team. Ypsi played some of the best defense I've ever seen in person on a high school level. But man, it was ugly for our guys.
The kind of cool thing was that University of Michigan's head coach John Beilein was in attendance. I mean, sure, our school's only six miles away from campus and he most definitely wasn't there to watch my brother's team (Ypsi features Jaylen Johnson, committed to Louisville, and a sophomore guard named Corey Allen of whom Beilein was likely there to scout) but it was neat nonetheless.

Re: Basketball Diary
finished a 1 day tournament yesterday. 2 groups of 5 teams, finished 3-1, advanced into playoffs lost in semis, and won next game for the bronze.
I played alright, but my teammates sucked. They were not passing me the ball enough, as I was knocking down 3s at good rate, but 2 so called leaders played no head run and gun and finishing those at low rate. Other guy on my team, a PG, was good, and played smart ball.last dude was irrelevant.
It was 6 games of 2 halfs of 8 mins with time stopping. We had no subs so I was dead in the end.

Re: Basketball Diary
Cool thread, just bookmarking it for later.
I'm 24 and I've played since I was 10. I'm about 6'6'' and 190, I play anything from the 2-4 positions and my strengths are being both versatile/skilled offensively and very quick/mobile for my size. I play like a guard, but I'm usually just as tall as centers. My weaknesses are my defense, having a bad vertical leap and a lack of strength. The last two cause me to be a weak rebounder for my size.
Been out since september with a broken bone in my hand. Gonna start playing/practicing again this week. So excited reading your posts. :D
Gonna chip in with my own posts later if the thread is still alive:banana:

Once summer comes around, I'll play 3-4 days straight with a lot of games per day. But for the few couples weeks I'll probably be sore. Once I get my legs back, I'm good for the rest of the summer.

Re: Basketball Diary
Hey peeps,
Had our first official game of the season last night, we had my tall mate filling in, however we had our starting PF back as well from his knee soreness. So we had 7 players which is a pretty good number. We were missing our C to the Eminem concert in Melbourne and our bench forward was MIA. It also sucks cause the scoreboard wasn't working either.
I stated the game on the bench and watched our offence struggle, no where near enough ball movement, also forcing the shot way too much. Unfortunately, I've noticed the last few weeks, my brother is a chucker. He easily takes the most shots out of our team, and misses the most cause he takes tough shots. I need to find a way to get him to change his play style and get more ball movement and communication. He needs to realize his play is hurting the team, it leads to a stagnant offence as he drives and takes every shot.
Any ideas?
I came in with about 12 minutes left of the first half, the score was tied. I looked to slow it down as the only points they scored were off fast breaks. Telling my team to get at least 3 passes before any shots. Straight of the bat, bot my bro & our other guard took quick shots, this pissed me off cause it was clear the didn't listen. Halftime we were only up by 3, we should have been up by a lot, but we were making sloppy turnovers, lazy defence & our tall guys were missing every shot inside.
I reinforced the fact we want multiple passes each possession, get the ball moving and people flowing. Also for out starting PF to start playing better D, a guy half his height was blowing past him easily to the basket. The guy shouldn't even be able to see daylight with the length our PF had over him.
The difference my advice made in the second half was apparent, Our D was locked in, and many more passes were made each possession, we had the odd quick shot, but by this stage, we had there D scrambling hard they were running out of energy. We started opening fast breaks on them as I controlled the tempo. I finally took my first shot in the game with 15 minutes left in the 2nd half. Swish.
I ended the game 2-4fgs, a bunch of steals, a block and 10 + Assists. I missed a one on one layup as I'm still trying to use my right hand going left, I really need to practice my left. I also had a sweet lay up on a give & go with our fill in. The other shot I missed was an up & under were I was bumped but no call, didn't complain, just got back on D.
We ended up blowing them apart as the game finished and we held them to 2pts in 20 minutes. Those 2pts were off free throws when I committed the foul trying to block this guy from behind as our C was slow to rotate.
Although we got the win, it was clear our team needs to refocus on the passing and cutting and also more focus on Defence. We can't afford to be taking halves off.
Until next time, laters fam

I'm used to playing 4 days in a row through mon-thur (sometimes 5 if I've had a sunday game). This has a couple of times lead to having real issues with inflammation in my calfs due to all that load from playing on hard indoor surfaces. Other than that, no issues with playing 4 or 5 days in a row. :pimp:

The main thing is to remember to stretch extensively before hand. I will admit that I've been lazy at this in the past and would have aches for the next few days. But since I've started stretching prior to games (and I mean holding the stretches for longer than 15 seconds), I've been able to play more games (usually 3 per week), and play longer in those games.
Obviously part of it is conditioning as well - the more conditioned you are to it, the quicker you recover. Must say, playing in the park is no use for conditioning (if you are playing half/quarter court where you don't have to go into a full sprint).

Re: Basketball Diary
We practiced some basic pick and roll plays. and I also told them to improve our passing, 3 points shooting, and free throw shooting. we are gonna use the 2-3 zone defense, and man to man defense in the last 3 minutes of the 4th quarter if the game is closer.

I wouldn't recommend static stretching before activity like basketball. What I would do before a game is some foam roller / lacrosse ball rolling and do some specific mobility drills before my warm up. I wouldn't stay in any position longer than a couple of seconds when performing mobility drills though. I would do the passive stretching with longer stretches after the game.

Age and intensity are important factors to consider when playing consecutive days and so are diet and ability to recover. Also the overall level of physical preparedness. If you're not used to playing 3 consecutive days you're probably feel tired as hell. I am 28 years old and in good shape. I do strength training with some resistance / cardio 3-4 time a week and I can feel 2 consecutive days at high intensity takes a pretty high toll on my body.

Since I was in the area, I decided to check back in on my high school alma mater for the second time this year. They were playing in the statewide game of the week (which more or less means heavy media coverage, live blog, yadda yadda). Great home crowd, excellent atmosphere; then this happened to them, ha: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wwd6wyT2eE

Yeah, I understand what you are saying. I neglected to mention I also do a light jog first, just dribbling a ball from base line to base line as a warm up, then a few good minutes of solid stretching. And I found the stretching helped an older guy like me not have the aches and pains that a lot of the guys my age get after playing (a single game in a week too).

Re: Basketball Diary
I played in my local rec league tonight. It was a good game to play in. Admittedly we are probably a grading below where we should be, so we tend to get relatively easy wins, and I'd be surprised if we don't get graded up next season. After a slow start, integrating a new pivot, and losing a few good shooters, we've really found our stride.
The team we were up against tonight actually give us a few problems. Earlier on in the comp we had a win against them by a point, but beat them well in the next encounter. But I like the way they play. They are a smaller team, but move the rock well, find the open shooter, and their big - though smaller than all of our front line - plays BIG.
We were a bit sluggish to start but at the half we were up 6. Keep in mind that we are usually pushing 20 pt leads on most teams, the game tends to become a bit sluggish on both sides following the half - us with a comfortable lead, the opposition facing a tough deficit (some teams you can even sense the feeling of defeat at this point, whereupon it becomes a chuckfest from 3).
I stressed to our guys the need to defend well and box out. We switched our usual 2-3 zone to a 3-2, with an emphasis on stopping their speedy point. And it worked well, disrupted the way they like to play 3 high and just keep moving to the weak side where they can usually catch one of our guys along the base not coming out quick enough for an open j (and to their credit, they hit at a reasonable clip to give themselves a chance at winning).
We managed to push the lead to 12, getting some easy buckets in transition, and moving the ball well inside (if there is one advantage we had, it was our size and our movement cutting). We ended up with an 8 point win, but it was good to be pushed (previous weeks score was a 46-9 scoreline).
I feel I had a pretty decent game - running the point I try to focus on keeping down turnovers and find my teammates in spots they have the best chance of scoring from. I had 6 points, 2 floaters scything into the center of the zone, and sunk my 2 foul attempts (which I've been working really hard at - probably sitting around 50%, but it's hard to find a rhythm when you only shoot maybe 2 every game). My jumper hasn't been great lately, but I've been shooting it way less - that's something I'd like to improve, but as I'm running the point this season I tend to find myself at the top of the key rather than on the wing where I usually like to catch-and-shoot from. But it's working for the team and we are playing well, and are balanced on offense so I'm not complaining (I'm gonna make it a priority to get up a few more straight on 17-19 footers.

That's great, I'm happy to hear you feel no pain playing.
You should definitely do warm ups and stretching, I would only advise against static stretching, where you would stay in position for a longer time for a simple reason. This type of stretching reduces your muscle strength and would therefore more likely lead to injuries. It also takes away some of the explosiveness in your muscles, but the percentage is small (3-5%), so it's not an issue from a performance point unless you're very serious about it.
http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fitness/archive/2013/04/19/pre-workout-stretching.aspx
Anyway, if your previous routine worked, you don't have to change anything. But it wouldn't hurt to try changing some of the static stretching for dynamic ones - let's say you perform a 5 reps per leg set of forward lunges with a slight hold at the bottom position instead of holding a static lunge for a longer period of time. Then after you see how your body responds. Do the stretching where you hold your stretches for longer period of time after you're finished with basketball. It should help with your recovery and relieve some soreness if you experience any.
Good luck!

Re: Basketball Diary
Hey Ish Fam, Time for my latest update.
Had a bye this week for my normal social league game, so instead I opted to go play a few hours of pick up at one of the best courts around my area.
We had 16 or so people which is a pretty good number, 10 minute games, 3 teams, you win, you stay on. however you can only stay on twice in a row. Keeps the games competitive.
I came out good, hit my first shot clean, however I didn't really get to touch the ball again in a scoring position, this seemed like a bit of a theme over the whole night. I don't know if it's me being in the wrong spot, or my team mates just not passing it my way.
Which was a bit bizarre as over the course of the night, I was hitting almost everything and was also coming up with lots of positive plays for the team.
Offensive rebounds, big defensive boards, clean steals and boxing out.
The most memorable moments of the night came in the later games.
Had a 2 on 1 fast break, my team mate had the ball, he drew the D but threw the pass way late, I managed to secure it after it was tipped about 10ft from the ring, I pump faked which threw the first defender off, drove past him and stepped back only to throw another watching the next defender fly past, did a little step under and up and in. Just a nice little sequence.
Then the next was in the last game, was iso'd on D against the best player, he crossed as I read it perfectly and tapped the ball out back up the court, I ripped past him and collected my dribble. Their C, a really tall lanky guy got back on D at the free throw, I drove to my right, hesitated, to which he stepped forward slightly, which timed my drive past him perfectly to finish with the right handed finger roll.
I also had numerous mid range J's in dudes faces that got some smack talking from the team on the sideline, I rarely talk shit so I just stay quite. All in all it was a good night, and I really feel like I'm hitting my grove lately.
My knees on the other hand were aching after that, and are still a little bit tender today, I should be good to go by tomorrow for my weekly Saturday ball.
Can't wait.
Laters fellas

Re: Basketball Diary
March Madness struck early for my little brother tonight. They coughed up a 13 point second half lead and were upset by a single point in the first round of districts tonight. My bro missed a tough tip-in at the buzzer.
After peaking at 10-1 and a top 20 Class A state ranking, they finished up at 14-7. To add insult to injury, they were hosting districts on their home floor. If it's any consolation, they lost to a team tonight who stands at 12-9, the worst record of any team that beat my brother's team this year. Bad they took their worst loss tonight, but they had themselves one of the toughest conferences in the state and had an impressive year considering.
Still, bowing out like this is tough. Brother is bummed. I do not think he wants to play college ball, so basketball is over. He's struggling to come to terms with that. I know the feeling.

Re: Basketball Diary
Got my first good run in this week after a looong break from basketball. I got super winded 5 minutes into the game but I felt find after getting my 2nd wind. Played pretty badly all night because there was just too much rust to overcome.
The first dribble I took of the night was coming around a pick at the wing. I took a hard bounce with my right hand and wanted to turn the corner but the ball never met my hand on the way up. :oldlol: I pretty much committed to 1 or 2 dribbles in the half court after that until I can feel comfortable with the ball again.
The touch on my shot was really poor too. At the beginning it was just coming too soft off my fingers resulting in everything being short. I got a bit better as the night went on but the best I could do was a couple in and outs. That will come back though as I have always had a nice shot.
Ended up getting going a little bit at the end because I was able to get to the rim. Beat my man on a couple back door cuts and got out in transition for some easy lay-ups. I blew by my man baseline on one possession and had a really juice dunk opportunity but I passed it up because I'm not confident I can throw that one down yet.
I've probably added 10 lbs of muscle since I last played tho and I noticed my finishing around the rim is miles better. I had a couple really nice and-1s where I was able to absorb contact pretty easily.

Re: Basketball Diary
Peeps ma sqweets,
Latest update, Had our next game on Tuesday night. We were against one of the teams we versed in grading, however they had 2 more guys this time.
We started horribly, I was playing decent though. Reffing wasn't bad, but not the best. They missed calls either way, but it was consistent.
Our bigs are just to slow to react and also lazy which led to a lot of points being scored on backdoor cuts.
Then when we adjusted and stayed locked in in the paint, they were hitting shots they never make... We finished the first half down 15.
Same story through the first 12 minutes of the second half, still about 15 down.
This is where things changed though, my team was getting frustrated, starting to take little digs at each other. I could see why though, I was feeling the same but tried to keep everyone positive and working together.
I'm normally a very unselfish player. I had only taken 2 shots in the first half, hit 1 on a shot clock beater.
My team was pissing me off, their team was pissing me off. So the very next possession, I had the ball at the 3, just off centre. I had one guy facing me on D, threw a couple crosses and stepped forward. He dropped back behind the free throw, I had been blowing past him all game so he was giving me space. This time I rose for a J straight in his face, SWISH.
As we headed back on D, they pushed the pace, (Our bigs love to have a chat as they JOG back, which shits me off) they got caught sleeping as I made the stop and got the rebound.
Bring the ball up the floor, same spot as before, I had the same guy D'ing me. This time I went left to right cross over, then a step back right, pulled up again as he closed out. SWISH again.
This time I blasted our bigs yelling to get back on D, we got another stop.
I demanded the ball, had it, same spot again. This time I threw a sham god dribble left, followed by going between my legs Iverson step back. Pulled up again, SWISH. Followed by a time out call at 4 minutes left.
Now the lead was down to 9. I tried to booster my teams energy and confidence. When we came back out on the floor, we had another stop. I got the ball again. This time the D went for a box and 1 floater, their best defender on me. I knew I could take him. However.... Our friggen bigs were so idotic, setting useless half assed screens that I didn't even need. I was telling them to clear out, as soon as one cleared out, another came to set a screen :facepalm I couldn't beat the dude like this, as the screens were so stupid they took up room I could of used to operate and get by the defender.
I could hear my bro on the bench telling them to clear, feed the hot hand, but nothing... Next thing, shot clock was getting low, I spotted one of our bigs inside, threw a perfect blazing pass, caught him sleeping out of bounds. It was pretty much game at that point.. So deflating, but those series of plays before that were a huge confidence booster. I'm going to start looking for my shot more often.
We have really been struggling with line ups that work and game plans with the personal and skills we have. Hopefully over the next few weeks we can find something that works. I'm hoping to hit our stride by mid-season. At the moment, a lot of the guys on the team try and jam the ball inside to our bigs, neither of which can seal his man leading to lots of TO's. Also neither can finish strong.
One always turns around and throws it over his head, missing of course. And the other shoots flat footed from his waist, that in pick up games when I've been against him, I've stuffed his shot multiple times.. They really need to lift there game if we are going to be successful.
Got 3 hrs of pick up games this afternoon, so we'll see how we go.

Re: Basketball Diary
We practiced yesterday. We improved our team defense. My team is planning to play some zone defense, and man to man defense if the game is closer in the 4th quarter.
I just came back from the basketball court. We won a 2 back to back 5 on 5 games.
Next week is the start of the basketball tournament. (March 22 to May 31, 2014).

Kobe style shot attempts. :lol :lol :lol It's a different court. It was an out door court, and the court is roughed road. That's why few people played basketball in that place.

Re: Basketball Diary
Played again last night. Still can't hit a ****ing jumper to save my life. The touch on my jumper used to be my calling card and now it is completely gone. At this point its been so long that I'm aiming the ball instead of shooting it. I think I need to just hit up a court solo and get shots up.
I stuck to the team utility role because my shooting is so bad. I got plenty of rebounds and got easy buckets from rolling to the rim on screens and making decent cuts. I kind of surprised myself again with how much stronger I've gotten. I made a really difficult and-1 with my left hand and cleared out space in the post with a well placed shoulder that surprised me so much that I almost missed the lay-up.
We ended up running the court for about an hour and a half. I was beat and holy shit do I have two huge blisters on my feet. It got so bad with the blisters that I was pissed we played a bad team our 2nd to last game because I knew we were going to win and stay on. I almost quit after that one but my friends guilt tripped me into playing 1 more. Huge mistake. I could barely get up and down. My only goal was to play solid defense and be a decoy on offense.

Re: Basketball Diary
I scored plenty of points and assists today, and 4 steals. Our team won 32 to 30. Race to 16 per half.

Re: Basketball Diary
On Monday I went to a gym with a friend that someone he knew rented, there were 15 guys there so we played 5 on 5 full court, first time in a long time to play that kinda full court for me running up and down it killed me, and first time playing basketball in a month since my brother sprained his ankle grade 3 with tears and just under a month before his wedding, mom was pissed, but Monday we were playing if you win three in a row your team sits a game, that night my team went 6 and 0, it felt good, I played all right, although my shoes kept slipping on the court, in the first game we played I went to drive along the baseline got passed my man, and one of his team mates a friend of mine, put his hand out to go for the ball and throat chopped me, I finished the lay in still  It was fun and i'm still kinda sore from it but it was fun to run up and down the court for that long, and in I think the fourth game the game was tied we were playing either first to 11 or who is ever in the lead after 8 minutes, one of my teammates blew his assignment with about 15 seconds left and so the games tied at like 9, so he takes the ball up, and goes hero ball gets trapped and instead of passing he shoots it, but our bigman who was around 6' 4 6' 5 was able to get the rebound and tip it in.
-
Re: Basketball Diary
Gym was PACKED last night so I only got one run in. Normally I would be pissed about only getting one game in but the dudes their last night were obnoxious to the point that I was glad to simply play and leave. Massive amount of petty squabbles, horrible fouls, etc.
Anyway, my jumper is finally back. I hit a couple corner 3's in warm-ups because I was able to work out some mechanical issues with my shot. My two main problems were that the ball wasn't coming off my finger tips correctly and I wasn't stepping into my shot. Two rookie mistakes on easy fundamentals but they were easy to work out. Our game started and I immediately hit a transition 3 and it felt great. Our team played really well. We had great ball movement working the ball through the high post and everyone was sharp.
I got ****ing worked on defense tho. Some dude who says he used to play in Europe showed up to the gym with his son and their team ran the court all night. I guarded the old pro and he seriously torched me. Good first step, strong, and he had a great jumper. Plus he was a lefty which can be weird to adjust to when you've been sitting for the past 30 mins watching pick-up games. Anyway, i contested his shot fairly well and tried to body him on his drives but he was just finishing over me. Normally I wouldn't be guarding him because my roommate is a much better on ball defender while I excel at help side D but I could tell he wasn't feeling it so I offered to guard the guy.

Re: Basketball Diary
Hey Ish fam,
Thought I would update you all, We've been having a tough time with our rec league, scrapped together a couple wins but also a lot of losses, loosing winnable games as well.
I'm making a new commitment this week which is too play less minutes but play a lot harder during those minutes, One of the guys sisters has actually started recording the games, and then she uploads it to the net and also breaks down the stats onto a spread sheet.
One of our bigs was 1-30 on the last 3 games which was a bit worrying, especially since he's shooting from the 5-8ft range. I'm shooting 7-17 on the past 3 games, around 41% for the season.
It really interesting to see where we are lacking individually and as a team. One of the guys has also done up a plan for the sub rotations and also a basic offensive & defensive approach, so Hopefully things will start looking up.

Went and player basketball last night, got to play in seven games of 5 v 5, went 5-2 in those games, I think I played well overall, I more effort on defense than I did on offense, I had a couple good plays, one of them was blocking the jumpshot of my brother in law who is 6'6, I also blocked a three point attempt of a kid who I'd guess is about 5'8, 5'9, I had one really good offensive game, I just couldn't miss my layups no matter what so I scored like 5 points that game, overall just played good defense and didn't do much on offense, was way tired after the game trying to go to sleep my legs were actually hurting from running the court so much.

Re: Basketball Diary
Also forgot to mention there was a play I had as the defense on fastbreak, there is this guy I play with he's about 5'7 and when he's going towards the rim he always lowers the shoulder and shoves you, but on the fastbreak he tried to do that on me, and I have long arms so I just smacked the ball as he was going up for it for a nice block.

Re: Basketball Diary
We played 3 on 3 basketball, and we won. We lost in a 5 on 5 game the score is 20-19. I think I scored 6 points ( 5 layups, and 1 jumper).
