Many teams tank every year and have for a long time. Ainge built two champions doing it. Okc are champs now after doing it
Of course but where was this logic when Sixers did it? Everyone was up in arms, getting on their soap box talking integrity of the league blah blah blah. The nba forced Hinkie out by having the Colangelos take over. And they ruined things. Go figure.
No he didn’t. He drafted solid. Took BPA every time.
Noel, Okafor, and MCW were busts and not given any proper development program. That was another knock on him. Draft and/or acquire players and if they aren't an immediate hit, trade them off. Why avoid having any veterans who can actually teach and mentor these guys? :confusedshrug:
He operated like someone who was a gambler rather than a tactician executing a plan over a specific timeline.

You forgot fultz. That was certainly a difference there. You need a mix of vets and kids. Easier to lose with kids but no one to show them the way

He drafted Fultz and gave it up to Danny Ainge. He traded Jerami Grant and Noel. He had his wife created twitter accounts bashing players and front office folks (Hinkie was one). He was a stooge. Embiid even with all his injuries has done more for the Sixers than him. F*ck him, should’ve left Hinkie alone to continue his process. Whether it worked or failed

MCW was a bust? He won ROY and for Sixers a lottery pick via trade. Which was Mikel Bridges. But for some odd reason we traded Bridges.
Noel was a stiff
Okafor was BPA. Hindsight yeah he ended up a bust. At the time? It was the BPA. Not mad at it. Just mad he got hurt where Sixers couldn’t take advantage of his value and flip him.
Hinkie did solid drafting.

Okafor bpa if it was 1990. Like mcw and fultz they didnt have modern games. Noel fit todays game more than them. Turning down all that cash though!

That trade saves them like $20M. MPJ is a little better and more versatile, but, I think it is a good move as long as the 1st has protection.

You can’t change history. Okafor was by far the best player at 3. He was the projected #1 at the start of college. You’re speaking from a hindsight perspective. At the time every mock, every draft pundit/analyst, most nba teams had Okafor the consensus 3rd overall pick. Saying everyone was wrong is pure hindsight. lol that’s not that that works. The answer to my question was Okafor. He was the BPA. Hinkie took the BPA.
The fact you can’t name who was the BPA at 3 during that draft just proves my point.
Ave Bailey was the BPA for Utah. What he does in his career doesn’t debunk that. See how that works? lol

Bailey has a modern skillset.
Okafor didnt. Not the same. Hinkie obviously was thinking in the past. Most of those guys didnt have modern skillsets

LeVert going to the Pistons makes me feel like they're anticipating Beasley getting suspended which means they definitely won't bring him back. They were in the middle of his contract talks and that stalled when the gambling investigation came out.

Nuggets could care less about a 1st rounder that's likely beyond the Jokic window, Cam should be a better fit for Denver. Great gamble for the Nets though.

They're talking to Mike Brown. How do you talk to a coach at this point to convince him you want him when you tried to talk to 5 other coaches beforehand and got turned down.
"Well you were our sixth choice, but here's a lot of money to convince you to come here."

That’s not how BPA works.
Okafor avg 17ppg 7rpg as a rookie. Not bad for a slow footed back to basket, outdated game.

How is that any different than interviewing several candidates before making your eventual choice?

Re: 2025 NBA Free Agency Discussion
How is that any different than interviewing several candidates before making your eventual choice?
Interviewees usually come in voluntarily for a job. You interview several that walk-in and choose based off what is best in front of you. You have no choice who walks through that door.
In this case it's different. None of the Knicks first attempts were with coaches that were unsigned. They were requesting to speak with several coaches that were still already working for other teams. Meaning they had in mind who they wanted to talk to first at the minimum and who was on their radar.
I get that you'll interview several coaches, but most of the time there's a slew of coaches who are unsigned and not working. The Knicks first several attempts were with coaches who were signed. Let's say a team is interested in Phil Jackson in his prime and Mike Brown. Both of those coaches are still under contract with other teams. You don't go request to talk to Mike Brown before you talk to Phil Jackson. You request to talk to Jackson because he's your first choice and if the team allows you to interview him and you can sign him you won't even need an interview with Brown.

I'm not saying it definitely won't happen but any GM that trades a first round pick to pay 40mil per for a 3-and-no-D roleplayer is crazy.
