Re: Your high school sports resume
Actually playing, varsity soccer, but I quit because I didn't want to go to practice 5/6 days a week and the team was complaining that I was too aggressive (Which I am extremely aggressive when playing sports, but I don't mind others doing the same. I think it makes it more fun) and I pretty much called the team out when the coaches talked to me about the team complaining. I don't want to be on a team with a bunch of pansies. Other than that, I didn't do other sports for the school. Before 9th grade, I went to basketball camp and I was one of the 6 freshman that they were thinking of taking for JV, but I never tried out that year. Then sophomore year, I went to try out, but didn't make it as I only made it to the second-day of tryouts because I needed a new physical. (With those sports, especially basketball/football, they already have their teams picked out during summer, so I should have tried out freshmen year, or at the very least, go to camp summer before junior year and then try out). The guys on the football team always tried to get me to play football, but the team was scrub, like real scrub. My freshman year, they were good, almost made state (one round away, I believe), but after that, they sucked. 6 or 7 wins total in the next 3 seasons. I also considered doing weight-lifting, but I don't like working out 5 days a week and being told how to work out (Though I am always open to and like helpful suggestions).
Re: Your high school sports resume
Bench warmer for Freshman soccer team
Roleplayer for JV soccer team sophomore year
Cut in december junior year
That's my resume. (For the record, our team went to start three years in a row. And you've seen me guys, I'm not big or fast. All I got is skill and knowledge of the game.) If in shape, I have no problem keeping up with these guys in pick up soccer games.
Re: Your high school sports resume
basketball:
every year grade 9 thru 12
grade 9: backup center: was pretty good all year, good shot blocker/rebounder off the bench. finished as 8th seed and I was best player in our like 60-20 playoff loss :lol if that counts for anything
grade 10: starting center: probably averaged like 8 points 10 rebounds and a lot of blocks. I literally took like 5 shots a game, defense was my game.
grade 11: backup center again: wasnt used much this year as we allow players to return for a 5th year. saw spot minutes defending other big dudes.
grade 12: backup center: played solid minutes, shot a lot more when I came in, solid defense.
volleyball: one year in grade 10: did decent I think for someone who had never played before (havent played since), Im so tall even with my limited hops I could still block and hit pretty good.
baseball: grade 11 and 12: the team's first year was my first year lol, we didn't win a game in either year, pitiful. I was like lyle overbay, good defense but I couldnt really hit. Doubles randomly just like LYLE.
tennis: every year: played doubles, usually came in like 5th or 6th in the city. I was average.
football: grade 10: starting left tackle: team lost every game, I was one of 2 lineman who could hold a block for more than half a second lol. this year I would get overpowered a lot some farm boys from the outskirt schools in grade 13 would plow me lol, happy to know it was their last year.
grade 11: starting left tackle and defensive tackle: team barely had enough players so had to do double duty, also played on kick return lol but lots of players did similar things so I couldnt complain. we almost won a game this year, I did my job.
grade 12: left TACKLE: was fun, I think kids are getting smaller generation after generation lol, we won 1 game finally, cant remember why but for some reason there was a facebook group for this game and some players from both sides talked shit back and fourth, we won something like 30-28. tbh I manhandled their defensive end all game as did our center and left guard lol like the vikings but we had retards playing on the right side of the line so ruined it. fun times tho.
What were your open 400 and 800 times?
And 17:32 is a pretty damn good 5k.
400 was 50.3
800 was 2:08 i think, i only ran it a couple times in teh meets, one just happened to be at regionals to qualify for state... i did not like the 800 at all.

Most runners either love or hate the 800m. It's almost short enough where you can sprint the entire two laps, but not quite short enough, and it's just long enough where you have to pace yourself and save your kick. It's a tough demanding race.
Re: Your high school sports resume
i really thought there would be more basketball players on this site
Same here. Out of any given number of posters, I figured 95% of them would have extensive basketball backgrounds. Interesting.
In my own regard, I played JV as a Freshman then started on our Varsity squad for each successive year of high school (Sophomore, Junior, Senior). Due to an extraordinary school-wide shortage of tall basketball players when my class came through, I was our club's starting power forward at 6'3''. For a bit of perspective (and perhaps clarity) I played for a Class B school in Michigan; out of four classes, B is the second largest.
At my peak I averaged 14ppg and 7rpg. Believe it or not, a 14ppg average was enough to fall in the top ten of that category within conference. During high school contests, I played a relatively simple and straightforward game, in sharp contrast to any other time I played ball. I was reluctant to shoot jump shots (never hitting over 30% of my threes for a season) and scored most of my points via layup or free throw. As a result, in my peak season I shot 50% from the field and 88% from the free throw line (on well over 100 attempts). I liked to think I just maximized opportunity.
I was unanimously named (along with a coach and two other unanimous teammates) to the All-Conference First team one season, All-Conference 2nd team another season, and then the All-County team in addition. My junior year, our starting five scored 90% of our teams' points and went three months without losing a game before bowing out in the playoffs to our conference rival and eventual State Semi-finalist.
Career Highs:
Points - 26
Rebounds - 15
3PM - 2
Once made 39/40 free throws over a stretch of season
Career Assists - 42 (I'll do the math, that's .68 apg)
Career Blocks - 14. . .as a three year starting power forward (.22)
One Dunk
And yes, I have all my statistics on file, I'm not just pulling all this from my head. . .it's a slow Friday.
Re: Your high school sports resume
I was a hell of a baseball player.

i think the 400 was tougher....
an 800 was tough too but not as physically demanding as the 400.....
basically the 800 was a 400 with an slightly faster warm up jog first lap
the 400 was pretty much a sprint for the whole lap
Re: Your high school sports resume
I wasnt very athletic at all in middle school on till about midway through my junior year of highschool, but I just kept working and eventually got better then most of the more talented guys who didnt work as hard as me. That has always been my line for the most part and is the one real thing I take away from my highschool athletic career. To the breakdown:
Football: My first love, played from middle school to the end of my sophmore year. Basically I played because I was very quiet but I got friends this way and thats really the only reason I stayed as long as I did. I was a two way starter as an offensive tackle and a nose tackle or end and was mostly better on defense then offense because I cared more about my defense. My best game was against our cross town rival on JV my soph year and was also the game that made me decide it just wasnt worth it. I had 8 tackles for loss and a few more besides and we still got blown out by 21 points. I just burned out after that and after I went to all the previous early morning workouts the sophmore/freshman year so I could be a tight end and at the end of it all they told me they never planned on giving me a shot. I didnt come back my junior year for varsity and instead did what any redblooded american boy would do and...
Cross-Country: Yep, I joined cross country my junior year to hang out with the beautiful females on the team. I naturally assumed I would be really good since I was good at football and getting more athletic. Lets just say I was very very wrong :oldlol: My first ever 5K I ran was a 24:45 while we had some guys I had previously considerd nerds (still were, but besides the point...) were coming in at 18-17 minute range. The fastest I ever ran was my senior year at the last race in districts where I couldnt break 20 minutes by 23 seconds. Coach still letterd me as a thank you for coming out and being on the team.
-Quick Note: my roomates in college right now agree that I would have continued to be a two way and two year starter on varsity football had I kept at it. I believe I could have been very good at least. I ran only 3 races on varsity in JV but still feel looking back that this was the best switch ive ever made in my life.
Basketball: I feel that I gotta bring up middleschool again to show how far I really came. I made the C team in 7th grade and it was by no means a mistake. I worked and worked and worked in the offseason and the head coach as an 8th grader for the A team pulled me up when looking back im still not exactly sure why he did. I think he saw potential, but ive never asked him and should. I still have the schedule where I put my points each game and believe me, it wasnt pretty... 0, 0, 7, 4, 2, 0, 5 and 0 for the regular season. However, playoffs I stepped up or got lucky and scored 10, 9 and 14 points to win the district championship that year. If I didnt have that confidence from that year I doubt I would have continued to work has hard as I did in basketball. The highschool varsity team won state that year.
Now finally, into highschool I made freshman team first and it pissed me off cause I felt I was better then that. They told me that if I did great on freshman then they would pull me up tho, so I worked hard and for the first 10 or so games I averaged over 14 points per. They sent down one of the guys who made sophmore and he tried to take over the team and took alot out of me as far as something to prove because by then it was clear that I was stuck here for the season and my numbers dipped to the end of the season right to at 10 points a game and a firstround exit in our district tournament in a very bad beat. Our varsity won state that year in a 25-1 campaign.
As a sophmore I was very motivated to prove people wrong and the best thing that could have ever happend to me came about in my 8th grade coach getting moved up to JV. He knew what I was capable of or at least enough that he brought me up to JV where to be honest I really didnt do too well. I struggled because I was timid and because my older teammates didnt give me a break, I only averaged around 4 points a game and a few rebounds tho I dont have accurate stats. I was an important cog of the team tho in what I provided in intangibles and hustle and we ended up winning the district championship in which I had another great postseason surge in numbers. The varsity made it to the state championship game but lost that year.
As a junior on varsity I continued as a minor role player who would occasionally step up and have a big game with 4 games scoring 10 points or more. My 8th grade and then JV coach got the nod for the top varsity job right when the year started so I was given the wonderful opportunity to work with a guy who believed in me and I had a connection with for four years of my basketball career. I felt like I was an even more important piece to the team and I continued to work hard in the weight room and on the court and by the end of the season it was apparent looking back that I was really starting to surpass the starters and most of the seniors as a basketball player. We won districts that year after losing our first 4 games of the season and went to state where we won our first game and then lost our next two for a 5th place finish at state with a record of 19-8. I averaged 5.5 points a game and 4 rebounds as well as 2 turnovers a game with a highscoring game of 15 points.
As a senior it was clear to me in the offseason that this was my time. I would split time with two other quality bigmen but played a different kind of bigman role that would be needed. We had a current class of 2011 D1 commit to Gonzaga running the point for us and all around we ran 6-7 deep without any dropoff in talent where we started the year as the number 1 team in the state at any division. I was one of three team captains and was definately the quiet one who when I spoke you listend and if I felt you were not working hard enough you got an earfull as I had established myself as a tireless worker. Im not making more of myself then what it was, it was just the perception of everyone who knew me and it has followed me to college ball now. In our last preseason game I felt a bit of a tear and rip in my lower abdomen which turned out to be a double hernia... I played the entire season anyway. I needed some soul searching early in the season with my first two games scoring only 6 and 4 points, but after that I started to roll and so did the team. We cruised through the regular season to 20-0 record where we then kicked ass in districts and won the district title for the 5th straight year as a varsity team.
Going into state we played our first game to a double overtime win by 4 points where I had a double double of 10/10. The next game we won in overtime with me getting 7 in the overtime before a stinger took me out to finish with 14/9. In the state championship game I wont make excuses and just say that I was far too timid to play good basketball. I had only 2 points and 2 rebounds but I take solace in the knowledge that the guy I guarded (now one of my roommates in college) scored only 14 points off of 13 shots. It was easily the best defensive game I had ever played and we were able to pull off a third overtime game in three days to win the Idaho 4a State Championship. I was one of 6 players to average more then 8 points a game (9.5 personally) and I finished averaging 6.5 rebounds a game. That first stat is what makes me proud because we were not a team of just individuals so much as a team with lots of pretty good guys who worked great together to win it all without more then a sophmore who would prove later to be a superstar. I was named honorable mention all state and we went 26-0 my senior year and set the record for my schools all time field goal percentage at 64.3%

I got some interest at D1 but nothing substantial, no where with good academics at the D2 level either and so I settled for a private school where I took a redshirt this year so I could get healthy after my double hernia surgery that I played with and made worse during my senior year for which I only missed 2 games. Im heading off on an LDS mission sometime before next September and I dont know if ill play basketball when I get back, but I cant help but think that ive already taken away so much more then I ever would have thought from basketball that it doesnt matter if I continue with it.
Cliffs: Good at football but switched to cross country junior year, played basketball and won 5 district championships and a state championship in basketball while going undefeated my senior year in basketball as a team captain. Was never the biggest, fastest or strongest or smartest but worked harder then those who were and I feel like I came off the winner because of it.

That is a nice 400 time. I'm a freshmen right now in HS and my fastest 400 time is 56.2 and fastest 800 time is 2:18. I ran the 800 in both 7th and 8th grade track but this is my first year doing the 400. Also I think the 400 is a tougher race to run.

you must have some decent splits going if your 800 time is that good and your 400 is that bad. although there is definetly some time to improve both.
from the sounds of your times you should focus in on the 800
how is your mile time?

I shouldn't have said it so matter of factly since I never ran track. I was basing my statement on what my brother and other friends that ran track had told me. And not all of them said the 800 was tougher than the 400. I just hink more kids that I've talked to that ran both pretty regularly told me they thought the 800 was the toughest race. As demanding as the 1600m and 3200m are, though, Alost everyone that makes a claim about a certain race being the toughest, I almost always hear the 800 or 400.
I wish I had ran track in high school but I'm afraid I didn't have the kind of athletic ability that would have translated that well into good 800/1600 times. Probably would've been a 2:10-2:15 800 guy at best.

Yeah, like mattevans said, you'd probably be better served just concentrating on the 800. 2:18 isn't bad at all for a 9th grader. With the right training and work ethic you could have your time down in the 2:05 range by your senior year. Of course I'm not sure how good a 2:03-2:05 800 is in your state and classification. Here it will usually place you at least 6-8 at state. In a down year it can get you top 5, but then in a strong year you'd have to run a 2:03 or better to place. I live in Arkansas, and we aren't really known for producing great 800m guys, so times might be better where you live.

depends on a lot of things... some people grow a few inches after their freshman year while otehres are pretty much done growing. if you got some growing ahead of you.... i think a sub 2 minute could be a fair goal.
2:05 is what i ran at state that year and i was pretty uch last out of the whole field. and i grew up in alaska where the track season is rediculously short

Yeah, taller people with the longer legs and strides are built very well for the 800m. Of course I've seen some pretty shor t kids the last sevearl years run a 1:58-2:01 so it's not a necessity.
The time's and all that, that I was talking about isis for the 3rd biggest classification in Arkansas. There have been years whre a 2:05 would have put you close to the back of the pack. In the two bigger classifications you pretty much have to run a 2:01 or better to place. Texas is where it's at for a lot of great high school times. Most of our sub 2:00 800 runners in Arkansas will try and go to a meet every year in Texas to compete with their guys since there are always a lot running in the 1:55-1:58 range.
