I really hope there's a provision in the next CBA where homegrown and US internationals can be paid DP money without counting against the cap.
they basically do have that with Home Grown Player and Generation Adidas exceptions. You can also have up to 3 DPs now.

It's not the Home Grown slot he had in mind. The current home grown slot guarantees that the academy player won't count against the cap with his first contract but it's really not that significant as the player would be making near the minimum($40k or so) and the player is probably extremely raw. But after 3-4 years that homegrown slot doesn't count and the player will count against the cap.
I think what he's trying to say is if a team develops an established star they should be able to sign him to a "Homegrown DP" contract that won't count against the cap(or very little) instead of losing him to a European side. Would give an incentive for teams to develop their players more. Could have possibly saved some fringe USMNT players by staying the MLS in the past where they left for Europe as they were able to make more wages there while the MLS teams didn't have the cap for them.
BTW, anyone heard of Harrison Shipp? Rookie winger for the Fire. Everytime I watch him play he looks like a poor mans Arjen Robben.. Good dribbling ability, cuts in alot and is a very good scorer from distance. Might be a NT player soon if he keeps it up

Yep, that's exactly what I mean. That way teams would be able to hold on to guys rather than them having to go to Scandinavia or the English second division.
I've seen Shipp a few times. Really like his game - he's got great close control and vision but I worry about how his lack of athleticism will translate to the international level.
Houston Dynamo traded a player and a draft pick to TFC for the right to sign DaMarcus Beasley back to the US!
2 1/2 year deal as well.
Good move by the Houston Earthquakes.

Re: 2014 MLS Thread
I actually don't like the move from Houston's perspective. Don't think Beasley is a bad player but he's been kinda overrated lately from US fans. He's going to be 32 and the main aspect of his game is his pace. Houston is a team that needs offense and probably help in central defense and I Just don't see Beasley making that much of an impact.

Gotta disagree here man. I think Beasley will be very successful in MLS. I saw some of his games in Liga MX (he was almost exclusively a left winger) and he's a smart decision maker on the ball, crosses accurately, and makes timely runs into the box and finishes well. He also puts in a good shift defensively even in the midfield. I think he'd be wasted if he was only used as a left back but if he's played in his natural position with Davis as the playmaker, they'll be a formidable duo.

Galaxy drub the Sounders 3-0 at Century Link field. I believe they said 40,000 or so attended. Crazy.
8 points behind Seattle for the Shield now with 2 games in hand and 2 games left to play versus them. We coming for the Shield b itches.
-
Re: 2014 MLS Thread
Robbie Keane & Omar Gonzalez have withdrawn from the All-Star festivities.
Galaxy tops the Timbers 3-1, now has 33 points in 19 matches, Sounders are sitting at 38 points and 20 matches, while RSL has 36 points in 22 matches. Worst case scenario, Galaxy end in second, but taking the conference is possible with a match in hand & 2 games remaining.

The group stage is nothing.
The problem has always been the knock-out round. Remember when all MLS teams getting good results in the first leg and then getting swept the next week by all Liga MX teams?

Portland Timbers v. Seattle Sounders tomorrow on ESPN2
Portland (who I root for) has been pretty bad this year. :facepalm Seattle has pretty much owned Portland's soul for this entire season - hopefully Portland can rebound since it's at home for them. A win would really give more hope for Portland to potentially cling onto that 5th seed.

Re: 2014 MLS Thread
Most MLS teams just don't care about the CCL enough due to the way the league is set up and it becomes a nuisance for MLS teams instead. MLS teams don't have the depth to survive both the league play and CCL and with the long travel in midseason it becomes difficult..
I think Sporting KC has the best chance as they have the deepest team in the league and they've been rotating their players all season. Their guys will be relatively fresh in the competition while I think my team(NYRB) aren't gonna last as we have crap depth and Theirry Henry probably won't play in the group stages for the competition and if Henry doesn't play we don't have a chance..

Re: 2014 MLS Thread
NE Revolution won the Jermaine Jones sweepstake, beating out Chicago Fire.
I guess it's unfortunate for him but there was no market for him as teams were unwilling to offer him $5mil per season. Personally, I think he's not worth the money(not even half) and I would look elsewhere with my DP slot. He's going to be 33 soon and I see him having alot of injury problems and it normally takes a while for the European based DP's to adjust to the league so we can consider this season a wash for him. He's pretty much an "enforcer" and I feel like you can find quality enforcers in the MLS for non-DP contracts like Dax McCarty who I wouldn't trade for Jones even if they made the same salary.. Not like Jones is going to spike up attendance either.
So yeah IMO it's a panic buy. 5 million is insane for Jones and it's a result of a great WC. If he didn't play in the World Cup for example I don't think he'd get 2 million truthfully.

This DC v Chicago game is entertainment at its finest.
Fire lead 2-0, DC comes back to take it 3-2 and a screamer to tie up for the Fire. If Chicago doesn't get all 3 points, playoff hopes may die.
