http://www.sltrib.com/sports/4027157-155/utah-jazz-have-intriguing-draft-options
So Burks' surgery, however minor, served as a nice reminder that the Jazz need another shooting guard, or another small forward. Whichever it is doesn't especially matter. As long this player can add to the bench production, and shoot the ball. Those, essentially, are the two requirements.
Hopefully they already have their guy in Dante. If he can defend and hit a corner 3 I see him starting at the 2 possibly. Makes more sense than him starting over Mack at the 1 or even backing up Mack based on what we've seen. Ingles has looked like a rotation player at the end of his two seasons. Not sure why he can't do so early on. Johnson is a great defender/energy guy to have at the end of the bench too.
It isn't known whether Utah will use Thursday's NBA draft to select a wing, or whether the Jazz will wait until free agency.
maybe both or neither?
An intriguing dynamic with the group is the type of prospect the Jazz could potentially latch on to. In Murray, or Richardson, or Turkish guard Furkan Korkmaz, or Florida State's Malik Beasley, there is untapped potential. These are young prospects with plenty of room to grow. At the same time, they may not be ready to help instantly. And with the Jazz looking to lock in on a postseason run next year, that may not be the way they want to go.
So what is NBA ready to these guys? To me it would be stepping onto the court in game one next season and being able to play at a high level off the bench at least. That guy they will get after June. Hood, Exum and Lyles weren't NBA ready by that standard. By the end of the year they were. That's what I'd be expecting from whomever they get this year. D-league to start the year. We saw these guys occasionally under Jerry but Quin's system I believe is really difficult so I'm not sure we'll see it with him.
On the other hand, someone like Denzel Valentine from Michigan State is experienced. He's played four years of college basketball.
Hood had been in school for 4 years too.

http://www.sltrib.com/sports/4026471-155/kragthorpe-utah-jazz-should-trade-down
So what should the Jazz do? Trade down. Not up, down. If they traded a core player or two to reach any meaningful slot in the draft, that would only decelerate the rebuilding process, and who around here wants to live through any more non-playoff seasons? So if the Jazz go anywhere in this draft order, it has to be down or out.
Can't say I agree. I don't think they would necessarily have to give up any of their core to move up. It should be their last year drafting this high for quite a while so if they can move up and get someone they like without giving up the core I'd be all for it.
Any move the Jazz make this summer ultimately should be designed with the the immediate future in mind. The Jazz have to get older, not younger. If they can get a veteran player in a trade that involves the No. 12 pick, they should do it. If they can trade down or even out of the first round, simply forcing themselves to make other moves that add some skill and experience, they should do it.
I agree they need to get older but right now I see them getting one proven rotation guy. If they do that with their pick than they are pretty much done before free agency even starts and there should be more options there.
Baldwin is big enough and versatile enough to play both guard positions, and if he can take playing time away from Raul Neto, that's a good sign.
If Dante can take minutes from Neto or Mack that's good. Right now he isn't as good Johnson and Ingles.
If not, he'll lead the Salt Lake City Stars of the D-League.
Yes finally!
They need somebody like Richard Jefferson. The irony of that statement involves how Jefferson symbolized everything that was wrong about the Jazz's 2013-14 season, when they went 25-57 with Jefferson as a starting forward, cleverly positioned to make the Jazz look like they were sort of trying to win. Or maybe he was just keeping younger teammates off the floor, stunting their development.
:facepalm
They're not going to get anybody like that at No. 12, and they would have to sacrifice too much to move into a much higher draft position.
The one thing I read said there is a big drop off after 11 so even moving one spot could be big and that won't cost much.
It's true that they're too good to have the No. 12 pick make an impact this coming season,
Wrong. I can see someone helping them later on in the year. Just wouldn't expect it from the get go.
Outside of Trey Lyles, who stepped up and performed well as a rookie forward last season, and perhaps injury-plagued shooting guard Alec Burks, the rest of Utah's reserves often proved to be less than stellar during the 2015-16 NBA campaign.
Be nice if these guys even watched the games before they wrote stuff. Lyles was one of their worst players. He had his moments.
Their bench wasn't that bad. They weren't the ones on the court when they were losing games late. I could see most of them being back in fact.
Locke attributes Utah's late-game struggles in close contests to a lack of quality depth, which allowed games to remain tight when a better bench might've been capable of building on what the starters had, well, started and extending a lead rather than falling behind or treading water and merely keeping the game close.
Withey plays and there would gave been a lot less close games. Blame the coach not the bench.
"When you get into the analytics of lining up all the data, whenever we have our core guys on the floor together, we were fabulous," Locke said, speaking of Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors, Rudy Gobert, Rodney Hood and Lyles, with either Shelvin Mack or Raul Neto at point guard.
Forget what the analytics say about Withey. Make the coach look bad.
One NBA insider said the Jazz simply didn't have much NBA-caliber talent on their bench.
"Look around the league, and guys like Trey Burke and Raul Neto probably wouldn't play for anybody else but the 76ers," he said, speaking under the condition of anonymity.
I can see all their players in the league for other teams. Burke is the biggest question mark for me if he can't hit the 3 but as a 3rd pg he'd be pretty good to have around.
Neto is certainly an NBA back-up caliber guard at least. He can hit the 3 and play d and run the pick and roll. What else do you want? :confusedshrug:

ESPN's report said that the Celtics are pursuing Chicago's Jimmy Butler, Jabari Parker and Khris Middleton of Milwaukee and Hayward.
The Hayward rumor has perhaps been further fueled by the fact that the Jazz swingman played at Butler for Boston head coach Brad Stevens.
A conflicting report to ESPN's has emerged, via tweets from Brian Geltzeiler of hoopscritic.com.
Jody Genessy of the Deseret News refuted Geltzeiler's claim.

Re: 2016- Yet another long off-season
The Knight deal I'd probably do. I wouldn't expect much else from the Jazz this off-season with this move though.
Look for an upgrade with your bigs not that any of them will be as good as Withey. Someone that might not play every night but can play when called upon. Sign Favors to an extension if you can. Sign Gobert if he wants to take a cheaper deal now. Trade Mack, Burke, Withey and maybe Pleiss. Maybe re-sign Booker for a non rotation role. Might sign some fringe rotation guys and fringe NBA guys to make camp as competitive as possible. With Withey and Johnson on non guaranteed deals and the other end of the bench guys on cheap expiring deals there's no reason everyone shouldn't earn their spot this year.
The draft just got less interesting. Wonder what they'll do for an encore tomorrow?
He projects as Utah's starter next season, which moves Dante Exum to the bench, as he gets acclimated to playing again after recovering from a torn ACL.
Mack should have already moved Exum to the bench and Neto pushed him to another position possibly. I can see Hill starting at either guard spot or coming off the bench. All really comes down to Exum and where he's at. Hill is another big piece to the rotation regardless. Their oldest guy now but in his prime. Their best shooter. He defends. He handles. Championship experience. Great contract. Can they pay him, Gordon, Gobert and possibly Mack next year and leave money for those to follow though?
Trey Burke is on the trade block, Shevin Mack, whom the Jazz traded for in February, has a non-guaranteed contract until early July.
Got to think they pick up his option. It's too small not to and he was too good not to. They should be able to move him if they have to. If Dante isn't ready I'd roll with him.
Currently, the Jazz have five point guards on the roster, a situation that obviously needs to be alleviated.
Neto and Mack are the only ones I'd call pure pg's right now and they played together at times. Exum I can see at 3 positions. At least one will have to go maybe 2.
But with this acquisition, Exum gets the chance to be brought along more slowly, and without as much pressure.
It shouldn't change things reallyas far as that goes. Mack and Neto were both better than Exum was as a rookie and Johnson basically can fill the role of perimeter defender that Exum did.
The Jazz get better at the position, and they send a clear message to Hayward, who will be a free agent after next season, that they are attempting to improve in the short term.
