After the Gobert trade, a league source told The Tribune that more than a handful of teams called the Jazz to inquire about the availability of Mitchell — and the Jazz’s front office shut them all down. Those conversations, the Jazz felt, were league executives trying to pounce on a perceived opportunity to trade for Mitchell cheaply.

I find them interesting every year at least to start. Usually burn out on it by the end. This past season House and Juancho actually made the end a little more interesting too. This year is certainly interesting just to see what kind of lineup Mitchell ultimately sucks with
Not sure we will be worse this year. Getting 3 NBA players for 1. Maybe 4 if Kessler is any good. Huge upgrades in perimeter defense with Vanderbilt and Beverley and another proven scorer in Beasley. Sign or trade for another center who will be able to replace 90% of Rudy's production (Hassan and Dok did last year when forced to play) and we are set.
Gobert was never an offensive threat, and seemingly didn’t improve that side of his game throughout his tenure in Utah, but his presence on the defensive end can’t be denied, as he went on to win three Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2018, 2019 and 2021. The defensive minded center’s in today’s game are becoming fewer and fewer by the year, as most are opting to improve their offensive game and focus solely on stretching the floor, but as an old-school big man, Gobert managed to impact the game on that end of the floor like few players have in a long, long time.

https://thejnotes.com/2022/07/11/utah-jazz-5-best-summer-league-players-history/
2014 was his second summer stint, and the first one in 2013 was forgettable. No one watching knew the talent that he would eventually become, because in five games he only put up five points and six boards. He did, however, average 2.4 blocks that year.
a mere months before he turned the teams fortunes around!
Aside from total points, Hood was a much better all-around player. He could shoot, pass, and rebound better, and his defense was comparable, if not better. Hood is fifth in Utah summer scoring and fourth in minutes. He never erupted for over thirty, but he was a consistent 15ppg guy who knew how to find the open man. Despite averaging one less point than Burks, he comes in ahead simply because of his well-rounded game. Looking at his Summer League play, it’s a wonder he didn’t become a do-all starter in the league for more than two seasons.
Hood was a better rebounder and passer than Burks? It's a wonder that Hood can't even make it as a 6th man because he can't stay on the floor.
Lyles is second all-time in summer scoring for Utah, fourth in rebounds, and third in minutes. In two summer seasons, he averaged 17 points, but in his games in 2016 he went off, scoring 13, 26, 22, 28, then 30. He was always a double-double threat, and he could step outside to knock down the shot from deep.
I thought he was awful that year. Jazz made a big mistake putting the ball in his hands. He suddenly thought he was his hero Kobe and was never the same after that
You knew this was coming, right? I mean, he’s arguably the best Jazz player since the 1990s, so of course, he balled out in the Summer League. Donovan Mitchell is first in points, minutes, and steals so that alone is enough to rank number one on pretty much any list.
he's not better than Rudy, Hayward, Millsap, Deron, AK, Boozer...top 7 maybe?
At the end of the day, Mitchell is a franchise player with multiple All-Star appearances and is one of the best scorers in the game. Ball, on the other hand, never really got much better after his rookie year, so I guess Utah fans got the last laugh.
https://saltcityhoops.com/the-mitchell-question-is-central-to-utahs-post-gobert-path/
In the 43 seasons the Jazz have belonged to Utah, just three of the franchise’s players have achieved all-league status at least four separate times: Karl Malone (14), John Stockton (11) and a certain Frenchman who’s suddenly figuring out how to forward mail to Minneapolis.
but it's time to build around someone that has 0!!! :coleman:
In other words, being competitive without Rudy Gobert on the roster is going to be a challenge. According to various stats that attempt to apportion credit for a team’s record (EPM, RPM, RAPTOR, Win Shares, LEBRON, etc.), the Jazz have gotten a bonus of somewhere between 10 and 17 wins just by having the Stifle Tower on their roster. Over the past five seasons combined, only three players have impacted winning more than Gobert as measured by luck-adjusted Regularized Adjusted Plus-Minus: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry and Nikola Jokic, who have six MVPs between them.
overpaid at less than full super max!!! :lol
Indeed, plugged-in folks tell me that the Jazz are not done roster-building yet. They’re just also not in a massive hurry.
obviously
That’s why I’ll stop short of guaranteeing that Mitchell doesn’t change addresses this summer; stuff changes constantly. As high as the bar ultimately was for the Jazz to move Gobert, I’d guess the threshold is similar or even higher for a Mitchell deal. There’s growing evidence to suggest that teams offering a bunch of decent-ish stuff for Mitchell just aren’t even in the ballpark, at least for now. That could change in a hurry… or not.
they'll ask for more than he's worth and probably get it because of the hype and the fact that there are a lot of stupid front offices
If it does change, the Jazz could suddenly find themselves in the middle of an honest-to-goodness rebuild. Many fans have noticed that it seems like a good year to dip into the lottery, with eight or nine potential stars atop the 2023 draft. But again, that doesn’t appear to be the way franchise brass are talking at the moment.
I think that is exactly where they're aiming with 3 picks already
If we take Zanik’s “primary players” designation to mean they want at least a borderline star to pair with Mitchell, the potential target list starts to get more finite. And where that circle overlaps on the Venn diagram with “bigger players” and “realistically gettable,” there are some obvious names to start with — though to be clear, these are purely this writer’s speculation. John Collins is still sitting there despite the whole world knowing of Atlanta’s desire to move on. Is he enough of a star at this point to fit the label? How much would the Jazz have to give up to get Turner on an expiring deal? Is Harrison Barnes more available than he was at the trade deadline? Is Toronto intent on keeping its glut of wings? Or is someone else available that we don’t know about? If that tier of player is unrealistic, there are non-star difference-makers who could help make Utah bigger and younger, if they’re available: P.J. Washington, Larry Nance, Jakob Poeltl, Kenrich Williams.
Their borderline star is Bojan. Bojan and Mitchell don't win. Don't think any of those guys and Mitchell do but I like the thought of Collins
Mitchell’s regular season stats plateaued last year, and then he had what could be accurately described as his worst postseason as a pro, especially struggling with defense, outside shooting, and some aspects of playmaking. But overall, he’s a player who’s still climbing. A new ecosystem could provide the backdrop for another mini-leap, and honestly Mitchell crossing that last tier into All-NBA waters is probably the only way of staying truly relevant in the short term. That’s a lot to ask of the young man, essentially saying he has to be an MVP candidates or the Jazz will backtrack — but that’s about the shape of it.
was awful after the break. This is what everyone should be talking about!

https://thejnotes.com/2022/07/11/3-power-forwards-the-utah-jazz-could-target-in-a-trade/
This is the most unlikely trade on the list, as although the draft picks would help Philly acquire a star alongside their two big names, they are likely just looking to make that happen in one trade, but if Utah can get the 76ers talking, they should certainly be trying to target pairing Tobias Harris with Donovan Mitchell going forward.
Mitchell/Harris on max deals? Harris might make more? Can't see them winning many games
The Knicks may not look to part with Randle for scraps, but if the Jazz are happy to offload some first round picks and a talented name or two like Malik Beasley, Leandro Bolmaro or other young players acquired in the trade, there’s a possibility that the Knicks take that deal and look to use all those picks to acquire a star. His fit alongside Mitchell, Bogdanovic and Mike Conley isn’t the worst, and if he can get back to form away from the spotlight in Utah, the Jazz may be on the precipice of taking the next step forward.
he's a little more intriguing because he did carry the Knicks a couple years ago. Last year would make me pause though!
Collins has been rumoured to be available for a while now, and if the Jazz can find the right deal, along with Mitchell, Bogdanovic and the talented bench that Utah possess, this could be a team that has potential to do some damage when it matters most in the next few seasons.

The Celtics are not expected to have interest in dealing for Mitchell per league sources given the high price tag and their recent offseason moves. However, a number of Eastern Conference rivals are expected to make plays for Mitchell. Let’s take a closer look at some of the possibilities in play on that front and what they could mean for the Celtics.

The Celtics ideal scenario would be a lesser East squad such as the Knicks to put themselves in play for the high scoring guard, keeping Miami from firmly re-establishing themselves as a top contender in the East with another star acquisition. Other wildcard candidates out West would need to be considered as well (Dallas?) but a lot of teams around the league have already used assets on big names this summer in separate deals (Atlanta, Minnesota, etc.)

Re: 2022 off season Post Gobert. A new era begins
I agree with this and think Snyder actually did this pretty well. I think the bigger problem was the FO's decisions kept UTA from having young players who had the potential to become valuable NBA players. Great development can only do so much if a person lacks a fundamental ability to play at an NBA-level. And there are definitely teams and coaches who are better at development (MIA and SAS probably top the list), but not being the best doesn't mean Snyder was bad.
Don't agree. They've had guys that could have helped. Many of them are still around so other teams obviosuly think they have some value. They beat Denver in the bubble if COTM plays Brantley, Tucker or Oni for just 5 minutes on Murray instead of Clarkson/Mitchell
think jazz gambled too much with high picks they had. exum obviously the best example as he had never played against real competition. everyone creamed their pants with how successful he had been in what were basically youth leagues.. i always thought of that pick as limited reward and very high risk.
trey burke was always going to be an undersized nba guard who liked to shoot first. kanter i have mixed feelings about, because he actually developed a genuine nba offensive game, albeit one suited to 20 years earlier. trey lyles was a bench player for kentucky. even the big man from last year was and oddball pick. with gobert on your roster why in hell would you choose him with a first round pick? we got favors on a trade, and i just never felt like we used him correctly.
they didn't work out Exum or Burke. I think Kanter actually could have fit better with Rudy because he showed 3 point ability early on. They could have had him playing the perimeter. D would have been an issue of course but Favors spotting up for 3 was a bad idea. Liked Lyles before they let him think he was Kobe. Kind of the same shit that happened with Hood. You take a big with your first because they had young guys developing at every other position. Center was the obvious pick. Rookies aren't going to play. You pick them so that this year you have Udoka, Nickel and Butler fighting for a cheap rotaion spot on a team that will be tanking by the end of the season
Grayson Allen is actually a solid rotation piece as much as people don’t like him. He’s not like an all star or anything, but he’s what you would hope for in a mid to late first round pick
but he had to go or he would have been playing 35 minutes a night
Yeah this isn't really fair to the Jazz or accurate. You can always look back and see who was drafted in all the picks after, but the draft is impossible to get right. Burks, Kanter, Hood, Allen have all started a lot of games in the NBA with the Jazz and/or after they left. Kanter being the 3rd pick makes it a little tougher, but look at the rest of that years top 10, there were a ton of busts worse than Kanter.
None are really starters though. Burks maybe?
I agree with you . I only wanted a new coach.
new coach and 6th man!
We just needed a different coach to hold DM accountable for defense and an improved wing
not all they needed but it was needed!
I still am a believer that the failings were on the offensive side, The Jazz would go into an offensive funk game after game, teams would have 17-2 or worse runs on the Jazz often. Then they would panic and start chucking up 3's. The team sucked last year and probably the year before at working together to win as a team.
in this playoff it was. Maybe Dallas was that good at D? Jazz D was good enough to win the series as it was when Houston beat them because of poor offense
Everyone keeps saying to bring in a star to pair with DM, being realistic who can they get?
What team wants to trade a young star player? (one without baggage)
Really would like to hear some trade suggestions that would be a good fit for DM and the Jazz.
exactly! Mitchell is on a max deal and he won't be an all-star without Gobert.
OG Anunoby
Ingram
Caris Levert
Tobias Harris
TJ Warren
Mikal Bridges
Josh Richardson
Collins
Miles Bridges
Rui Hachimura
We should try to get one of the above using Conley and players/FRPs we acquired from MIN
We should keep Clarkson and Bogie
We need to get taller
shit show
No wonder Ainge is in for a total rebuild, there's not much that can be done to get the Jazz better.
Too much is needed to get the Jazz going in the right direction and it's going to be a longer thing than getting a new "Batman" for Mitchell.
that's what I see. I think Mitchell may get a chance to start the year with vets but by the trade deadline the fire sale will be over hopefully. Mitchell can be part of it or not. I think if someone like the Knicks is stupid enough to give Ainge what he wants he'll be gone regardless
Jazz need four or five young athletic stars and it's going to take some time, enjoy the build!
4 or 5? is that sll they need?
Even if they win 0 games they still only have a 14% chance to get the #1 pick. But I guess the draft is supposed to be pretty loaded next year. Guarantee though at least one player in the top 5 will be a bust. Rebuilding is hard.
supposed to be deep. Get as many picks as you can in both rounds it sounds like
If we got such great assets in the Rudy Gobert trade, why shouldn't we be able to find a second star? Maybe we could trade for Kevin Durant--or at least Kyrie Irving. Both players are available.
the problem is you have 1 guy on a max deal that I'm not convinced is an all-star without someone carrying him
I think the best asset the Jazz got in the Rudy Gobert Trade was Jarred Vanderbilt. I just wish that Danny Ainge would have held out for Jaden McDaniels, as well.
if he ends up the best asset the Wolves butt raped Ainge
I know Barrett is really young and looks like a great prospect but I'm not convinced he's a future all-NBA player. I could be completely wrong, but this is why I'm not excited about trade packages from NYK.
can he be or is he better than Mitchell? I know he's cheaper! Just be glad Mitchell didn't get all NBA and have a super max deal!

Re: 2022 off season Post Gobert. A new era begins
Just imagine Burks, Favors, Kanter, Gobert, Hayward, Exum and some combination of Giannis and Booker or both most on rookie contracts. That is what I am hoping is in Jazz future.
I'd hope for a lot more than that. Exum certainly is something I hope they never have again!
I don't really agree that the reason the young players didn't develop under Corbin was because they didn't get playing time. I've talked about this elsewhere, but I'm not convinced that giving playing time to players means they'll develop, and often when young players can't get on the court it's generally because they don't have the ability to be useful NBA players, or they aren't being developed off the court. Corbin was definitely a terrible coach but I think most development occurs outside of games; or at least the initial stages of development take place off court and at some point players do need to play but probably not until they've demonstrated some degree of competence. Just as an extreme example, no amount of minutes played could make me a useful NBA player because I'm not good enough to actually benefit from the playing time.
Yep. Lots of ways to develop. Sloan played Hayward as a rookie. Sloan didn't play just any rookie like COTM with Duke players. Corbin made the playoffs with an inefficient black hole!
As for Q, the examples I would point to were Exum and Burks. DL kept re-signing them even though they were getting DNPCD.
To me that's the difference between a great front office and one not so great. They know when to cut their losses. Everyone makes bad moves. It was obvious pretty early on that Exum wasn't an NBAer and the Wizard kept doubling down hoping the guy he picked over Smart and Randle would someday turn good! Then they end up with Clarkson on top of it and I'm still living that nightmare!
Hood was getting a lot of playing time (2nd most on team) didn't play defense well and his FG efficient was bad, yet always started and always played. DL traded Hood. The point I am making is the guys that got playing time got playing time just because. Burks had a rebound rate only behind Rudy and had better FG% than Hood, and averaged like the most FT attempts per minute on the team for backcourt players. On paper, Burks was way better than Hood, but Burks got DNPCD and Hood started and got 32 minutes per game. No rational basketball fan would say Burks was not good enough to get 1 minute of playing time game after game. So, then the story was "maybe Burks has a bad attitude" which was disproved when he was traded.
I wouldn't say Burks was way better. He is now. Burks had a lot of injuries as did Hood. Neither was a starter. That was the problem with Hood. They made him think he was better than he was when he was really just a 6th man like Burks. Take Hood over Clarkson too!
The point is that from Corbin to Q, playing time is not based on if you are better or worse than another player. Therefore, not playing does not mean players are not able to play. When Hood got hurt, Burks and DM were an awesome backcourt and the Jazz were blowing out teams. I would still argue that players develop by playing, just look at Rudy. Rudy was raw but the more time he got the more he developed. I'll agree it is not just playing time in a vacuum, but playing with other players as well.
He got better playing in the Gleague where he should have been all that year. People complained he should have been playing. He wasn't ready for the NBA physically and probably not confidence wise either. You can hurt a guy by playing him when he's not ready. Lose their confidence etc
millsap was only 27 his last year on jazz, and had improved every year in a jazz uniform. actually think he was one to keep. why would you have traded him at 25? he was exactly the type of player jazz should have been looking for
It wasn't so much that they let Millsap go it was that he left for 16 million for two years while Demarre got 2 or 4 million a year for 2. You keep those type of guys at that price. They never did realize what they had in Paul. He was better than Boozer. He was better than Al. He was better than Favors and Kanter. He was better than Hayward! He's the best player Rudy should have been playing with for years by far.
Regarding Burks, I think his lack of playing time had more to do with injuries and the emergence of Hayward and Hood than anything else.
injuries played a part but it was obvious he wasn't a COTM guy. They tried to force a guy that was so good at getting to the hole and the line in to a spot up 3 point shooter. Even when he played the way COTM wanted he still didn't like him.
Exum and Burke are even good examples that simply giving someone playing time is not a sufficient condition for someone to develop. Both were given minutes and neither ever really improved (Exum and injuries, but still).
Burke has improved after degressing with the Jazz
Gobert, DM, O'Neale, Ingles, Clarkson all flourished under Snyder. Obviously some players didn't, but many of those were out of the league shortly after leaving UTA or weren't that much better for other teams.
Pretty sure guys like Gobert are going to flourish anywhere. COTM starting O'Neale at the 4 and giving Ingles too big of a role were problems. Clarkson flourished!
Mitchell should grab a huge treasure trove of assets. Remember, he has three years left on his deal and is just now entering his prime.
actually appeared to leave his prime after the all-star break. What was that all about?
Things are about to get nuts in Utah, and over the next few weeks, and it’s looking like it might officially be tanking season for the Jazz. Here’s to a season, or two, of #tanknote!
a season or two is being optimistic. If not for Rudy they still might be tanking from 2014
I'm still bitter about Burks. He is still producing, and the guys Q played with a clear double standard created a culture where players are not held accountable. A lot of us pointed it out years ago, and it eventually caught up to Q. Maybe if Q was as strict with everyone like he was with Burks, the Jazz would have had a more hard nose culture.
yep. Take Burks over Clarkson any day!
And the Conley deal turned out to be a clunker and the downfall of the franchise, as many worried it might be at the time it was made.
Hardly. Had their best team since Stockton and Malone. Fell short because of COTY, Clarkson, Mitchell...
All that to be a good #2 player, both were/are fringe all-stars.
Glad the Jazz can get assets to build with.
Gobert has been one of the best players in game for years based on many metrics. You are right about Mitchell
on a positive note folks , the new FO is no longer chasing old vets that are past their prime
Beverley
I get why a complete rebuild is intriguing and exciting. There's just a lot of hope and you don't have any expectations in the immediate future of winning so there's no stress watching games. But the Jazz have been very lucky for the past 40 years to not have any lengthy rebuild. It's fine for a couple years, but when you go into complete rebuild mode there's a real chance that you could be there for a long time.
someone gets it. You need stars. They are hard to come by. Jazz have only had two better than Gobert. Good luck replacing him!
A full rebuild will probably be 5-8+ years before UTA is a good playoff team.
Utah wins the trade! :lol
I think the prior FO did well young players, but Corbin did not do anything with developing (even playing) young players and heavily relying on vetzz. Milsap and Al should have been traded when Jazz trade DWill. And they both got big contracts the year after they walked from the Jazz, so Jazz could have traded them 2 years before with even more value.
Should have built around Millsap once Deron was traded. Al never made any sense. Could have had Millsap and Gobert which would have been better than Hayward or Mitchell. You keep those guys. You build around them
Should have been more picks, and then Trey Burke (at #9) was what seemed like a save pick, but dude had already hit his ceiling. CJ McCollum went 10 and Giannis 14.
CJ was my guy. Imagine Rudy, Millsap, Hayward and McCollum
The Utah Jazz traded Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves. It still doesn't feel real, and it's gotten me feeling like slapping a cup off the scorer's table, but it is true. Gobert likely won't wear a Utah Jazz uniform again.
I could see him coming back on his next deal after Danny has built a team. Come back and anchor the 2nd unit
Despite starting his sophomore season as the third big man in the pecking order, Gobert worked his way into the starting lineup. His defensive dominance was shining, and it became clear that he needed to be this team's anchor. Gobert became a fan favorite, earning nicknames like 'The Stifle Tower,' 'Gobzilla,' and 'The French Rejection.' After his biggest highlight plays, he'd salute the crowd.
I think he might have been 4th big to start the year? I did think he'd earned it. He had came a long ways that off season. More than anyone could have imagined! Never did salute again
Gobert was making his mark on the Utah Jazz history books. He climbed up the statistical leaderboards, cementing himself as an all-time great for this franchise.

his assault on the NBA record books more impressive
In international play, Gobert became the face of the French national team and led them to their third-ever Olympic medal, the first in 20 years. He also won two FIBA Word Cup bronze medals and one Eurobasket bronze medal.
might back up Embiid now!
All those awards and the trade package mean nothing, because he didn't DO anything. He actually played worse in the playoffs. His team--of which he is supposedly the best player--lost in the first round. Two years ago to a team without their best player, and last year to a team that was missing their best player for three games.
I know there are players that were great but didn't win a ring, like Barkley, or Nash, or Stockton and Malone, for instance, but they had great performances IN the playoffs. They did their part. But Gobet gets worse in the playoffs. There are no great performances. Maybe we'll see some with the Wolves but I don't see how he can be a ledgend for the Jazz. If I was writing the headline I'd say, despite all the accolades and statistical achievements, Gobert was, at best, a no show when it mattered most.
It means everything. He's carried a franchise for over 7 years. Only 1 team wins it all. Doesn't mean everything else means nothing. He's on his best team now by far. Let's see how he does in the playoffs with a better team and coach. Karl sucked in the playoffs when it meant the most. Gobert can't guard 5 players at once or score without the ball. These are true
We traded a future 1st ballot HOFer in his prime with four years left on his contract. . . for draft picks.
We blew it.
time will tell. Chances are they don't get anyone better than him though
dantley maybe most talented jazz scorer ever
rickey green (aka fastest of them all)
stockton for his toughness (he likely would have crusted malone and eaton at same time wrasslin)
bailey just all around good guy, who mite be a prototype big now
hornacek the guy who almost made jerry sloan respect 3 pt shot
millsap the drive to make a very modest skillset work and strive to get better each year
no maybe on Dantley. He taught Karl a lot too. I like Thurl a lot less now that he's an announcer!
honorable mention to ron boone~~another good guy
and an awful commentator
If we had Gobert during Stockon and Malone instead of Ostertag, what would have happened? This is before the game changed to centers shooting 3s.
Would have rather had him than Eaton. They might have won it all in '88
interesting thought. many of stocktons passes were really quick and throw very hard. i remember getting irritated with eaton and tag for fumbling away so many. not sure gobert has better hands.
Stockton didn't throw lobs is where I wonder how things would have evolved
I'd put Rudy in my top 4 favorite Jazz players to watch. I'm really going to miss him. I really hope Minny wins it all (if the Jazz don't soon, which we most likely won't).
would be great. Comes down to ANT's development and how much longer Gobert can play at an elite level
If the Wolves make one NBA finals [the Wolves have never been] I won't care if we go 15 years without a playoff appearance! You can have all those picks. One finals run and we won the trade! I don't even need a title. I just want to soak up a finals run!!
They win if the Jazz don't end up with someone better than Gobert. Chances of that have to be incredibly low
Lowry was there and I know they had a few other longer-term players (Lowry actually played 6 years before joining TOR), but they still only won because of Kawhi (and all of GSW getting injured).
Kawai was the difference sure but they had a very good team around him
you are right, and that was actually the last time kawhi was reasonably healthy for any length of time. special player but injury bug has him. makes me sad because i think there was a 3-4 yrs span where, when healthy, kawhi was best 2 way player in league.
he was when last healthy. Giannis may have passed him. We'll see
Nice recap Calvin. Thinking he might get the longest, loudest ovation of an ex Jazzman on his first game back? I don't remember Karl's.
If they had a clue they'd unveil his statue or at least which side of the arena they will place it
pretty sure there was no animosity when he left and maybe even lhm's blessing
pretty much the same here as Rudy is now on a lot better team except he didn't want to go
I remember after one of the games, Kobe said, "We should be able to play with these guys. . . "
you could have if you'd passed the ball to your best player
Since Stockton retired anyway, most didn't blame Karl for leaving. It's similar to how Mitchell feels right now. What's the point without Gobert?
to prove the hype
The fact that Sloan dragged a team led by a 22-year old AK47 to a winning record (42-40) is remarkable. That should have been Sloan's 5th COTY award. Harpring was the 2nd best player, and he only played 31 games that season.
his best coaching job. Should have been fired after his first 1st to 3rd in the division with two of the greats

Re: 2022 off season Post Gobert. A new era begins
https://thejnotes.com/2022/07/13/redoing-2010s-drafts-utah-jazz/
As we enter the mid-2020s, we can now look back on the 2010s as a decade and confidently say where the Utah Jazz went wrong and where they went right. Since 2010, the Utah Jazz have made some really good and really bad draft choices, so with hindsight being 20/20 it only makes sense to rewind a bit and consider what the franchise could and should have done with their draft picks.
since the 70's
This was a horrible draft for the Jazz. With the third overall pick, they selected Enes Freedom, who never panned out as an elite NBA center. Tristan Thompson and Jonas Valančiūnas went four and five, and while neither of them are amazing, they both would have been better bigs than Freedom, which was quite a reach.
Val was definitely the guy here and everyone knew it. O'Conner didn't want him because they would have had to wait a year to get him. :facepalm
At 12, the Jazz took Alec Burks. Burks had some solid seasons and lit it up before he played a real NBA game, but with Tobias Harris, Nikola Vecevic, and Kawhi Leonard all going soon after Burks, any one of them would have been a better selection. Two early picks, and two big whiffs for Utah. Imagine a lineup with Kawhi and Valančiūnas. How many banners would they win after getting Donovan Mitchell?
maybe no banners. Kawai is great but you need other guys playing both ends
With their second-round pick, the Jazz took Erick Green. Green did what you would expect from a mid-second-round guy, and that’s not saying much. At least he never played for Utah, as the Jazz traded him and cash the Denver for Rudy Gobert, which ended up being an excellent move.
I liked his brief stint with the Jazz. He certainly had potential. He was drafted for Denver though. Denver drafted for Utah
With the first-round picks, Utah took Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgei Dieng, both of whom are decent role-players. Neither one of them ever played for the Jazz, because Utah traded them to the Timberwolves for Trey Burke, the University of Michigan standout.
Minny drafted for Jazz as did Denver. Gobert and Burke were the Jazz picks not guys that were drafted for another team
Instead of Exum, Utah could have taken Marcus Smart, Julius Randle, or Zach LaVine. All of those would have been great picks. At 23, instead of Hood, they could have gotten Clint Capela. Funnily enough, the worst pick may have been Jarnell Stokes. In the second round, it becomes a crapshoot to see who ends up being productive players, but Spencer Dinwiddie, Jerami Grant, Nikola Jokic, Dwight Powell, and Jordan Clarkson were all picked after Stokes. I can’t blame Utah for missing, but they could have lucked into at least one great player in this draft class, right?
don't think anyone was talking about LaVine that high. Randle and Smart were though. Exum fell and the Jazz pounced unfortubately
Oliver Hanlan and Dani Diez never played an NBA game, but being picked 42 and 54 with not much talent left in the class means the Jazz did all they could. It’s not like the second round in 2015 was a failure, there just was not much talent there.
Hanlan looked good in the one summer league game before they traded him
With four draft picks, one has to hit, right? Well, kind of. The Jazz took Tauren Prince at 12, and Caris LeVert, Pascal Siakam, and Dejounte Murray were all selected much later in the round. Prince never actually played a game for the Jazz, as he was traded to the Hawks in a multi-team deal that landed George Hill. Hill only played 49 games in Utah but he put up 16 points, so the return wasn’t that bad.
probably could have gotten Prince instead of Beverley which to me makes more sense. Jazz drafted those guys for the Hawks. Jazz were all in to keep Hayward finally! :facepalm
Hill was arguably their most valuable player the first month of that season before he hurt his toe. He should have been brought back or at least replaced by someone that fit like Beverley!
In the second round, Utah took Isaiah Whitehead, Joel Bolomboy, and Tyrone Wallace. Only Bolomboy played for Utah at all, and I highly doubt anyone remembers him, so this second round went as expected.
liked Bolomboy. Wallace was a cheaper Exum who actually improved his body and finish after the Jazz just let him go for no good reason
Tyler Lydon was picked 24th and immediately traded to Denver. Josh Hart went 30th and Thomas Bryant went 42, but they were traded to the Lakers for Tony Bradley, who was not that good. Their 55th pick, Nigel Williams-Goss, played one forgettable season, which tends to be how 55th picks go. I would have loved to have kept Hard and Bryant instead of getting Tony Bradley, but this is the draft that brought Donovan Mitchell to town via Denver, so it all worked out in the end for the Jazz.
Bradley actually was good. Still in league. The Jazz just like to blame guys playing the smallest roles instead of coaches or hyped up stars. Goss was good. Maybe not athletic enough for the league. They drafted Hart and Bryant for the Lakers!
I do not like Grayson Allen, but he was a steal at 21. No one immediately behind him has been as good as he has been, and Devnotae Graham and Gary Trent Jr both went in the early second round, so I can’t reasonably see the Jazz passing on Allen to get either of them. This was a good pick, given who was still there.
biggest problem for Allen was he went to Duke. Graham is Donovan's bud
The Jazz used the 23rd overall pick to select Darius Bazley, who was then traded to Memphis with other assets for Mike Conley. Utah could have taken Nassir Little, Keldon Johnson, or Jordan Poole, but that late in the first round it was probably better to play it safe.
They could only take Bazely because that is who OKC wanted!
With the 53rd pick, Utah took Justin Wright-Foreman, who has only played one season in the NBA, and it was nothing special. Fortunately, no one noteworthy was selected after him.
but he was actually better than Hughes who the drafted to replace him and all gleaguer Brantley! :facepalm

I guess the Knicks can trade them 10 firsts including several next draft or some shit somehow and they have the history to do something so stupid. Come on Dolan don't fail us now! Ideally I'd want Mitchell Robinson in the deal. He just signed(or maybe just agreed to a deal and they can still do a sign and trade somehow) so it's not in the trade tracker and it might have to wait until December 15th or whatever to make the deal? Gay doesn't work in this deal but maybe if Robinson is included he or another of their vets can be in it? Barrett and Reddish are up for extensions now so you'd have to weigh that. Keels not yet 19! McBride 21. Toppin and Robinson the oldest at 24. Add them to Kessler, Bolambo, Butler, Nickel and Udoka, all under 24, and the tank is official. Nice mix of prospects and proven young vets. Ainge will be having fun again! Trade the other vets for picks/assets/young guys
pg Quickley/Butler/Forrest/McBride(Stars)
sg Barrett/Grimes/Keels(two way)(Stars)
sf Reddish/Walker-Alexander/Bolambo(Stars)/Juang(2 way)(Stars)
pf Vanderbilt/Toppin/Paschall
c Robinson/Udoka/Kessler(Stars)
The Stars should be good again too!
While it is true that the Jazz have had little playoff success in Mithcell’s five seasons it Utah, it is absolutely asinine to suggest he can’t be the best player on a championship team. With the right pieces around him, Mitchell could absolutely lead a team to the NBA Finals.
hard to imagine that scenario. Had the best defensive player in the world covering for him and we saw the result. Who covers for him?
Recent history suggests that I’m right. Mitchell, Devin Booker, and Jayson Tatum all play similar positions, and both of them have gone all the way to the Finals in the very recent past. Yes, Mitchell is slightly less efficient of a scorer and plays worse defense, but he is the best volume scorer out of those three and is arguably the best playmaker and all-around offensive weapon. If Mitchell were surrounded by an ideal lineup of a pass-first point guard, a true three-and-d player, a rim-running power forward, and a pick-and-roll dominant center, then the Jazz could be in excellent shape.
those guys are bigger and better. He's not in their class
How might this lineup come together? They could trade for John Collins, an athletic, defensive-minded forward, and they could also make a move for Myles Turner, who is not quite on the same level as Rudy Gobert but poses a much better threat offensively. Conley or Patrick Beverly could be that guy, and Bojan Bogdanovic is still an elite shooter.
lottery. Might as well get young guys and picks
LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Luka Doncic, and Nikola Jokic all need help, in the form of solid rosters around them. They are all undisputedly the best players on their team, but no one man can get a team a banner, so why is it expected that Mitchell has to be the guy? He can be the best player on a championship team for sure, but the roster needs to be complete and filled out, the same as it would be for any other superstar.
probably won't have a better roster than he did two years ago again. Knicks won't Jazz won't
Wojnarowski suggests that the asking price is steep, perhaps too high, but the Jazz are no longer just hanging up the phone. Does this mean the end for the current Jazz roster? Or is this just more off-season smoke and mirrors? Utah definitely cannot compete with the current roster minus Mitchell, so the return on him would have to be future based, with unprotected picks, and a lot of them. Is there any team willing to mortgage their future? Mitchell is a top-20 player and is only 25. Dejounte Murray is not quite the player Mitchell is, and he’s the same age. The Spurs got four picks for Murray, so Utah should ask for more than that.
Murray is the better player. If someone offers more you have to pounce?
This is the most obvious deal on the market. Mitchell has been connected to the Heat for a long time and they have been the team that has been reportedly looking to make a deal for him for a while.
Knicks deal the best
A core of Mitchell, Bam Adebayo, Jimmy Butler, and Kyle Lowry would be one of the most talented in the league, and after being the one-seed this past season, it would likely only improve their chances.
You think Butler will let Mitchell slide on D?

Sounds like it will probably happen. I'd say trade deadline though
