Re: David Stern to step down as commissioner Feb 1st, 2014
Imagine if we had Presidents for 30 year terms. Think of all of the ****ed up shit you could slander them for. I feel the same way about Stern. Overall, he was good for the NBA. He even is reviving it after MJ which is amazing.
Of course, that's not all his doing, but it should be credited to him if you want to discredit him for the NBA being fixed.
Lastly, not a fan of his replacement. I wish they could have had someone different, but I don't know who else they could have chosen.

How many faces can this guy have? He mentioned today that the league is in terrific condition, yet they've been losing money hand over fist for the past 6 years or so. A CEO of a real company that is bleeding money would never say such things.

Speaking of this does anyone know of any possible candidates for the position other than Silver? One of them will be the new Deputy most likely. I wanna know who the next Deputy will be!!!!
Re: David Stern to step down as commissioner Feb 1st, 2014
Best commish in all of the major sports by far. Hopefully whoever replaces him can pick up where he left off and not make things crap. People complain about Stern as if the new guy will make things the way YOU want them to be. Jokes on you. So dont put away your tissue you use to dry your tears. Keep out the notebooks of whines you throw at Stern. You'll be using them again.
The NBA Finals use to be shown on TV late at night on tape delay.
Just look at the league now.
That stopped in 1982. Before Stern. Bird and Magic saved the NBA and Jordan took it where it had never been popularity wise. It was underway before stern got there. He no doubt made decisions that helped....when to start/end the season to keep CBS happy for one.
But the 80s players and modern advances saved the league.
Re: David Stern to step down as commissioner Feb 1st, 2014
Maybe he is quitting because Kobe will not be around thereafter to make headlines for him anymore. Kobe is also pending to retire in 2014. NBA will probably be so boring post-Kobe era.
That stopped in 1982. Before Stern.
Stern became Executive Vice President of the league in 1980, one of his first responsibilities was to get the NBA better TV. Stern renegotiated the current CBS contract before the 81-82 season. Key in the deal was the NBA started it's season 3 weeks later but CBS would guarantee to show all games live. The Finals eneded up running in June and missing the important May sweeps week but it also meant the NBA wouldn't be trying to compete with the World Series which was very popular then. iT was also the most lucrative contract for the NBA I think it was around 90 million.

As I said...the time the season started was a CBS issue and had to be worked out. But the finals were live long before Stern was anywhere to be seen. They had live primetime finals games in the 60s on ABC. Even the christmas day game being live nationally started in the 60s.
The NBA had a down time in general and Bird and Magic came along. The finals didnt do epic ratings in the mid 80s because of David Stern. It did numbers for the same reason the 79 title game is the highest rated college basketball game ever. Larry Bird....Magic Johnson.
Stern came along at the right time to be credited for Michael, Magic, and Bird. If it were something Stern had control over the finals ratings wouldnt have taken such a huge dip without Jordan in 94 and 95 and then in the early 2000s. He didnt just..stop marketing players. Whatever his magic is it couldnt get people to watch Spurs/Cavs.
The finals have not reached the ratings they had in 1977 since Jordan left(and its not like cable was invented in 2000). And they wont unless its Heat/Lakers this year.
The players drive it. The big names drive it. Great series drive it. Stern is doing the same thing when the Spurs/nets gets a 6 as when the Lakers/Pistons get a 12. When the Bulls/jazz gets 76 million viewers its not Stern making it happen any more than when someone gets 4 million.
26 million people watched Bird/Magic play in college. It is 30 years later...still...the most watched college basketball game ever. CBS would not need he leagues vice president to tell them the rematch is a major event.
Right place at the right time to get the credit for the players who got people talking. He played his role. But the "The NBA was on tape delay" before stern thing is just bothersome.
The NBA was(briefly) on tape delay because of several issues...biggest of which....not having people bigger than the game to make non basketball fans take notice.
Bird, Magic, and Jordan gradually became those guys. And if Stern were the reason he wouldnt have only made 3 of them and wouldnt have allowed the declines seen without them.
If he could just market and contract his way into Duncan having the mass appeal of Jordan or Magic he would have done it a long time ago.
Sterns rise came with the biggest stars in the sports history and the media age coming in.
He deserves a nod. Michael, Magic and Bird deserve more than that.

It would be hilarious if Silver ends up doing a horrible job and everyone all of sudden gets on Sterns nuts saying how great he was during his tenure. But from what I hear they're basically the same like how people say about Obama and Romney. :confusedshrug:
