shortly before the meeting with Ariza they received word that Artest was willing to sign for the midlevel. they offered that to Ariza and when he balked...

i don't think you can blame them. the lakers had needed toughness for some time and Artest had played them well the year before in the playoffs. to get him for the midlevel? hard to pass up.
