Ennio Morricone's "The Ecstasy of Gold" deserves some consideration.
He's composed many that are transcendentally brilliant. Leone's films have scores that really transport the listener.
Prince's "Purple Rain" also comes to mind.

First song that came to my mind was Springsteen - Thunder Road. It is pretty insane to image a single song being regarded as the greatest ever tho. There are definitely genre or era defining songs but music is way to diverse for there to be anything close to a consensus.
Stairway to Heaven isn't even my favorite Zepplin song. I still don't know what this means
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Also did someone just say they listened to Highway to Heaven?

This is Highway to Hell
Never heard Stairway to Heaven or Bohemian Rhapsody.
Pathetic.
Just like Ace, I've never heard Highway to Heaven nor Bohemian Rhapsody or watever (Although if I go to youtube and listen to them (which I will after this post) I'd prob recongnize it from a movie or commercial).
Anyway, It seems like this thread is "whites only" type music, so I'll exit to da left.:lol
IMO, the greatest song ever is Michael Jackson's "Thriller" with "Billie Jean" a close 2nd. Goat gonna Goat.
I'm a huge music buff so I will answer this in terms of what I've seen from the many many lists and discussions I've had over the years. If I were to stick to English language songs from the 20th century and I had to pick one I'd say it would have to be Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone. When referring to greatness it's usually how impactful that song was to society and other music at the time. I remember not liking it the first time I heard it when I was really young. Eventually it became one of my all time favorites as well.
Money Trees - Kendrick
Gorgeous - Kanye
Break From Toronto - PARTYNEXTDOOR
Gimme Shelter
There are a few in each genre that can be considered. It has to be a song that ANYONE can enjoy no matter their taste. Something that is so good you can't help but appreciate the beauty. Some of my unconventional candidates would be...

Sounds of Silence!!! Simon came to Central Park and sang that about ten years ago. Powerful soft song much like the lyrics suggest.
In the vein of the songs mentioned on the first page. Caught my ear from the Bronx Tale. One of the very first videos ever.
