Supply and demand. Nike keeps the demand up with their advertising campaigns, and they artificially keep supply low with "limited releases". There's no reason they can't make fifty million pairs of Kobe Zoom Air Durant Max IV's, but then people wouldn't be lining up outside Footlocker just for a chance to buy a pair.
