Skipping out on the Olympics, albeit a tough decision because of personal reasons and national pride, will prevent Exum from being overextended too quickly this summer due to national team duties. I can see him starting at the 2 more than the one but first he has to show he's an NBA player.
The good news is that during the 2015-16 season, the Utah Jazz's overall defensive efficiency improved from 12th to seventh best in the NBA from the year before.
They were 1st after the Kanter trade so this year's in consistency was disappointing. They ended strong again at least.

not sure they are really though are they?? They've been strong on the offensive glass for a while now though.

http://www.sltrib.com/sports/4027157-155/utah-jazz-have-intriguing-draft-options
So Burks' surgery, however minor, served as a nice reminder that the Jazz need another shooting guard, or another small forward. Whichever it is doesn't especially matter. As long this player can add to the bench production, and shoot the ball. Those, essentially, are the two requirements.
Hopefully they already have their guy in Dante. If he can defend and hit a corner 3 I see him starting at the 2 possibly. Makes more sense than him starting over Mack at the 1 or even backing up Mack based on what we've seen. Ingles has looked like a rotation player at the end of his two seasons. Not sure why he can't do so early on. Johnson is a great defender/energy guy to have at the end of the bench too.
It isn't known whether Utah will use Thursday's NBA draft to select a wing, or whether the Jazz will wait until free agency.
maybe both or neither?
An intriguing dynamic with the group is the type of prospect the Jazz could potentially latch on to. In Murray, or Richardson, or Turkish guard Furkan Korkmaz, or Florida State's Malik Beasley, there is untapped potential. These are young prospects with plenty of room to grow. At the same time, they may not be ready to help instantly. And with the Jazz looking to lock in on a postseason run next year, that may not be the way they want to go.
So what is NBA ready to these guys? To me it would be stepping onto the court in game one next season and being able to play at a high level off the bench at least. That guy they will get after June. Hood, Exum and Lyles weren't NBA ready by that standard. By the end of the year they were. That's what I'd be expecting from whomever they get this year. D-league to start the year. We saw these guys occasionally under Jerry but Quin's system I believe is really difficult so I'm not sure we'll see it with him.
On the other hand, someone like Denzel Valentine from Michigan State is experienced. He's played four years of college basketball.
Hood had been in school for 4 years too.

http://www.sltrib.com/sports/4026471-155/kragthorpe-utah-jazz-should-trade-down
So what should the Jazz do? Trade down. Not up, down. If they traded a core player or two to reach any meaningful slot in the draft, that would only decelerate the rebuilding process, and who around here wants to live through any more non-playoff seasons? So if the Jazz go anywhere in this draft order, it has to be down or out.
Can't say I agree. I don't think they would necessarily have to give up any of their core to move up. It should be their last year drafting this high for quite a while so if they can move up and get someone they like without giving up the core I'd be all for it.
Any move the Jazz make this summer ultimately should be designed with the the immediate future in mind. The Jazz have to get older, not younger. If they can get a veteran player in a trade that involves the No. 12 pick, they should do it. If they can trade down or even out of the first round, simply forcing themselves to make other moves that add some skill and experience, they should do it.
I agree they need to get older but right now I see them getting one proven rotation guy. If they do that with their pick than they are pretty much done before free agency even starts and there should be more options there.
Baldwin is big enough and versatile enough to play both guard positions, and if he can take playing time away from Raul Neto, that's a good sign.
If Dante can take minutes from Neto or Mack that's good. Right now he isn't as good Johnson and Ingles.
If not, he'll lead the Salt Lake City Stars of the D-League.
Yes finally!
They need somebody like Richard Jefferson. The irony of that statement involves how Jefferson symbolized everything that was wrong about the Jazz's 2013-14 season, when they went 25-57 with Jefferson as a starting forward, cleverly positioned to make the Jazz look like they were sort of trying to win. Or maybe he was just keeping younger teammates off the floor, stunting their development.
:facepalm
They're not going to get anybody like that at No. 12, and they would have to sacrifice too much to move into a much higher draft position.
The one thing I read said there is a big drop off after 11 so even moving one spot could be big and that won't cost much.
It's true that they're too good to have the No. 12 pick make an impact this coming season,
Wrong. I can see someone helping them later on in the year. Just wouldn't expect it from the get go.
Do expect: someone who is an immediate upgrade over some of our rotation guys from last year's injury plagued season.
I would expect one of the worst guys on the roster at the start. It's where I'd put Exum until he shows otherwise too.
