Re: 2019 off-season- Bring back the same group for more of the same?
The Grizzlies are intensifying talks to potentially move franchise cornerstone Mike Conley Jr., league sources told The Athletic. Memphis has been in conversations with the Jazz and Utah is a frontrunner to acquire Conley should the Grizzlies trade the point guard during draft week, league sources said.

Re: 2019 off-season- Bring back the same group for more of the same?
https://www.ksl.com/article/46575990/a-quick-look-at-the-mike-conley-to-the-jazz-trade-rumors
Big picture: The Jazz are heading into free agency looking for a lead guard. Point guard Ricky Rubio’s contract is up and he's said the Jazz have told him he’s not their top priority. It's unlikely a starting point guard-caliber player will be available with the Jazz's No. 23 pick in Thursday's NBA Draft. So, the Jazz have two options: find one in free agency or get one via trade.
Mitchell, Neto, Exum, Ingles. Could we stop expecting any draft pick to contribute right away?
Conley’s contract situation: Conley would represent an upgrade for the Jazz at point guard. He averaged 21.1 points and 6.1 assists last year while shooting 43.8% from the field and 36.4% from the 3-point line. But he’s also got a pretty hefty contract.
But is less than the 3 guys they could have and should have traded away for him. They might be NBA champs right now :rant
Conley has two years left on a deal that will pay him $32,511,623 next season and $34,502,130 in 2020-21. He’d be the highest-paid Jazz player.
and might end up being their most important
How would this deal get done? In a nutshell, the Jazz would need to send enough salary back to match Conley’s hefty contract or waive enough salary to absorb Conley’s deal into cap space.
which is doable. Hard to believe the Jazz have more assets to offer in return though
Matching salaries trade: Tony Jones from The Athletic reported the Jazz are reluctant to include Derrick Favors in the deal. Without Favors, things get tricky.
God forbid they trade a guy that needs to go :wtf:
If the Jazz guarantee Favors' $16.9 million salary and use it in the deal, thoses numbers are easy to get to. If not, the Jazz would likely have to look at the likes of Jae Crowder, Joe Ingles or Dante Exum — and likely two of the three — to make the deal work.
They don't want Exum I'm sure. Would be Bradley, Allen, Goss, picks and cap space I would think. Maybe some filler. Again hard to believe no one wants to give more.
Cap space trade: The Jazz could waive Favors’ $16.9 million salary, along with some of the other nonguaranteed contracts — Korver, Raul Neto, Georges Niang and Royce O’Neale — to help open up enough cap space to take on Conley’s deal without sending as many players back. Something like Favors' waived salary plus trading Exum (or Crowder) and other minimum salaries could work.
They aren't cutting O'Neale. Hopefully they don't have to give him up in the deal. Neto, Niang and Korver could be in the deal.
Another thing to consider: If the Jazz stay above the cap following the trade (meaning they don't use cap space to take on Conley's contract), they will retain the full $9,246,000 mid-level exception. If the Jazz are under the cap, they will only get a $4,760,000 exception.
Use the 9 million to get a decent starting modern 4 maybe? Ideally still have Crowder or Niang to back him up. Udoh/vet and/or Bradley to back-up Rudy, O'Neale to back-up Ingles/Mitchell, Exum to back-up the 1,2,3. Use the other exception for another solid vet. Vet minimums and young guys to fill out the roster. They become the favorites. Hard to imagine though
Guest commentary: Utah Jazz's search for modern-day power forward continues
It does? Everyone seems to think Favors is just fine and they need help everywhere else. :facepalm
The Jazz might be the last team that hasn't fully embraced small ball. They start two bigs, with Derrick Favors playing alongside Rudy Gobert for the past four seasons. When Favors entered the league eight years ago he was the classic NBA power forward, but the league is changing fast and now his best position is as a center. The Jazz play about three-fourths of their time with a spread floor using Jae Crowder and Thabo Sefolosha at power forward. The Jazz
With both the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets facing issues this summer, now is the time for the Utah Jazz to aim to strike.
As I've been saying you have to strike when the iron is hot. GS has been vulnerable the past two seasons. Jazz might be champs right now if they'd made the Conley deal. Might never have a better opportunity :rant
Even so, the current opportunity is too great of one for Utah to pass on. And they must also do all in their power to try to become the next giant to rise in the place of the former ones. Adding Conley could be a great move in the right direction, and it would likely be Utah
