they handled it very formally. And they followed the unwritten rules. They are both among the teams best player so it’s acceptable for them to fight. It’s considered uncouth for a scrub to challenge a star. In NBA terms is like if Pat Beverley wants to fight Steph Curry. That’s a stupid trade. If they both get hurt or put out the Warriors lose that transaction even if Curry wins the fight. so unofficially, you have a goon on the squad who kind of takes the stars place as his champion in the trial by combat.

but both these guys are stars. If they want to fight they can fight. And as I understand it, the guy who went to get permission isn’t generally a fighter and it shows as he did in fact get his ass beat. But I think he gains respect, even taking that beating because he didn’t get somebody to handle it for him.

Of course, in the NBA, there would be other issues like a lack of padding, making it more likely you get hurt and we all have to admit there’s a demographics issue which would play into the perception.

Having thought for a minute, I don’t think Jokic could realistically have a fight. Embiid is the only Center of similar status to satisfy the unwritten rule and I don’t think he would risk it. Well, I guess Anthony Davis as well? Both are fragile. I can’t imagine either one of them wanting to have a fair fight with Jokic on national TV. I also think if the coach for either gave the OK they would be fired.

Luka and Tatum Could have a fair fight, even though Luka is obviously more valuable to his team if it were like a series. Lebron and Giannis. I wouldn’t see it happening though.

I would say the guy asking the coach was just being procedural, he knew the coach wasn’t going to say no.

I think one of the things about fighting in Hockey, it lets them get it out of their system. If there was two guys with super bad blood for whatever reason and they don’t let them fight…it’s just going to bleed through the rest of the game and turn it into cheap shot city where people are actually gonna get hurt.

Hockey fights are usually 1v1 where they agree to square up. And there basically encased in a glass bowl so it can't spill over into the fans. Where as basketball fights are wild uncontrollable brawls.

Yes Basketball fights turn into brawls and back in the day the fans would be involved way too often. But the messiness of it is largely because it isn’t organized. Hockey fights aren’t officially sanctioned, but there’s an understanding. We have a problem. Someone finally decides it has to be addressed. Everyone stands back and lets you do it. The refs jump in when you have blown off steam or someone is down.

In basketball, it’s chaos. And half the chaos is people running in trying to break it up. Some of the most famous and infamous incidents involved people who were initially in there to separate the two. They started slowly changing the rules in the 80s and the only people who could go toward to fight were people acting as peacemakers. That’s how they worded it. You could run in if you were grabbing somebody to get him out of the fight.

I’m sure all of you remember seeing when Dr. J gave Bird the three piece while Barkley was apparently choking him. You let Barkley tell it he was trying to restrain bird. Stern Called him in the office and he said he was trying to act as a peacemaker, but the footage makes it looks like he was holding him up for Doc.

That and a couple other incidents like when Greg Anthony ran in off the bench and got stomped out by Kevin Johnson and the suns Forced the change to you can’t leave the bench area at all. Which is why the suns got suspended during the Nash and Horry playoff incident.

If two people go at it and everyone else just backs up and let them settle it there would be far less brawls.

I think when Willis Reed fought and injured like five Lakers one of the people who got a broken jaw, was only running to try to stop it.

Hockey? They just stand back and let it go. The two people might be more risk, but everyone else is probably safer.

Another situation was Rudy Tomjanovich. Kermit Washington almost killed him thinking he was running in to fight and Rudy was supposedly gonna try to stop it. The chaos is as much born of people getting involved unnecessarily as the two people fighting. Didnt Rudy say he was trying to break up the fight when Draymond put him in the million dollar dream?

Teams don’t run goons anymore, just like the nba’s gone away from Mahorns and Oakley’s. In the modern game everyone has to be able to skate and handle the puck to some degree.

The first time someone broke a knuckle it would be over. Also you can never make the loss of player completely fair, Like the example you brought up in a Mavs/Celtics series. Let's say Tatum is crazy/conniving and intentionally gives Doncic an injury in Game 7. The ref tosses him out for it but it's now Irving vs. the Celtics in Boston, Dallas would be screwed. And id the Celtics then had Jrue Holiday beat up Irving? After the fights were over the game wouldn't be watchable. Dallas would have to launch 2 or 3 more fights to have a chance.

When it costs ~700-1500 to gear out your kid, hockey players are going to be from more well-off families. Generally speaking of course.

That fight was probably more about the previous game when Boston's captain (a giant POS in his own right) possible got hit from a rabbit punch that wasn't called or reviewed by the league. Captain missed game 4 due to possible concussion.
