I didn't know what to put, I was gonna put artist, but Russ Simmons isn't an artist ...
Public Enemy has to squeeze in there somewhere. KRS is a candidate too.

This is not a ten greatest rappers list, but the most important people in hip-hop. Although I should put Public Enemy here.

Red means NO, blue agree.
Here's a better list:
Kool Herc
Russell Simmons
Ice T
Uncle Luke
Rick Rubin
Rakim
Curtis Blow
Beastie Boys
Sugarhill Gang
RZA
Kool Herc is credit as the inventor of hip hop, without him we aint having this discussion.
Russell made it a legit business.
Ice T original gangster rapper and movie star. And he put the West on the map, paving the way for NWA.
Uncle Luke is more important to music in general than just hip hop. He fought for freedom of speech and censorship. As well as being one of the godfathers of Southern hiphop.
Rick Rubin was the first super producer/a&r extraordinaire. But even more important than the hits he made, is he is even more responsible for Def Jam Records than Russell. They remain good friends.
Rakim revolutionized hip hop by taking it to the next level.... he was a huge seismic impact segueing hip hop into the next generation.
Curtis Blow was the first hip hop superstar (this is debatable)
Hip hop's main audience is 'white' people. Beastie Boy's impact is extremely and grossly underrated, as they introduced it to the world. Without them, hip hop doesn't reach the masses, and their record "Paul's Boutique" is the epicenter (like Rakim was to rapping) for production. Completely revolutionizing the way people sample records forever. Instead of just the usual 'loop' it becomes more scientific and technical.
Sugarhill Gang, they put hip hop on the map by having the first legit hit and taking it out of the clubs.
RZA changed the way contracts are made, completely changing not just hip hop but the entire music industry.
Some are debatable, but others shouldn't be.
I thought with your unconditional love of Gilbert Arenas you'd tried to sneak him in here somewhere...
Rakim, Tupac Shakur, Chuck D, Russell Simmons, Kool Herc, Afrikaa Bambatta, Kool G. Rap, Roxanne Shante, Beastie Boys and Puff Daddy.
This of course is my opinion.
MC Search
Nas >>>
Oh yeah, and some other people...
BUMP
IS this a good starting point? Any additions or subtractions?
I don't know, but why did you put Master P up there?
He changed hip hop.
First rapper to own his masters.
An independent artist selling so many records from the ridiculous deal he signed with Priority in 1995. Also he was the first rapper to release straight to movies.
The first rapper worth over 100 Million.
The first rapper to really go outside of hip-hop with him being a sports agent and so forth.
Everyone is doin it now, but P started the trend.

So, would you say he was the start of the decline of hip hop?
How was Nas not mentioned?
Arguably the GOAT and one of, if not THE most influential/greatest rap albums of all-time in Illmatic.
LOL @ listing Master P and others before Nas.
DJ Kool Herc
Beastie Boys
RUN-DMC
2pac
NAS
Biggie
the roots
NWA
RAKIM
Eminem
..there's too many to list
This is a big fail for me since you dont have two most influential MCs ever, Rakim and KRS One.
There's really too many to name. So many people were influential in their own way. It really depends on what defines "important."
Is it more important to have been one of the first rappers, paving the way for everyone else?
Or is it more important to have come along later, and re-defined what hip-hop was?
Given the first criteria, your list will include 10 guys no one has heard of, and that would probably sound whack based on todays expectations.
But given the second comparison, guys like Tupac, Eminem, and Jay-z become much more prominent.
So, would you say he was the start of the decline of hip hop?
To discredit Master P and the No Limit camp as nothing in the game of rap is haterish and backpackerish all day. No one argues Master P was superbly talented or an emcee, etc steez, but to ignore his impact and how he came into the industry and 'wrecked shit' (for lack of a better term/description) is just being a dumbass, which isn't surprising coming from you.
When you try and add your $0.02 in these rap debates, it almost always comes off like some redneck who occasionally had their white trash ear open to hear a little rebel rap music here and there; which commonly highly praises the Wu Tang clan and outside of that, doesn't really know anything of the subject and would be much better off just not engaging in discussions.
Your type is so sickening. Just please, please keep your opinions out of these discussions. Pathetic.
most important people in hiphop history....
um... black people? lol

What the...i don't even...
Yo, no Eminem love? dude sorta changed the whole hip-hop and rap game... cuz he proved you didnt have to be black to rap and all those shit.. I dont know if Vanilla Ice became famous before Eminem did.. but to me, Eminem proved everything you could ever possibly prove. Homie shut everyone up....
And I can see that lil wayne influenced Posterize to put a tattoo on his face... how dumb can you be? No hate, but thats just dumb..
He lost me when he clicked on the thread....
Yeah, I lost you guys b/c you're simply not on my level in these debates/discussions.
you can really divide this question into two questions.
you can have importance in the formative years, and importance in the established hip-hop genre.
obviously the guys who were responsible for creating hip-hop are more important than the people who came afterwards in a historical sense. because without them, the succeeding generations would never have even become hip-hop artists.
however the succeeding artists have been more instrumental in popularizing hip-hop.

You're not making any sense... but from what I gathered from that, you said LOJ's opinion is top tier without question, etc. then all good. That is right, and should be.
ISH isn't my entire life... believe you me, life is well and far beyond these ISH hallways... but when I'm at a PC be it work or at home, then yes, ISH is my haven and I willl use it as my playground if I feel the need to do so.
You don't like that, then go away.
To discredit Master P and the No Limit camp as nothing in the game of rap is haterish and backpackerish all day.
I asked why Master P is up there and the reasons he listed were all basically $. My hate? I actually like some of his songs, you silly wackjob. My problem is that he was quantity-over-quality. Where did I say his camp was nothing? Oh, I guess you have to completely make shit up. Mother****er trying to be a White Knight for Master P... Really? Master P? That's who you want to launch a crusade for? You gonna make me say Uhh!? You got the hook up? Should I holla if I hear you?
No one argues Master P was superbly talented or an emcee, etc steez, but to ignore his impact and how he came into the industry and 'wrecked shit' (for lack of a better term/description) is just being a dumbass, which isn't surprising coming from you.
O rly? His impact on how to make money puts him in the top 10 for being the most important? I don't give a shit if he made crappy direct-to-video movies, how he became a crappy sports agent, or how he made a boatload of money off of boatload of crappy songs. I want someone who contributed quality and whose influence is felt in a much deeper way and not someone who showed how you can make money off of mediocrity.

You know what? You're like Starface in this regard. You try to apply these ignorant labels and make all these wild assumptions that are waaaay off the mark. And, you know, it's cute little kids like you like to play dress up and act like you're the leading authority on a subject and that nobody else has the knowledge they have, so they just best not even post on the subject because they just ain't on the level. Get over yourself and grow up. Nobody appointed a delusional, self-righteous, ignorant buffoon like you to decide who can and can't post about hip hop. It's funny that you feel your opinion is so important and valued to make such comments.
Your type is so sickening. Just please, please keep your opinions out of these discussions. Pathetic.
You ignorantly ramble pretending like you know anything about me, but it's my type that is so sickening? I barely even said anything in these 2 threads and you're doing nothing but making up all these assumptions based upon a couple sentences. LOL at wackass clowns like you thinking it's cool to tell others not to post in precious threads like this one. "Don't post in such a sacred thread like this questioning Supreme Hip Hop Legend Master P!" **** you and the whore you rode in on.
This is a big fail for me since you dont have two most influential MCs ever, Rakim and KRS One.
Who's your top ten?
You can't have Tupac without having Biggie mentioned
Who's your top ten?
I'm not going to post my top ten, but most influential are Faggs like Eminem,Gay Z, Lil Wayne, Soulja.... etc they have destroyed good hip hop and thats the most influential thing as there can be.
Soldier boy. He managed to make every tom, dick and harry think they can rap. :oldlol: You can't put tupac in the list and not add BIG. The east/west coast battles changed hip hop forever.
