Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
I don't think there are any point guards who are Gary Payton type defenders who will shut their man down. For the most part point guards just take turn raping each other, but some of them have a good defensive impact.
1.) Chris Paul--gets on-ball steals but can also play the passing lanes, plays good help D, vocal leader on that end of the court, pesky and provides a lot of ball pressure, I think he has a solid case for being the best defensive point guard
2.) Jason Kidd--not much of a point guard defender, but is a big, strong point guard who is fundamentally sound and has quick hands so can legitimately guards 2s and 3s. He made Kevin Durant's and Dwyane Wade's lives miserable during fourth quarters.
3.) Rajon Rondo--I always though his D was a bit overrated. He gets steals by playing the passing lanes, although his freakish wingspan allows him to do it without gambling as much as others. He definitely commits on that end and makes life a bit more difficult for the opposing guard.

Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
John Wall will be on that list in a couple of seasons...So much potencial in him defensivly.

I think Jrue Holiday is pretty good.

Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
Rondo. Kinda had a down year defensively from what I saw tho.

John Wall/Brandon Jennings for the next 3 years
-
Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
Chris Paul, people who think he does nothing but gamble and play the passing lanes know nothing about the guy and have never watched the guy played.
Rondo is more like that than CP3.

Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
LOL @ the people being mentioned in this thread.
The best defender is Kirk Hinrich.

funny how DWill consistently has among the worst on/off defensive numbers, D-rating, or any other objective measure of PG defense and CP the best.
But he is bigger

Well defense can't be measured by stats so Dwill>>

Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
CP3 actually is a pretty good defender. He gets a lot of his steals on man defense, not just playing the passing lanes.

it's kind of true though. Steals and blocks don't tell you everything, otherwise we could say Amare and Javale McGee are good defenders. The other statistics can be circumstantial--who's he playing with at the time, who's the other team playing with at the time, are two players being asked to defend the same type of players?--stuff like that. Also some players don't really "bring it" on defense every night, but that doesn't mean they're who you want defending you during the playoffs. The eye test is best for determining who's a good defender.

Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
Norris cole will be in this conversation very soon. he's a very good on ball defender. I can't wait for miami vs boston/bulls/sixers next season for people to see what a good defender he is. But for now, CP3/hinrich/rondo/rose/ are good.

Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
I don't get why Derrick Rose gets called a good defender. I don't really see much out of him. He's not Steve Nash bad, but I don't know why he's considered any better than average. He has good individual defenders on his team and good defensive schemes from the coach.

Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
the back up pg for the bulls was the most impressive defensively in the playoffs. chalmers couldnt even bring the ball up the court against him at sow points.

Lots of defensive point guards can do that against Chalmers. I bet Avery Bradley can do that easily.

Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
id take rondo over paul, mostly because paul can occasionally get exposed by bigger point guards down low, like andre miller and billups

Show me all the games where Chris Paul's defense has been exposed, thanks.

when he plays against bigger point guards like miller, d-will, and billups, the opposing team will call for post ups on him. if hes the best defensive point guard in the league, the opposing teams wouldnt be calling plays to isolate him down low.

Ok, and how successful are they posting him up and scoring on him? Show me some evidence instead of spewing a bunch of b.s., thanks. Who cares if they call a bunch of isolations down in the low-post if they are unsuccessful at it? Id take that anytime.

do they even play defense in the NBA today.

While I agree with Rondo #1, that "post up" scenario happens 100x more on message boards than in real games against CP. CP isn't weak and his low center of gravity, quickness, and the fact they never call a foul on him aren't that inviting for post-up PG's, and even against Deron and Billups at their best it doesn't happen more than twice a game. In fact I've probably seen Kobe or Lebron post up on him more than either of those guys and they don't match up nearly as much so it's not exactly a go-to move for PG's.
His weakness against big guards is when they face up and have a good long range J, which is something Rondo is long enough to prevent.

but my point is, that if cp3 is the best defensive point guard he shouldnt be targeted at all. id rather have rondo who is more versatile and has no holes defensively as opposed to cp3 who isnt a great low post defender.
-
Re: Best Defensive Point Guard in the NBA?
Jason Kidd easy. He handcuffed Lebron and does a great job on bigger guards.
He can't guard the quick point guards anymore w/o getting embaressed remember the No Dallas series CP3 torched him.
Point guard on point guard Rondo.

Chris Paul
Jrue Holiday
Russy/Rondo
Kirk Hinrich, although he is the most versatile one of them.
