I have a kidney donor!
As many of you know, I have been on the Oregon kidney transplant list for about 2 years. Today I got the phone call saying they have a live donor for me. To my shock, it was none of the people who called on my behalf, just some random stranger that wanted to help somebody out. I'm scheduled to have surgery on July 23rd, so my move to Cali will be somewhat delayed.

Well, I have already been on peritoneal dialysis for about a month. Being on dialysis for an extended amount of time is not really good for you. There is an increased risk of infections, weight gain and related health issues would be expected, easy to get hernias, and ultimately dialysis is not as effective as kidneys so your health just gets worse and worse (somebody who lives on dialysis full term has their life expectancy cut in about half). I've also had several painful but benign side effects of the dialysis, including a nerve issue at my diaphragm that made it feel like I dislocated my right shoulder. The alternative to no dialysis or transplant is complete kidney shut down which would kill me.
Additionally, the timing of this was important for my education. I'm starting an internship mid-July (more like beginning of September now) to complete my doctorate in psychology, but if my surgery overlapped even more with my internship, it could greatly effect the hours necessary for licensure. My doctors and I were just recently entertaining the idea of putting a transplant on hold for a year so I could finish my school while I just stayed on dialysis for a year.
Thanks for all the positive comments.

I want to find out the birthday of the donor. Then on that day, I will have about a 2 minute birthday celebration for the kidney with a cupcake or something, since that is about the ratio of me that will be having a birthday on that day. :D
..... oh, and I'd be very thankful as well. I can't offer him much, but I'd love to take him and his family out for dinner.

I had actually just started playing basketball again this past week since my dialysis surgery. I'll have to put that back on hold so I don't mess up something before the surgery. The interesting part of playing basketball while on peritoneal dialysis is that I surprise the heck out of people because I don't look like I can ball at all (not that I'm great, but I'm a better defender than I am a scorer). I'm carrying about 2 liters of extra dialysis liquid in my peritoneal cavity at any given moment, so I have an artificially stretched out belly and then I have a foam pad that is about 1.5 inches thick over my belly, so I look like I can't move. However, I still have strong legs from my sprinting days. My endurance is currently very poor, so I usually guard the slower guys, but when there is a switch on a screen, I see the guards' eyes light up thinking they have a major mismatch but it is never the easy drive to the hoop that they think it will be.

If she is on dialysis, she should definitely be on a transplant list IMO. I was on a list way before I started my dialysis.
